Constant Crashing even when idling

City of Heroes tends to crash on me very often, whether it be in the middle of a battle, or simple idling in Pocket D or in Atlas Park, generally without warning. So far I haven't found out a way to directly cause a crash, so as far as I know, they're random.

Here are the logs. I know the sound card drivers are out of date, but I'm unable to find ones that ARE up to date, regardless, CoX crashes when I have sound options set to 0.

Bump.

This is getting annoying, at times it won't crash for a few hours, and others in bursts of 3-4 minutes.

ANY help is appreciated.

It looks like you are running the game through Steam. Don't do that, it causes instability in some systems. Create a desktop shortcut to cohupdater and run the game through that with Steam turned off.

If you aren't running through Steam then what type of crash? Just the game crashing or the entire system crashing? Blue screen or complete reboot/shutdown?

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

I have steam running, but I do not run the game through Steam, I don't even own a steam version of CoH to do so.

Also it's a crash to desktop. Next time it occurs, I'll copy and paste the message I get.

Check your memory usage next time it happens also. While you might have plenty of memory, the program itself has it's own limitations and can become unstable once it reaches a certain load.

I'm not saying that's definitely the problem, but it's a possibility. Many people have been complaining about memory leaks for years. Personally, I think it's a memory basement instead. It's not that the memory is being lost due to removing memory addresses without first giving the address back to the system to reallocate later, it's that the game saves a bunch of information that you almost never need, just in case it wants to access it again later.

Even without moving or doing anything, little things like your global channels, and info about players that you are teamed with (or not teamed with that pass near to you) can still gradually add to the heap. On a side note, I haven't had that type of crash happen to me in a while.

It finally crashed again, taking its sweet time now that I was wanting it to. Memory Usage at time of crash was 1.05 GB, about the norm.

Here is the dump logs.

.. I know what the problem is... and you're not going to like it.

Here's your error code: 0xC0000005

Now, Microsoft is, as usual, cryptic on exactly WHAT this error means: http://support.microsoft.com/search/...%3D1033&mode=r

According to Google, this could mean: http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html

Quote:
The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations.
Well... you're not using Xp... from the log you are using NT6... 64bit... with an Nvidia graphics card... which certainly qualifies for incorrect / corrupt device driver.

However, your audio driver files are also out of date, so they could be causing the crash... or your memory could be going bad.

So, first step, check your memory.

Go download a copy of Memtest86+ : http://www.memtest.org/

Run it overnight.

If it returns any errors... start budgeting for new memory.

If you can run Memtest without any errors, look into changing your Nvidia driver set and finding updated drivers for your sound chip.

It's actually Windows 7 (Unsure if NT6 is part of that, they're related but not at the same time.)...

I've ran memtest over night, no issues, I've also updated my Nvidia graphics card to the newest Beta drivers.

Beyond that I can't seem to find updated sound card drivers, and I had some suspicions that those are the main issues.. I've downloaded the newest Realtek drivers but they were of no help whatsoever since they apparently didn't even change the verison number. (meaning they did not install correctly >.<)

Unfortunately the built-in sound chip is just listed as "High Definition Audio Device" using MS drivers. I'm having issues finding updated ones past the ones I have besides the unworking Realtek.

Heh. Win7 = NT6.

Okay, so good news it's not an obvious hardware error.

well. There's two ways you can test this idea.

The first is to disable the driver through the Windows Device Manager.

The second is to turn off the onboard sound in the bios. Depending on what kind of motherboard you have, you should have a little text scroll when you turn the computer on that says something like: "Hit (button) to access setup

That button could be:
  • Escape
  • F2
  • F8
  • F10
  • F12
  • Delete
If you can get into the bios and turn the onboard sound off, or disable the driver, and you don't run into any more crashes, then it would be your sound chip causing problems.

I wouldn't actually be too surprised if this was the issue since Microsoft made a pretty boneheaded move with DirectX 10: http://microsoft.wikia.com/wiki/DirectX :: Microsoft dropped the DirectX Audio Hardware Acceleration, instead running all audio through the Central Processor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectSound

The reason why this might be an issue "now" for you is that with Issue 17, there was an update to the Audio Engine: http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/pat...ase_notes.html

I don't know if this was the expected move to an OpenAL backend for the game, but it might be why the game suddenly started crashing when it had worked perfectly.

Pretty much means that "Windows 7" is just a big patch to Windows Vista. Nothing's new, or at least not enough for it to be advertised as a new OS. Bunch of BS Microsoft is.

Anyhow, I've been having the same problem with my CoH as well. I actually posted a thread in this forum under "Game keeps crashing." You can read it if you want, but pretty much all I did was reformat my computer since I was fed up with wasting time downloading new drivers/antiviruses/malwares/registry cleaners etc.
