My system is shutting down while playing City of Heores.

Hey folks, I've got a fun one here. 2 of the last three times I've logged in, I've played for about ten minutes and then my computer shut down. At first it looked like a crash to desktop, but then Windows shuts down as if I'd gone Start -> Shutdown. I haven't installed / uninstalled anything in the last week or so, nor has this been a problem before. Anyone have any issues with this before?

This computer is an off the shelf Asus cg5290, i7-920 at 2.67Ghz with 9gb of ram and an Nvidia GTX260 with 512.

I checked the stickied thread about requesting help, so heres my CoH Helper log -

Also, tried completely uninstalling the graphics drivers and reinstalling the latest ones. Walking away from this computer for a little bit so I can cool off. Thanks in advance for the help, folks.

Speaking of cooling off, what are your temperatures, both GPU and CPU while playing?

Posted

@kinaki: I haven't peeked at those yet, I'll take a look next time I load up the game. Sitting at 35 out of game right now, only hitting 48 during heavy gameplay.

@TerraShock: I'll be powering down after this to check on the physical connections. Thanks!

edit: Connections are all rock solid, fans are all spinning and nary a mote of dust in the case. Off to check to the temperatures!

What concerns me too is the intermittent nature of this, and that it has happened once while working on a costume, and once just waiting at a mission door. Hrmmmmmm..

Had this issue with my wife's PC whist playing CoH, turned out to be the power supply, the graphic card was drawing too much power. Replace the power supply with a 700w with no further issues.

Posted

Shouldn't it have been doing that all along? Looking back I realize that I neglected to mention that I've had this rig for about 6-7 months, and this just started happening.

Posted

how many sticks of ram do you have? im failing to see how it has 9 gigs. but while you look at those, make sure they are all seated properly into their slots. also, see if there are any new BIOS for your motherboard.

Posted

It's got 6 sticks, hell if I know why they went that way. Physically checked them and they're all in there. Memtest also comes back clean. I'll take a look at the bios in a bit.

Posted

that makes sense to have 6 and have them be 1.5gig each. could be a power supply also like mentioned earlier. it is a piece of electrical equipment and they can go at any time. even right off the shelf.

What are your temperatures....

The new graphics can really tax video cards; mine runs 65-68 degrees celcius and that's after having increased the fan speed. It's not unreasonable that people will see 80 C temperatures on their gpu's.

If your case has bad air flow and/or if your cpu has bad cooling, this extra heat can build up and cause a system shutdown just as you described.

So, again, what are your cpu/gpu temperatures? You can google speedfan if you're unsure on how to attain these readings.

Failing excessive temperatures, a bad power supply can indeed cause this as well.

This sounds like the correct answer.

If your system only shuts down while playing the game and your temps are fine, I would chalk it up to be your power supply. I too had this problem on my old machine. The machine ran perfectly fine watching movies and browsing the web. But when I turned on the game and after a minute or two, the system would just shut down and reboot.

So if this is what it's doing, I would say its your power supply as well.

This does sound like a PSU problem - is the fan working correctly and clear of dust on the PSU.
If it is turning but clogged up a can of compressed air may solve the problem. - If it does bear in mind that you will be close to the current PSU's limit so any further expansion will probably need you to replace it in any event.

Had something similar happen once - the PSU fan failed which caused the system to shut down automatically as soon as the load caused the voltages to go out of spec.
Pointing a spare fan directly at the air intake to the psu allowed me to use it until I could fit a new one.

Thanks for the help all. I'm still concerned about it becoming a recent development, and then last night I was able to play for 3 or 4 hours with no problems at all. I would have figured that stuff like 8 player missions or ship raids would push it, but that hasn't been the case at all. I'm going to change out the PSU regardless because I'm no longer comfortable with the stock set and I'd like to look into a beefier vid card anyways. You all rock, thank you!
