Open World Gameplay... is it worth it?

I love open worlds. I enjoy the freedom of exploring the world and if developers provide free style missions that you stumble upon instead of being guided to them then even better.

However some people need to be led from Point A to Point B. Running on rails gameplay. I believe it's best to support both styles of players, the goal oriented and the explorer.

Open World can be worth it, as can a very delineated world. The creator just needs to capitalize on the pros and minimize the cons of each, depending on what they are creating.
