Can't start CoH - Resolution: Not supported

My friend who has just gotten CoH cannot get past the "I Agree" button. Upon clicking it he is greeted with an Error that says:

"Resolution 1024 x768 not supported in fullscreen mode. Defaulting to 800 x 600"

We tried another resolution and he ended up with this:

"Resolution 800 x 600 not supported in fullscreen mode. Defaulting to 800 x 600"

Anyone know what could be causing this problem for him? He is running an Nvidia Geforce 9100 with freshly updated drivers (this was happening even bother that) and even starting in safe mode has not helped.

out of wondering, how did he install City of Heroes?

Not sure what you mean, be a bit more specific if you can. He installed it by disk from the Architect edition to Program Files (x86) on the Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit version.

The problem is that he doesn't have a gaming video card installed. In fact many built in graphics chips are more powerful than the 9100.

In Nvidia cards and most others the first number of the card is basically what generation the card is. 7950 is the 7 series, 8800 is the 8 series etc.. The second number is how powerful the card is graphically. As the cards advance through series then they do become more powerful so a 9800 is more powerful than an 8800. But a 100 is the absolute bottom of the line card intended only for browsing the internet and running non graphically intensive programs.

I'm actually surprised if he can even run the game in safe mode. Sorry for the bad news but odds are that his system just isn't up to running the game.

Not true. Having a 9100 means he will have to play at or near the lowest settings, but it doesn't mean he can't play. The problem is that the game is trying to set a graphics mode that the monitor doesn't support. The quick fix is to switch the game to windowed mode.

I know how to do this by editing the registry: run regedit and change the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Cryptic/COH/fullScreen" from 1 to 0. There's also a COH graphics changer you can use if you're not comfortable editing the registry, but I don't know what the download URL is.

now, see, I've got a motherboard with the integrated Geforce 6100 GPU, and granted, while it was basically an Nforce4 with a downclocked NV44, CoH will still boot and run on that system. Granted, it's not capable of driving anything but low, but the game at least should run. I mean, I can still force the game to run on a Radeon 9200 add-in card, and it will still run on Intel Integrated Chipsets...

A crash out on the resolution indicates there's another problem at hand.

Now, it might be that his friend is using OEM drivers for his graphics cards which have had OpenGL support stripped. Updating with new drivers from Nvidia's site may address that issue.

or yeah, trying to force a resolution that the monitor doesn't support. That would do it too.

I had a similar problem running the game on 64bit Windows 7. Try right clicking the shortcut and selecting properties. Click the compatability tab, and check "Disable Display scaling on High DPI settings" Apply then exit and try to run the program again. My issue was a little different, so I'm not sure it will work, but it doesn't hurt to try.
