Corrupt pig file?

I keep getting the following message, or similar ones, and my game has to close. How do I run the "patcher"? I've verified all the files. What should I do?

"./piggs/texWorldCZ.pigg: Corrupt pig file detected
Read failed for file: texture_library/WORLD/city_zones/venice/Canal_roof_04.texture
-1

Your data might be corrupt, please run the patcher and try again."

The patcher is the file you use to launch the game. Follow these steps exactly.

1. Double-click the shortcut that you use to launch CoH but DO NOT click Next. If a prompt from Windows 7 or Windows Vista asks for permission to run the program, give it permission.

2. Click the button that says Verify All Files above the Next button.

3. Sit back and relax while it verifies the files or go do something else for a bit, the computer will take of things as needed.

4. Once it finishes, click Next then proceed as usual.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Thanks Texas, but I've done that before. I'll try to verify the files again, but the same error happened again after doing it the last time.

Ok. I've uninstalled and reinstalled CoH after running a disk check and all that and the same error comes up and sometimes crashes the game. What now?

I have had a similar problem. What fixed it for me was to uninstall the game from my small C drive and move it to my bottomless hard drive. I know you tried to uninstall and reinstall already. Is the hard drive that your game is on nearly full? Because my C drive was very nearly full. So, I cleared a bunch of stuff off of it and uninstalled the game. Fortunately for me my .pigg file problems happened just a few weeks before Going Rogue came out in the stores. So, I bought the GR game disk and used that to reinstall the game, but this time on to my Terabyte HD. I haven't had any problems since. I am sorry for your trouble and hope this helps. If not, please don't be discouraged. Better techs than me, will answer your problems tomorrow. Good luck

The hard drive isn't full at all. I originally bought the game on disk, so I used that to reinstall the game. I just want to kick my computer sometimes.....it's been giving me a hell of a time recently.

Then post the results of these two programs:

  • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
  • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

You cut off the first part of the HijackThis log. Please repost that.

Unrelated to the pigg problem, you could stand to update your video driver.

You have way too many background programs running on that machine especially since it's only 1 GB of RAM. CoH uses more than 1 GB of memory which means caching to the hard drive. That causes slow load times and stuttering when moving around quickly. And with all those other programs... <shudder>.

You could stand to have a complete system hard driver reinstall: Save everything; make sure you have system reinstall software; wipe hard drive; reinstall system, programs, and data.

As you reinstall, keep running HijackThis to keep track of all those programs that put themselves into the start up registry and nuke the ones that shouldn't be doing that. A well behaved program only starts running when you click on it and removes itself completely when it's done. To get an idea of all the junk in your computer see here:

http://www.pchell.com/support/hijackthistutorial.shtml

Also, cut and paste your HijackThis log to here to understand it better: http://www.hijackthis.de/

It could be you don't have enough memory to deal with that pigg file.

Another way to check if it's software related is to follow the instructions here which turns off all those other programs that have insinuated themselves into the start-up registries.

Soooo...

1. At least one more GB of RAM.

2. Clean your start up registry: Go in their and hack everything out. OR Use the instructions above to turn it all off. OR my recommendation: Clean reinstall of hard drive (this will improve performance in many ways).

3. Update your graphics driver.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, ZM.

For right now, I've updated the graphics driver and turned off almost all the background programs. I have a recovery drive on my computer, so as soon as I'm ready for all the hassle, I'll save everything to an external and reformat the harddrive. I have to wait on that one for the right time because my wife has to use the computer often to get things ready for work.

After a fresh Windows install CoH now coughs up random files every 3 or 4 days.

After a fresh CoH install (following a reboot) with nothing else running (4 hours to dload) verification failed and now it wants 7 1/2 hours to fix. Graphic drivers are the latest direct from nVidia.

This same hardware has run CoH for almost 2 years prior to the Windows install, the disk has 15gb free.

I am getting tired of this.

Gerbils are for wimps. Real men use badgers.

Sounds similar to my problem, in that my computer ran CoH with no major problems for nearly 4 years only to have the files become corrupt somehow.

Ok. I followed most of Zombieman's suggestions: I stopped almost all the startup programs and updated my video driver. I also deleted all the files in the pigg folder and let the patcher replace them. This seems to have fixed the problem since the game was crashing frequently due to various corrupt pigg files. I played for a couple of hours last night and today and I didn't encounter the problem. Hopefully it's fixed.

Thanks again for all your help, ZM.

Glad to have helped.

But, I tell you, you'll see *huge* performance improvements if you increase RAM and reinstall the system. Put it on your to do list.

I'm not quite ready for the pain in the *** of reloading everything quite yet, but I'll probably just go ahead reinstall the system the next time I have a problem.

I'm kind of dunce when it comes to the inner workings of a computer; how do I go about increasing the RAM?

Based on the specifications for your machine it looks like you can go up to four GB's of Ram (Although 32 bit XP will not see the entire 4 GB). With 1 GB being the minimum when you purchased it.

Memory
Component Attributes
Memory Installed 1 GB
Maximum allowed 4 GB* (4 x 1 GB)

*Actual available memory may be less
Speed supported PC-3200 MB/sec
Type 184 pin, DDR SDRAM

With the cheapness of RAM these days it would be a good investment. Just doubling the amount you have now would be a big improvement with things other than COX.

Armed with the above information you can purchase online from Newegg or you could visit your nearest Best Buy.
