New Players? Fact or Fiction

My new friend has been playing this game long enough that she says she is "Old School". She thought I would enjoy it so I'm giving it a shot. It doesn't really look like many new players are here? Is that just the Forums or will I find the same in game? Am I missing something should I start on another server?

A defender looks kind of fun. Is that a good choice? Advice is appreciated.

Welcome to City of Heroes and the Champion server, Nippy. The only people that can answer your first question definitively work for NCSoft, and honestly, I doubt they will. However, I've gotten the impression that as of right now, it's more former veteran players returning to the game than newer players. That may change after the expansion releases next week.

Defender is an excellent choice. All ATs are viable, it just depends on what you want to do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here, or in the Player Questions section.

I would advise you to join the BMT of Champion and / or Champions United global channels if you have not done so already. Send @Cobalt Azurean or @Force a tell for an invite to BMT of Champion. You'll find people forming teams, hunting giant monsters, setting up raids, etc. there.

The best way to get in touch with other players in game, for teams and TFs and such, would be to join one of Champion's global chats. BMT of Champion and Champions United are both good choices.

Defenders are a lot of fun and come in many different flavors, all of which can be a good choice depending on what you're looking for. My advice is to make a few toons to see which one you like.

This is a pretty amazing server if I do say so myself. As for new players it's somewhat difficult to tell at times. A lot of the game is instanced base so there may be a lot of players on just all in missions. The best way to find a team on this server is to find a good supergroup. Hammers of Justice or Order of the Champion are pretty solid SGs. Another good way to find a team if super groups aka "guilds" aren't your thing there are several channels around dedicated to finding you teams. I mostly use BMT of Champion myself. It's a private channel so you'll need an invite. Shoot a tell to @Cobalt Azurean, he'll get you an invite.

Defenders are pretty amazing although they're a bit more difficult to solo with. They mostly play the buff/debuff system. Corruptors are similar but slightly weaker buff/debuffs and greater damage. Personally I say ROLL A SCRAPPER! But that's my opinion. ;D

Welcome Nippy! Roll a couple/several toons and see what you like. Defenders are solid support and welcome on any team. Join a global server chat channel like BMT of Champion for joining teams and task forces and such. Have fun!!

As others have said, with GR going live in less than a week you've come at a good time.

Yes, there are tens of thousands of new players. The best AT is controller and try to put all your power choices in the pool powers and secondaries. Slot brawl and sprint to the max.

The best time to play is Tuesday mornings. Try NOT to do missions (these are boring). Just street sweep purples until you kill one and you'll level every 10 minutes or so (this is an estimate).

Final bit of advice - don't listen to forum types. They'll steer you wrong and make sweeping, generalized statements with little factual value EVERY TIME.

It's true, our forum population isn't as large as, say Infinity, but we are pretty large in game server. If we based our population on forum we'd be a lonely sever, frickin' awesome as Mark Harmon, but lonely. But we aren't, and we are still awesome.

Edit: Champion is slipping... No one has warned this poor person about the Pingus. Be wary of them, their an evil bunch.. They stole my lunch money once..
