Is the character name checker broken?

Has it ever worked?
I can't remember it working on EU servers.

Under exactly the right conditions, it works. Frequently, it does not. To REALLY check if a name is available, make a throw-away toon with that name to see.

The one on the character select screen works.
The one on the character generation screen does not.
This reportedly ties into a database access issue that the developers are hesitant to try and fix at this time since the system is largely working as intended.
So if you want to check a character name: do so BEFORE you generate the character.

Yeah, the Bio name check seems to have gotten broken shortly after it appeared.
And half the time, the one on the Character Select screen isn't reliable, either. I now just log in one of my characters, and attempt to /friend the name I'm interested in. If it's added to my list, or says I can't befriend a <opposite faction>, I know someone already has it. Otherwise, I'm good to go.
