A few quick points for you, since you haven't even started playing yet.

1) There is no "gear" in city of Heroes. Instead, we have Enhancement, which are similar to gear, but also different. Enhancements are slotted into your powers to increase their effectiveness. There are enhancements for almost anything; damage, accuracy, recharge, and more are all covered. This differs from gear in that a) they are not universal benefits, they only benefit the power they are slotted in, and b) They always do the same thing for every power. There's a big section in the tutorial about enhancements, I'd read up on that when you get there. =D

2) You won't get to PvP on a trial account, at least by conventional means. Trial accounts can only get to level 14, and you need to be level 15 to enter the PvP zone of bloody bay. Technically, you could use the arena, but since trial account cannot start teams or send private messages, that'd be difficult. Why do we have these lovely restrictions you ask? Well, you can blame the spammers and RMT'ers for that.

3) PvP is not very popular in this game. If you came to PvP, you may end up being disappointed. PvP was changed drastically with Issue 13 in 2008, and since then much of the PvP crowd has left. There are a few PvP'ers left, mainly on the Freedom server, but other than that PvP is scarce.

Hope this helps.

That's ("they are not universal benefits") isn't really true... at all, for Set Invention Enhancements. If you slot multiple of the same set in a power, you will get the 'set bonus' which applies across your entire character, and some of the special invention enhancements apply a universal bonus of some sort themselves (Luck of the Gambler: +Recharge is a much-loved example).

CoH is definitely a different and multi-leveled (and I don't mean character levels!) game, where you can play and enjoy it if you're a pure casual player (something most other non-Hello Kitty Online MMOs are designed to keep out), or some definition of 'hard core'.

Yeah, enhancements make things interesting. You're going to be looking into sets and such if/when you go to a full account. (There's some argument as to if it's "gear" or not - I don't see them that way, personally.)

Will you be able to get them solo... Yes. However, it may take time.
- Enhancements will always drop.
- Set Invention enhancement recipes will drop as well. Some will benefit you more than others - sometimes just from getting more value out of fewer slots, others from the set bonuses of having multiple pieces of the same set.
- Purple recipes are (generally) the top end. You'll see them from level 47-50. They're rare. You can get them solo - sometimes rapidly, sometimes not seeing one for months. They are, as mentioned, rare.
- PVP recipes are exceptionally rare, as they only *have a chance* to drop from other players you defeat. (No NPCs in the PVP zones will drop them, for instance.)
- You can also work up a nice bundle of INF (money/gold/whatever - it's "influence" or "infamy" here) and try to buy them on the market (Wentworths or the Black Market depending on the side you're on.) Some can get.... rather expensive.

It is worth noting that no enhancements are "Bind on drop" or whatever the phrase is. You can buy and sell almost anything at the Auction House*.

*There are a very few things the AH can't handle (combined HO's) and a very few things that are sold in private transactions because the AH has a cap on how large a transaction can be. [A very very large cap. ] There may be other minor exceptions I can't think of.

Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.

So you think you're a hero, huh.

They are introducing "bind on pickup" (BOP)/No drop (you were merging WoW and EQ, Fulmens ) enhancements with GR (Newly created characters get five special IOs that have an expiring proc) - but only with the pre-order and they won't be of a level to be competitive in PVP.

I wasn't really covering IO sets because those are pretty difficult to get a good grasp on, and they're pretty expensive. By universal, I was comparing it to the "gear" found in most games. An example would be something like "The armor of awesomeness - Increases defense by 15%" whereas our enhancements only affect the power they are slotted in.

I know about IO sets, I was just trying to not confuse anybody. IO sets were very confusing for me when I first heard of them.

That usually my kind of advice, too. Mostly the markets and inventions should be eased into. Jumping in with both feet is liable to be more of a massive info dump than most people can handle.

Dec out.
