suggestion for new scrapper

Hi guys.

I love reading these Scrapper forums and seeing advice on al types of scraps, so I thought I'd come to you for advice on my next character.

I wanted to make a new scrapper to level to 50 before the end of the summer, probably get pretty close before GR. I was wondering what kind of toon YOU guys like to play? Here's what I'm looking for:

-I almost always play with a team of 3 or more people (usually a full 8). I love doing TFs and I only do PvP when I'm bored or drunk (so just leave that out of it).

-If it's a little hard to level up, that won't matter, because I also plan on tuning it up once it gets to level 50 with full IOs.

-Once I get tuned up, what I generally do with my best characters is speed run TFs, so this I will be keeping in mind. It doesn't have to be the ideal perfect speed runner, because I realize that with some work any scrapper can be good at that.

Here's what I hope to stay away from, for whatever reason (probably because either me or my brother already have one of that type):

Dual blades, Super Reflexes, willpower, invuln, shield, energy melee or defense

Now remember, I like running TFs with friends, and probably the only thing I'd be doing solo is easy TFs

**note: I was heavily leaning toward electric armor, but it's totally up in the air now. I was also concidering broadsword. (thought- could these go together, even though they both use up alot of end?)

Thank you for your concideration =)

I made a DM/FA. It's pretty fun so far and is something a bit different, but not sure how it'll be at lvl 50. I suppose it all depends how the final game build for it is when I make it. Just a suggestion for something different though.

I've had very good success running level 50 pick-up TFs and teaming on my spines/elec. I focused my build on smash/lethal defense and regeneration. Spines/Fire would be similar... perhaps better in some aspects.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

MA/Fire, Fire/Regen, and Claws/Dark are three of my favorite scrappers I have. Both builds are very fun and were a blast leveling up. The MA/Fire can be end heavy early on, but it gets easier with consume slotted and conserve power (if you choose to take it), plus the extra damage boost from Fiery Embrace along with build up in MA is super sexy. If you want a lower maintence build that is still fun, go with fire/regen. You'll have no worries with your recovery rate, you'll just have to keep an eye on your health. But if you want to play an insanely fun scrapper that functions as a pseudo troller also, roll a Claws/Dark. The knockback and knockdown in claws is great damage mitigation and the fear and stun in dark armor is even better damage mitigation. Not to mention dark has the best self heal in the game. Only drawback to this build is that it can be end heavy depending on wether or not you have Cloak of Fear and Oppressive gloom running on top of your other toggles. The great thing with any of the builds I mentioned is that if things get too tough and you're defeated, they all have self rezes :-)

Love teaming with my Claw/Inv scrapper and its pretty damned fine solo too. Have 4 of my scrappers that I still play at 50 and that's Claw/Inv, DM/SR, Spine/Inv and Fire/Shield.

The spine/Inv always feels like showing off though.

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

I would recommend Kat/Elec. As far as BS/ is concerned, it lags behind Kat/ in every aspect(there's a current thread discussing this actually), and therefore you'd likely be happier with it than with BS/.

Since you'll be mostly teaming, ultimate survivability is likely less of a concern compared to achieving excellent DPS. Lightning Reflexes is going to allow you to reach the needed recharge levels for the top DPS Kat/ attack chain, so I think that alone makes /Elec a great alternative to /SR for a secondary. Besides this, Kat has DA, which works wonders when combined with a resist-based secondary.

I'm leveling a Kat/Elec right now who's at 20 - rough going until I got DA, which helped quite a bit. Endurance has been an issue, but I'm hoping that with just picking up Energize and looking at picking up Stamina at 22, this will no longer be a concern.

Not 22, but 35. Once you get Power Sink, endurance is a total non-issue on a /Elec: you can completely refill your endurance bar every 30 seconds.

I got to 21 last night, and Energize with 3 recharge + Hasten has helped a lot. I think that Stamina with a Perf Shifter proc will allow for a much smoother and more enjoyable ride to get to Power Sink.

My vote goes for Fire/Regen. It's a ton of fun, starts off strong and stays strong through the entire game. It plays differently then many scrappers, you actually kite around to minimize damage to yourself, and to give you breathing room for your heals.

And it does a ton of damage.

My recommendation would be to hold off until Kinetic Melee, then roll a KM/*. Assuming no changes to the list of Scrapper secondaries, then I'd probably go with Electric Armor.

Fire is good at damage... but if you're kiting, not to mention all of the click powers in /regen, you're actually lowering your DPS compared to other secondaries that can simply allow you to run an attack chain uninterrupted. Mind you, I'm not saying /regen is bad, my first 50 was a DM/Regen back in the I1-I4 hayday, but it does have a drawback in that it is more active than other secondaries.

You don't have to kite all the time. Kiting is for when you bite off more then you can chew and need to survive. That is one of the things about Fire/Regen, it will survive better then pretty much any other secondary when played right. If a Fire/WP bites off a huge chunk of aggro, and starts taking significant amount of damage, he can't just leap back a few feat, fire off a heal, and get right back in the game. He either has to completely run away, giving himself enough time to regen back, pop pills(Which the regen can do as well), or stand in the middle of the mob and hope like hell that RTTC suddenly starts working twice as fast. :P
