SS/SD leveling

Can someone help me out with a SS/SD build that's:

1. Not an AE PL'd build.
2. Not ninja run as main travel power build.
3. Not factoring in IO sets for slotting and powers right off the bat.

I have been searching like a mad man and everything I find is IO'd out and using ninja run. I have found a ton of information that has helped so far. The main issue at the moment is putting that information into play. Maybe I can search some more, but I am starting to get a bit frustrated.

Having just returned to the game on a new account I don't have a ton of cash. So I have to plan my build for SO enhancements. The goal is to use this brute as a foot hold character to work my way up to farming so I can support my future projects.

Thank you in advance

p.s. feel free to message me about this post

Honestly SS/SD isn't terrific at farming until you pour a ton of money in. I would recommend an SS/Fire or SS/WP Brute instead as they function well with minimal cost and can be used to make you money. Or you could head over to the Market forum and learn to make money.

Sorry I didn't directly answer your request.

I will jump in the boat and say I agree with the above poster. SS/SD is just not strong until you pour tons of cash in. I have one, and he is great, but it was one of my most costly brutes to date to invest into. The build will be tight. I still don't have a travel power. Luckily, dropping a run speed IO into a sprint type power and the run power from fitness will get the job done.

There are lots of problems that won't get solved with SS/SD until you are heavy with IOs. Not just common IOs, either. Expensive ones.

Lack of recharge is problematic for Active defense and rage. Rage crashes can create issues with a defense based secondary. The build is extremely thirsty with little means of recovering endurance. And all of that on top of the fact that softcapping Shield defense in itself is tricky and extremely costly. Some people would contend the build can still be effective without hitting the cap, but I would have to disagree.

My fire/fire was my workhorse until I was able to get enough cash to make a ss/sd effective. I suggest you look into ss/fire or ss/wp for other options.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

Thank you guys for the help. I am going to put my SS/SD on the back burner for now. While I was waiting on a reply to this post I was messing round with a claws/elc. I think I am in love

Anyway the plan now is to just use my Fire/Dark Corr for farming.

(anyway no further replies are needed as I wont be leveling this build toon)

Once again thanks you.

I don't have a SS/SD, but I have an electric/SD which cost about 600 Mil and 400 merits to make with lvl 40-50 sets. However, when I was leveling, it's performed decently with lv 20-35 crafted IOs (common or sets). At level 30ish, I frankenslotted and spent about 50k per slot with cheap recipes and common IOs. For reference, a lvl 30 damage IO is 30k for the recipe, 41k to craft and about 1k for salvage. I suggest you consider using crafted IOs instead of SOs. SOs need to be replaced and cost goes up per level.

The_Laughing_Man posted estimates on the cost of SOs. Here's a summary of his post:
Level 27: 45 Slots @ 36,000 Inf = 1,620,000 to fully slot out.
At level 32, you can buy level 35 Single Origin Enhancements. You will need 53 of them to fully slot your character. 53 Slots @ 42,000 Inf = 2,226,000
At level 37, you can buy level 40 Single Origin Enhancements. You will need 66 of them to fully slot your character.
66 Slots @ 48,000 Inf = 3,168,000
At level 42, you can buy level 45 Single Origin Enhancements. You will need 77 of them to fully slot your character.
77 Slots @ 54,000 Inf = 4,158,000
At level 47, you can buy level 50 Single Origin Enhancements. You will need 88 of them to fully slot your character.
88 Slots @ 60,000 Inf = 5,280,000

Total: 16,452,000

Assuming you buy SOs from the trainer, in the long run, SOs cost more due to the replacement cost. If you use crafted IOs, you don't need to worry about replacing them.

For travel, a cheap way without using up a power slot is to buy a jetpack. On villain side, you can buy it in Grandville near Recluse's statue for 10k. As long as you can get to Grandville, you can buy it even at lvl 1.

I also suggest making a corr with kinetics. As soon as you get speed boost, set your comment to: <your primary>/kin. This will cause farmers to send you tells asking you to kin for them. If it's an AE farm, a fast an easy way to make money is to exchange your tickets for rare salvage like Military Cybernetic or Conspiracy. Sell these for 2 mil each. The slow and patient way is to exchange your tickets for bronze recipes. Craft the recipe and sell them between 200k - 2 mil each. Note that 1 recipe costs about 70 tix while rare salvage costs 540 tix. 540 tix gets you about 7 recipes. If all 7 recipes are crafted and sold for 2 mil, your 540 tix made you a profit of 14 mil minus crafting and market fees. Or, like the previous poster said, check the guides on how to make money on the market.

Hope this helps!

Alignment merits also make slotting so much easier now that every non-purple recipe is available for only 1-2 a-merits.
That means it will take you only 2-4 days for each recipe if you only have one character running tips and morality missions. If you have more characters the speed increases dramatically.

2 characters = 2 recipes in 2-4 days
3 characters = 3 recipes in 2-4 days
etc....

You can also use a-merits for salvage for those recipes since you'll likely need to buy that, but I prefer usign the reward merits I no longer spend on random rolls or all the AE tickets for the necessary rare/expensive salvage.

It has become a lot easier to build using the most expensive stuff, if still somewhat time-consuming.
