My first SoA, a Crab Spider. Where do I go with this?
I find my Crab (I believe he's level 32-34 now) is awesome on teams, but can evaporate the blue bar a bit quickly at times.
Solo, however, I find he's far too squishy and his Endurance issues become even more apparent. At the moment I can't see him soloing at anything/x8, and indeed found soloing at x1 difficult enough that I gave him a Bane secondary build to switch to for soloing. Defensive IO set bonuses and pets could go a long way to alter that, I imagine. I certainly don't have room for Tough and Weave in the build, and given his Endurance issues I wouldn't want to be running them anyway.

Huh. Even at 27 I've found I can solo pretty consistantly at X3 or X4 if I'm careful, albiet at +0. Maybe that's just a difference in builds though?
So I recently decided to make a VEAT for the very first time, a soldier, and wouldn't you know it they're kinda fun!
Before I knew it I hit 27, and at this point I've started doing more research on just what I might wanna do with this character. The problem is, there are so many things that just look so good that it's difficult to decide what exactly to take. I want Tough/Weave and the pets and the AOE's and the Tactical Training and Leadership and... Yeah, I doubt I'm the only one who's ever had this problem, so I think I could use a little help in narrowing down what to take for my Crab's primary build. One of the main things I've always wanted is to be able to solo on at least -1/X8 if not +0/X8. I've no idea how hard it would be to have a build that could do this though. The other thing is that I have no idea if that would even be possible without IO's, as something I should mention is that I am utterly broke redside. In fact, part of me is kind of hoping a Crab would make for an at least passable inf maker so I could start funding various IO projects, both for my Crab and for other characters, since I know they're rather AOE oriented and fairly tough to kill. So yeah, I'm certainly open to advice and direction here. With this many good powers it's honestly tough to decide on anything. |

And I think one of my original questions still stands, will a Crab Spider be strong enough solo to act as my primary, or at least main source of income when it's to try and go for an IO build? I'm rather focused right now on that, as a Crab seems like the first redside character I've really liked enough to be confident I'm gonna take it to 50, and I'm kinda concerned it's just not going to be that good solo on SO's alone.
I guess moreso than advice I'm looking for feedback, opinions from those who have taken a Crab to 50 already. It's awesome so far, but am I setting myself up for disappointment later by expecting so much out of it?
I solo'd my crab practically all the way to 50 and it was the smoothest ride I've had in COX. My other 50s were a fire/kintroller and a bots/poison mm and my crab has been the most fun to play out of all my toons. I think it just fits my play style really well, I don't know.
My only complaint, if that, is that the build is so tight, and there are still powers I can't fit in. Thank god for ninja run.
So I can tell you first hand it solos really well. If you go the pets route, you are like your own little army. I went all 3 pets, with some good recharge, double leaderships, and soft capped ranged defense. I have fantasies about a second build where I drop all but the middle pet, pick up tough and weave, and make a hover spider, but as a dedicated solo'er, I don't make enough money to fund my many alts, let alone second builds at this point.
I'm waiting until GR until I start to play her some more, because she is the toon I'm going to go chasing incarnates with, and I don't want to have to respec any more than I absolutely have to.
I think I might even go for two assault toggles - bringing 30% extra damage around for entire teams is nothing to sneeze at and worth the slots for my style of play. I got one to 17 so far and the only bad first impression is that the powers take a good while to charge and the end cost is kinda bugging me but it always does before stamina.

Some quick advice: Avoid the vendors except for selling enhancements and junk set IOs. market all your salvage and craft then market your IOs. Check before crafting to be sure they're worth anything, sometimes the crafted sells for less than rare salvage, and you don't want to suck that loss. But redside you can make a lot of inf selling on the market.
Do not price your stuff high, remember the highest bid goes to the lowest price. Many hardcore marketers sell everything for 1 inf except specific high-ticket items. I found I made double the inf by listing my salvage less than 100 each. they sell so much faster that I end up making way more over time even if it is a small bit less per sale. And the times that a single computer virus or unquenchable flame sells for 100,000 way makes up for the 8 or 9 that sell for less than the vendor's 250 or 1,000. Most good crafted uncommon recipes go for 1-3 million, and only cost a few thousand in salvage.
Sell everything. You'll have money fast. Someone on the market forum just did a test and in 1 hour of AE time, and a total of 86 minutes spread over 10 days crafting and selling what he got with the tickets earned over 200 million. Total game time invested was under 3 hours.
It seems silly, but if you slot the junk and sell the good stuff, you get the best results. =)

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
I am going crazy with my Crab spec myself. Having 2 builds I can pick from with Arbiter. I have gone broke experimenting. Thank god I sold some salvage worth 1mill... (Love you big spenders by the way).
I am still getting used to the crab..but when I did a respec (freeone) at 24 I picked up only crab attacks (ranged minus one AOE).... I took the Soldier Def and Offense + Crab Armor.
So far I can take some pretty serious blows....
Now to the question to those that have already experimented. How tough is the crab if I took the Resist and Def buff of soldier combined with the Crab versions and full slot those?
On top of that leaping tree combat jump defense.
Reason I ask is this is the route I was going to go...concentration on my own Defense ..slot out stamina and accuracy ... so that I can dive in Aoe aoe aoe...debuff..and pounce out of the cluster fudge I jumped into.
I have noticed every time I go in (i do wait like 10 seconds) and go nuts ....I pull all agro on top of me.....(crabs dont need a taunt just hit suppression =p) which sucks.
now with what I have at 25 I can take some serious hits but not for long ....I hope the answer i receive is ..."yes, a focus on your own defenses (not auras) both soldier and crab full slot will make you strong like ox"...... Then I will feel better.

Here is the build I am working on for my current Crab - she is a hybrid melee/ranged/ae character who can fill in for a brute/tank. She is still only level 45, so not completely there but my plan is to max her resistances and softcap defenses to all 3 positions:

My crab got io's last week for roughly 300 mill and he works way better than expected. I took the main aoes and only two st attacks. I fight out of hover (which works wonders) and capped my ranged def. Serum is close to perma as well as i have 66% recharge. I picked up toughand my resistance is also nice, between that and capped ranged def my crab is a beast, and my blue bar doesnt get eaten away as fast as i thought, heres build.
