At the time of the original Underworld, Kate Beckinsale was a couple with actor Michael Sheen, who was playing Lucien. In fact, she had his child.
Soon after, she became a couple with director Len Wiseman.
Note that Underworld 2 starred Beckinsale and was directed by Wiseman. Sheen did not appear except in re-used footage.
Underworld 3 was a prequel and had Sheen return as Lucien, but Beckinsale and Wiseman were not involved in this movie.
I'm betting, maybe, that Sheen WON'T be in the fourth movie, if Beckinsale is in it. And not just because Sheen's character died.
Underworld was pretty much a creation of Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman, and Danny McBride. McBride, at least, was involved in the writing of all the films so far.

Well, according to Grevioux, who was the originator of the story, he'd come up with the concept by blending several childhood ideas with his experiences with interracial dating.
And White Wolf's "style" is hardly THEIR creation. They ripped off other people as much as other people rip them off.

The 3D sequel is expected to feature Kate Beckinsale back in Selene's skin. Screenwriter John Hlavin previously described the movie as follows: "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements."
In other Sony release news, the studio has set a March 25, 2011 release for Roland Emmerich's Anonymous.
The film, starring Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis and Rhys Ifans, is a political thriller about who actually wrote the plays of William Shakespeare.
