A Couple of Questions
1 Yes
2 Unless you can find the original name holder, no - you cannot get that name - someone else already has it and could possibly return to the game (is NCSoft's thought). I would have been a little upset if I came back to the game - which I recently did after a years time - to see my toons names genericed just because someone else wanted my names.

Go to another server and see if it's taken there. Unless it's on "The List Of Unacceptible Names" or is a Highly Common Or Obvious Name there is a very high chance that it's available elsewhere.
2. I first started playing CoH 75 months ago, and still mostly play my primary character from that time. Someone had my character's name, so I added a period ( . ) to it. In the last five years, I have never once seen the original holder of the name, and I have opften tried to purchase a re-name, but have been told the name is already taken. My question is: Does the name search "see" the period in my character's name? If it doesn't, maybe my character already IS the name that;s "already taken". I have tried many, many times to contact the holder of my character's name, but as far as I can tell, their account has been inactive for years.
Any ideas on how I can get the name for my (consistently active) character? |

When you search for a name, it matches the string exactly. If you searched on Memphis, it wouldn't show up as active just because I have "Memphis Bill" taken.

As far as the character?
1. Add it to your friends list. Watch for a bit.
2. /getglobalname character, I *believe,* will get the global - if it doesn't have one, wow, that's been inactive for a long, long time.
Either way, send an email to the result (maybe the person has the character but decided to play on another server) and ask if they'd be willing to free up the character name for you.
Yep. I have someone on my friends list from before globals went in. A /GetGlobalName on her doesn't get a response.

It likely wouldn't have done any good even if you did find the person with the name. I've had a guy (later a pal and SG mate) after my main Villain's name for YEARS (**waves at Masque**), but I ain't givin' it up for nothin'!
Dasher thinks it'll be given up: I first started playing CoH 75 months ago, and still mostly play my primary character from that time. It's become a running gag by this point.

Dec out.

I'd have done that, but the ability to change servers is fairly recent, I created the character on the server he's on to team with my cousin, and after 75 months, I have a tremendous investment in friendships and a huge SG on the server where I have been active all this time...

...whilke the guy who got the name before me has been nowhere to be seen in all that time.

Thanks, Memphis_Bill; I tried the e-mail with no response, but the "friends" list and global name search is a GREAT idea; I'm very much obliged to you!

I'm just wondering if there's a way to find people to discuss the matter. Memphis Bill had a great suggestion, which I will try and if the owner says "no", oh, well.
I'm not accusing the guy of being a "dog in a manger", I'm just wondering if he's even still interested in CoH at all. If not, it can't hurt to ask, right?

Oh, that wasn't meant in any accusatory manner. More of a lead in for me to attention-***** to tell my little story.

In any case, testing the "/getglobalname" against online and offline names, it worked fine, but for "/getglobalname Dasher", it returned nothing.
So, alas, the first "Dasher" is apparently long gone inactive. The name isn't blocked, because it's available on other servers.
I know the "other" Dasher exists (or existed) because I actually saw the toon once, back around Issue 2; a short, broad, Tanker-looking chap in white pants and a tank-top t-shirt with sunglasses and an Elvis hairdo, sort of a "Back-Alley Brawler" motif.
Oh, well. Maybe one day they will let us transfer SG Bases between servers and I can fix the name then. :-)

I HAVE gone "dog in a manger" on one name. It's my RL email account. I have that name on every US server.

Just to clarify...
The answers to these questions are probably obvious, I just wanted to be sure.
1. If we pre-purchased GR, will we be able to just log in and the new content will be part of our Updater's download? That's how it has usually worked; in the past I've always found upgrades in CoX to be gloriously easy and painless! Thanks in advance, DASHER |
The GR update will happen when you log off, and likely has already happened. Other than early access to Demon Summoning and Dual Pistols, you won't see anything until they flip the switch on Tuesday.
