Slotting help for an Ice/Mental/Cold blaster!

Hello everyone!

I have recently made an Ice/Mental blaster, quite an entertaining character, in fact. She's currently at lvl 23, and I've considered to take Cold mastery as her ancillery pool. Nonetheless, I'm thinking of, how I must slot her when time comes for that nad have a problem thinking what I must slot for. Anyone have experience with this set or can give me any slotting ideas nonetheless?

Yeah giving out a build would help, so I can have a look at it for you. Consider building for good Smashing/Lethal defence to combine with your Cold shield from the APP.

I'm not familiar with high end IO builds for blasters, so I can't really comment on what bonuses you should be aiming for, but I do have some comments on power choices and the number of slots given to things.

First, please don't skip ice bolt. I know you've got other ST attacks, but not all of them can be fired through mez. Even before the defiance changes I wouldn't have skipped either of the first two blasts, but nowadays I wouldn't do it in a million years.

Second, and to make room to take ice bolt, world of confusion is nigh-useless. Every 4 seconds it tosses out less than half a brawl's worth of damage and a 1.5 second duration minion-only confuse that has a -25% tohit penalty. It is about as close to doing literally nothing as a power can come while still technically having an effect. The only way it becomes useful at all is at level 50 slotted with the purple confuse proc, and even then I wouldn't bother considering it'll get turned off every time a mezzer so much as sneezes in your direction. Dropping it allows you to fit in ice bolt and frees up a few slots too.

Also, I don't really understand why you've given TK thrust 5 slots. It's not a damage power (roughly 2/3rds of ice bolt on a longer recharge), it's a 'get-the-heck-out-of-my-face-you-ugly-boss' power. For that role all it really needs is an acc or two, and that frees up some slots for ice bolt.

Finally, hibernate seems slightly overslotted for me. It really doesn't need end enhancement, and two or 3 heal/rech are more than enough to get you out quickly and get the recharge down to around the 120s nophase period. I would pull a slot out.

With the slots you've freed I would slot ice bolt up to 5, add another to ice blast and subdual, and give freeze ray another slot with an acc/hold/rech in it. If you're not going to end up with more than 45% or so acc in each attack, I'd also suggest getting some global acc bonuses, a kismet 6% in CJ, or both.

In fact, I wouldn't mind adding Ice Bolt to my build, both for reasons you mention, but also because it is difficult for m to have an effective attack chain without it.

Tbh I didn't know WoC was such a sucky power! I thought it was a rather useful power in fact, but I won't doubt a veteran there, especially not since I technically lack room for ice bolt.

Actually, TK thrust is in fact a interesting mitigation power to me, as it gives the second highest dmg bonus (13.7 %) to my other powers. That said, then you might be right, 5 slots might be a bit too much.

About Hibernate, I have never tried the power, i have basically slotted it in mind of recharge, as I consider it a super rest, letting me rest in mobs without worrying for botherness, due to the invulnerability effect, so you're likely right that slotting it as much as I have done might be a bit too wasteful.

Oh, and I do think I'll try and slot for S/L def too.

Hey Janus, sorry about the late reply!

Well I had a look at your build for you, and made quite a lot of changes, hopefully for the better!

1) I noticed you went for a lot of Max HP bonuses, and with the accolades you cap your HP without the need of Hoarfrost, so that power isn't really necessary.

2) I tried to give you some more S/L defence using a few Kinetic Combats, so I used them in Mind Probe and Telekinetic Thrust. You have 32% S/L defence which is nice as you can pop a purple insp and be softcapped. Mind Probe is a decent ST attack aswell.

3) I originally took out BFR for Mind Probe but then I swapped it out for Hoarfrost, and put some Hami-O's in it for you so it still should be decent. I also put the Lockdown quad in your Freeze Ray to make the numbers a little better. Personally, I would just drop BFR since I find the animation too long and whatever I'm trying to hold should be dead in a few seconds anyway. Freeze Ray is more useful since the animation is quick and good for soloing I guess.

4) I swapped Hasten in for Psychic Scream. Blizzard is one of my favourite nukes and I would want that coming back as fast as possible. You should also be able to avoid the end debuff that it givies with an end-mod slotted, fully saturated Drain Psyche. (IIRC). Hasten also obviously helps out alot with Drain Psyche, Hibernate, and all your other attacks.

5) I swapped the Posi procs in for the Dam/End piece as you shouldn't be having any end problems with Drain Psyche up most of the time.

Concerning cost, the Kinetic Combats will set you back a fair bit, but I avoided the Basilisk's Gaze quad.

I wasn't sure what your budget was so I didn't slot purples (except for the Apoc proc

Well I had a look at your build for you, and made quite a lot of changes, hopefully for the better!

1) I noticed you went for a lot of Max HP bonuses, and with the accolades you cap your HP without the need of Hoarfrost, so that power isn't really necessary.

Freeze Ray is more useful since the animation is quick and good for soloing I guess.

4) I swapped Hasten in for Psychic Scream. Blizzard is one of my favourite nukes and I would want that coming back as fast as possible. You should also be able to avoid the end debuff that it givies with an end-mod slotted, fully saturated Drain Psyche. (IIRC). Hasten also obviously helps out alot with Drain Psyche, Hibernate, and all your other attacks.

5) I swapped the Posi procs in for the Dam/End piece as you shouldn't be having any end problems with Drain Psyche up most of the time.

Concerning cost, the Kinetic Combats will set you back a fair bit, but I avoided the Basilisk's Gaze quad.

I wasn't sure what your budget was so I didn't slot purples (except for the Apoc proc

Hi Tux, ty for taking your time I will reply each of your points by using the numbers:

1) No Hoarfrost? No problem.

2) Ok, about Mind Probe, I don't mind the power, just don't see it in my theme. Won't mind having the power though, especially not for more S/L defense.

3) BFR. I do want the power, hence to why I have taken it in the first place :P I don't know much about enemy resistance, but my practical plan with it is to hold bosses by using BFR and FR. Oh, and about the animation, then that's my favourite animation in the game. It looks awesome, IMHO!

4) No way. No offense, but Psi scream is my favourite cone attack (that is moderate dmg) and although I love all nukes like the next guy (violent guy that is), I don't want something like psi scream to be switched out for hasten. Sorry, but it won't happen.

5) Don't follow you. I, actually, don't concentrate on the end from Dam/End rather than the damaga, especially in this build particularly.

Oh, and no problem about kinetic combat I shall see what I can edit in my build, so thank you for your critique

2) Yeah it's good for SL defence, but it doesn't really matter whether you use it or not tbh.

3) Yep, some people do love that animation.

4) Good to see this game has so much variety, I think you will have your hands full with your ST blasts, Frost Breath, and Psychic Shockwave (which is your best AoE IMO), but each to their own so good for you. Psy Scream also looks really cool when you change around the colours.

5) Putting in the proc from the Positron's Blast set, (Chance for Energy) instead of the Dam/End piece still maxes you out on damage (95% after ED) but gives you less end redux which you shouldn't be worried out anyway with Drain Psyche up most of the time. Hope that makes it a bit clearer.
