Park in a large mob of Cimerorans and go have a snack?

Like I said, your mileage might vary. I am not discounting your DA experiences, I just prefer Invul (and I don't recall people looking for DA tanks for MoSTFs, just Invul and Stone)

I have a DM/DA badger scrapper and honestly almost hate breaking him out compared to how survivable my other scrappers/tankers are, despite having gone through several rather expensive builds. Love the concept of DA, hate the execution. Again, YMMV.

I don't AFK on TFs, but I certainly could if I left Dark Regen on auto. My tank has completed MoITFs without support. One time we accidentally left the difficulty on +4 for the first mission. I didn't flinch.

This is what I'm seeking to correct. Dark Armor is a perfectly capable set, and in the hands of someone who knows how to set and play correctly, it's a verifiable beast. I've got a Dark Armor tank that has done all the hero Master TFs, and none of them with outside buffs. Please, give the video in my sig a watch. You'll see the kind of potential DA has.

My Dark tank is Dark/Ice. Don't really have an over-abundance of PBAoEs on that build. I managed to softcap smashing and lethal pretty easily in Mid's, but I'm having difficulty getting E/NE above the mid-high 30's.

I'm building him as a tanktroller, more focused on making sure the enemy can't do squat than actually dealing damage to them. To that end I'm planning on taking Ice Patch, Cloak of Fear AND Oppressive Gloom. Since the mobs will be staggering/falling down, and/or cowering in fear, I should be able to take them out at my leisure as long as my endurance holds out.

Incidentally, Dechs, my wife is running a variation of your DA/Fire build and she's absolutely loving it. He's more survivable than her DB/SR scrapper by quite a bit.

This is a great idea, although I always feel like the two control auras are overkill. They're both great in their own right, but together they seem a bit redundant. I'd encourage you to try dropping one of them to see if you really miss it.

Glad to hear it! Although, I'd be worried if a tank was less survivable than a scrapper (equal budgets assumed), unless it was a fire tank to a non-fire scrapper.

I'd be interested to hear what the variations are. Perhaps there are ideas I could use.

My tank is only level 18 at the moment, so I haven't taken either aura yet. Cloak of Fear is getting slotted with Siphon Insight to help with the S/L defense (since Ice doesn't have a whole lot of ST attacks to slot Kinetic Combats in). I took Oppressive Gloom in my Mid's build because I was running into a problem of having too many power picks that needed slotting, so I needed to take one that requires little or no slotting, and Oppressive Gloom fits that bill nicely. Plus it will stack with other people's stuns to stun bosses. I probably won't be running both of them all the time.

Well, before she finished her tank's build, her scrapper was her most survivable character (much like my softcapped BS/DA scrapper). So, it's more of a comparison between characters she plays.

I'll shoot you her build in a PM if she'd rather not post it publicly. She reads the forums, and has a forum account, but seldom posts herself. She has fewer than 100 posts to my almost 5,000.

I personally have a hard time underslotting my AoE attacks. Can't you find slots to do that? All my Tankers have been able to six-slot 4-5 attacks at least.

Right. The great beauty of Dark is that it has a lot of tools and resistances to protect you AND if it can do that for 15 seconds, you can survive nearly anything, because Dark Regeneration will make all the boo-boos better. I would regard regeneration set bonuses as superfluous -- who cares if they move you from 400 life to 575 life over the course of several seconds if you're going to hit DR and get 100% life back anyway?

I have a DA/Ice tanktroller named Sponge, and she's great. Minions are ignorable, as if they're not even there. Lts are easy to neuter with either Ice Patch or the hold. She's a bit squishier than I'd like against AVs, and there are endurance issues because I run Tough and Weave, although I'm not sure that I need to. But she's not fully IOed out, and so she'll only get better.

As for the auras, I have Oppressive Gloom, Cloak of Fear, and Death Shroud. They're useful in different situations, but you never run all three at once. OP + DS is for soloing, and DS contributes most of my damage. OP + CoF is for teams that don't need me to contribute damage. DS + CoF is for boss and AV fights where OP does nothing and the CoF only serves as a to hit debuff (and I have a Dark Watcher's Chance for Recharge Slow in there).

A DA tank doesn't rise to the apex of indestructibility that a Stone tank or some Invuln tanks reach, but they can do crazy things and they're great at what they do.

SPONGE! Were you on that CoP trial a few days ago with the guy (me) saying Dark Armor sucks and you thinking for a brief moment that I was serious? That was a fun trial. Heard good things about you.

I don't know about that. According to my survivability analysis, Dark Armor (at least mine) can sustain a lot more DPS than most invulns and stones. Maybe those kinds of analysis are flawed in favor of healing abilities. Maybe the stone tank I was with just didn't do it right, but he dropped more times than my Dark Armor tank did on the STF I ran with him.

Something about being built for perma Granite with movement speed buffs and then enough defense to softcap. Left a really bad taste in my mouth, because I not only outran him, I out-tanked him for sure.

Yep, that was me. I knew I had seen you on the forums somewhere.

I was worried about that trial but I needn't have been. It's almost all psi damage. Sponge laughs at that kind of stuff. Although Rularuu did take me down once. Not sure what he was throwing.

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with toons that are massively IOed out. I know that going by the numbers, basic Dark is not as hardy as basic Stone or basic Invuln. Sponge's S/L resistance is about 62% (I may be missing a couple slots in Tough). I'm not even sure I could cap her resistance at 90%...but that's easy for other tanks to reach. And she has no natural defence except for Weave. So it's clear that the numbers are against her.

But DA gets other compensations. We shut down minions just by being in the room, we have a terrific heal, the best self-rez in the game, and aside from knockback we have no weaknesses.

Once you spend a billion inf to IO out a toon it can probably handle anything, no matter what its powersets are. I'm still scraping together enough merits to get Sponge a Miracle +Recovery IO.

Should be do able quickly - are you running your tip missions and staying on alignment? 2 Hero merits.

(And I really have to get working on my Dark/SS tank. Mid-20s.)

I pride myself on only spending 300 million* on Soulburn Sands (the tank featured in my video).

*The 300m figure does not include the blood, sweat, and merits used to obtain things like the Kinetic Combats and +recovery uniques.

Like Bill said, 2 hero merits, or four days of 5.5 missions a day.

What's holding me back is a combination of extreme alt-itis and a casual playstyle. I only play 2-3 hours a day, if that, and I try to rotate through all my toons. I have yet to get a single hero/villain merit on any toon, but I have managed to switch some of them to Rogue/Vigilante. Eh, there's no rush.

<--- 217 characters. The hero merits are pretty much how I'm planning on getting those.

Here's my Dark/Ice build. I can't take all the credit, my wife did the majority of the work, I just tweaked it to suit my own taste.

I already had Smashing and Lethal softcapped, she helped me get the Energy and Negative up there.

Here it is: Hero Plan by Mids' Hero Designer 1.803

I am still slightly worried by endurance on both builds though But they should both be extremely survivable.

if you are gonna throwdown like that on that last build, I would go for softcapped positional def instead.

but thats just me.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

I made a dark/dark tank got him at 36 now,i love the concept of him he's just really really end heavy.Should i be sloting 2 end redux in every toggle right now until 50 if and when i start getting sets for him.I just got the end drain which will help alot just got slot it with recharge to get it coming back fast.

It's not the toggles that are doing the damage to your blue bar. Put some Endredux in your attacks, and slot Dark Consumption for recharge like you mentioned. The attack you really need to watch the end usage of is Dark Regeneration. One use of that takes out over a third of a full blue bar, so a little bit of end reduction will save a lot.

Of course, your other attacks are firing a lot faster. Each attack consumes roughly one point of endurance per second of recharge, or enough endurance to run four standard toggles unslotted. At level 36, look towards slotting some set IOs. You don't really need to worry about set bonuses too much - slotting an Acc/Dam, a Dam/End and an Acc/End IO above about level 24 will give you more accuracy, damage and endurance reduction than one Acc SO, one Damage SO, and one Endurace Reduction SO, even if they're from different sets.

Well, it's not primarily his toggles that a using a lot of end. However, two of the toggles in Dark need to be well-slotted for end reduction: Death Shroud and Cloak of Fear. But otherwise I agree; none of the other Dark toggles are going to cause you the end problems that attacks, DR, DS and CoF can, and don't need to be superslotted for end reduction.

The thing is, if you take Darkest Night you don't necessarily need Tough and Weave. While they are nice to have, I strongly recommend you take Soul Transfer.

I mean, it's a Mag 30 stun. Mag 30.

Claws, no Frost but taking GIS? See my guide for why I ask that. Could prolly sub Boxing as a Kin Combat mule instead of GIS, btw.

Here's my I19 build for my Dark/Mace, who is currently only capped to S/L, but w/free Fitness, I can fit in E/N capping too. Not horribly happy about the end consumption, but I prolly won't run Cloak of Fear all the time. Dark Regen up every 10sec too.

Edit: I should add, I'd long admired Dech's tank for capping E/N, but I thought he was giving up a shade too much to get there, at least for my playstyle. W/I19, I no longer think this is the case.
