They give away costume codes all the time. They may post here, they may have it on FB, they may have it on Twitter. Since cutting-and-pasting the code is too easy, they often embed it in some flashy piece of artwork that you actually have to read, and then type. Sometimes the code is mirror-imaged, upside-down, etc. to make it more difficult.
Also, if this is your first time...remember that you are up against many thousands of people competing with you. Hope to win, be prepared to lose.
And, as slaad was (I think) getting at--make sure you're going after the correct code. They often post them two at a time, one for NA and one for EU. Don't mix them up, because they won't work, and you'll lose time.

Don't you see this is a plot? They're trying to hype everyone up about it, then someone is going to open a new thread Q_Q'ing about how they wasted their money on it or getting it for free. They'll Q_Q about anything.
