Ice/? Dominator

Hey everyone. After getting my 4th Villain to 50, I wanted to turn my attention to Dominators.

A while back, I had a 30ish Ice/Psy Dominator, but he never really "clicked" for me, and I ended up deleting him to make room for some other toons.

While I was very interested in creating an Earth Dom, I decided against it, due to the fact that I already have an Earth Troller at 50, and I'd like to take on a fresh set.

The only Control Primary that I have not gotten past level 40 is Ice/ and, while Trollers can be great, none of the secondaries seemed to mesh well with Ice/.

Now, onto my question. What would you say is the best Secondary to pair with Ice/ ? Icy Assault seems like an obvious thematic pairing but, from what I know about Ice sets, they generally are not high on damage. I will be mostly soloing this toon to 50, so I would like a set that meshes well with Ice/ while providing enough damage to solo effectively. Maybe /Fire?

I think an ice/elec dom would do pretty good. With ice slick and artic air you can afford to be in melee for some of elec's better attacks


/gignore @username is the best feature of this game. It's also probably the least used feature.

I lvled a fire/fire dom, plant/thorn dom, elec/elec blaster, dark/dark defender and had a blast doing it. I think you should go Ice/Ice for thematic pairing, unless you plan to use it in PvP. I am not a RPer, but I do like matching primary with secondary powers.

Ice/earth might be a combo to try. Arctic Air+Mudpots seems a nice combo, and for looks you could color the /earth with an icy gem theme. (as the stone powers can now be customized into gemstones.) VoilĂ - ice mallets!
That and the arctic air/ice slick make the melee/mallets safe.

Elec, Fire, Psi. After the I15 Dom changes (still refusing to call them a buff) Psi got rebalanced a bit so it's not quite as tedious to level to PSW, Fire puts out excellent AoE, and Elec's still pretty good even after it got nerfed.

Ice/Thorns worked out to be a good combo for me. The shorter range attacks are nice with the Ice set, as you can pull them off relatively safely, and the -Def and Toxic DoTs are a pleasant bonus.

Given that you can do a lot in melee with Ice/ in relative safety, /Earth might be good too, if you have any interest in the set.

Ice/Thorns, Ice/Psi, and Ice/Electric...not necessarily in that order.


My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi

I'll vote for Ice/Stone as both primary and secondary are nice melee focused sets. It does work better on fewer high level mobs than on lots of -1s or even cons.

A Norse theme is also a perfect fit (think Frost giants)

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Now it's even harder to choose! There are too many good choices.

I'm torn between Ice/Elec and Ice/Earth. Has anyone played either one of these?

I am really liking my Ice/Psi. It is not a massive tedium to get to Shockwave now. I would put my hat in for that since it is fun.

I'm still working on my /earth dom, and am holding out for electric/ to do an /electricity dom. Still from an academic standpoint, here's the rundown:

electricity:
2 melee attacks, 1 small AoE melee attack (high damage), 1 cone, 1 snipe, one quirky pet-voltaic sentinel. Voltaic cannot be targeted, and doesn't last all that long. It will do attacks for you, but gives you all its aggro. Still, its attacks don't use your endurance.
Boost power: build up.

It's kind of a jack of all trades setup, leaning ST ranged, with a -end secondary effect for mitigation. Having played sapping-bent toons, I can tell you this: sapping is all or nothing. If you don't have a big -end power, or don't team with someone with one, the -end is not going to help you much. On the plus side, you do have buildup to pair with your snipe/thunderstrike to put down some tidy burst damage.

earth:
3 melee, 2 ranged, 2 AoE attacks, 2 AoE attacks, (both close) and a damage/slow aura.
Boost power: Power boost. (note: power boost wil help your controls and slows, but not your knockback.)

The melee attacks are slow, heavy hitting attacks, the ranged attacks are likewise slow. (some even slower, actually.) About all attacks can knock foes down/up/back, so foes will have trouble standing on their two feet to attack you. The slowish attacks are strong enough tho mitigate the long cast times, and the screen shakes for some *oomph.* Your strongest melee attack does extreme damage and puts a hold on its target. As all your attacks are close, you'll find yourself using ranged attacks for openers or knockaround, (stone spears is about like having a ranged air superiority) but most of the real business will happen in their face. Oh, and hurl boulder? Slooooow.

*edit* Oh, and many of the earth attack need you to be grounded to work. Usually not a problem, but it can be annoying in a few flying situations.

My interest piqued by this thread, i made an ice/thorn dom today and soloed her to 6. The early-level feel was really smooth, smoother than i expected, and i think it was greatly due to /thorn. I've never played with /thorn before, and i was very pleasantly surprised how the first three attacks had a great dmg/recharge/animation ratio, with early aoe, and -def to ease the lack of acc slotting.

Not to mention that the new organic armor pieces are awesome, and can look a lot like ice (or wood, on my plant/earth dom)

This won't be a fast farming/AV soloing combo, and will suffer the usual groans against s/l resists, but i see some synergy between ice slick/AA/thorntrops, and the melee focus of thorns. Were i to IO her out, i'd try to get a very high s/l def along with permadom just for the lack of an every-spawn hard control. I imagine she'd feel very scrappery.

If i knew how to link an image, i'd do so - i really like her costume

Yep I have an Ice/Stone.

Ice Patch to limit the alpha, shiver + AA to get the mobs at the -rech cap and then just smash.

After looking at the /Earth powerset again, Ice/Earth is looking like a really good pairing.

Because of both concept (Stone set to Crystals and recolored = Ice) and the synergy, I think I'll be going with that.

Ice/Thorns is awesome fun and with power customization and the new organic costume options you can really make the "thorns" look like shards of ice you're flinging off. Now why they do toxic damage over time if thats what they are is beyond me...but you could just imagine it as low-resisted freezer burn or something.

The combo is nice cause the confuse aura makes it safe to get up close and use thorns. I imagine /earth would be nice for the same reason. I paired grav/earth and I can tell you the singularity really doesn't want anything to stay in melee with me long enough for me to slap a couple attacks on it.

its barely been mentioned, but i loved my ice/fire dom. lots of mitigation and fire rips though mobs.
