New Player
Hello all, I am currently on a trial acct. and have a few questions, this may or may not be the right place to post but...
Which server is recommended for a new guy? I am looking to get into the game after a very very long AFK. I would also really like to know if there are any SG's out there with active members, it would be nice to log in at any given time of day to see there are 10-20 or more people on, familiar faces. I have never seen anything past lvl 30-ish hero side and lvl 20-ish villain side, pretty much just soloed the whole time and I think the boredom of that process is what drove me away the last time. The thought of playing in a group setting sounds much more fun and thats why I am wanting to come back and give it another shot. Unless the feedback I receive leans towards a dieing playerbase, I wouldnt hesitate upgrading to a normal acct and being a daily player. Thanks in advance for any response to this post, hopefully there will be a flood of helpful replies. |
regarding your questions about super groups - the best suggestion I can give you would be to go to the server section of the forums here. each server has a pinned thread for SG information and there are always many postings by SGs in their server forum. you can check out the information they have posted to see if they might be a good home for you. many have web sites you can visit to get additional information about them as well as how to contact them to get an invite.
if you haven't already decided on what server, or servers, you will use, then you may want to look at the population at the time you normally play. when you log in, the last server you logged into is at the top of the list. after that, they are listed from least number of people on to most number of people on. usually Freedom and Virtue will be at the bottom of the list (as the busiest servers) but that can vary a bit if you play at off-hours. and some people like being on less populated servers - less lag, etc.
shameless plug

I reccomend Freedom server, which people from smaller servers will bash in just a moment. It has a high population and you can get on a team on trial by putting "On Trial. Blinds OK." in your search/team text.
Unfortunately if you're limited to level 15, you won't see any much higher level. You'd die walking down the street in Talos, my favorite area as most of the conveniences are right around the same area. Atlas, SC, Talos, and PI have the highest populations out there.
Remember though, when doing a /whoall you can't see those on missions, and most of this is missions.
Sorry our trial sucks so bad. Level 15 is so low and I think you can only have 50k inf. You can buy exactly squat with 50k inf.
As for active SGs, mine's a marketing SG, but some of us do stuff together. If you have a Fire/Rad controller show up on the dirt hill in Talos [there are no bad guys up there] at 8pm central on Monday. Also, look at the server forum for Freedom. The Freedom Hoard is always running something. Less than 15 you are pretty much only running the two Positron Task Forces.
When way low, stand outside the sewers in Atlas. Just use local, I think that's all you can, and ask the gathering people to be on their team. Tell them you're on trial, they might treat you nice. I don't know how you'd get on a team in the Hollows or SC. You could always go to the mission room in AE if you want someone to bring you along for company on some farming mission. No one uses AE for what it was intended anymore.
And please, don't judge any server on how their Atlas Park is.
Good to have you.
I reccomend Freedom server, which people from smaller servers will bash in just a moment.

It's simply a side effect of it being a highly populated server rather than anything inherent to the server itself. More people = more jerks, it is unfortunately unavoidable.
I'm sure the percentage of jerks is about the same on the lower population servers, but it seems to be more obvious on Freedom.
Or possibly....there actually ARE more jerks on Freedom because they have made themselves unwelcome on lower population servers, and moved so people would actually team with them. Hard to say, because not many people would honestly answer a survey to determine who is a jerk

I can't say for sure because I don't play there, but either of those things could have contributed to Freedom's reputation. (for the record, I don't play there due to lag issues, not because I have anything against the server)
That aside, there are great people on ALL the servers to team with, you just have to know how to find them reliably. You'll find that upgrading to a full account will make finding teams a lot easier because you can join global channels and send tells. You can find lists of global channels down in each server's section.
Welcome back to the game, I hope you decide to stay longer this time around.

Welcome back to the game. Since you mentioned trial accounts I'm gonna post the restrictions just in case you're not aware of all of them.
Restrictions
Trial Accounts cannot email other players
Trial Accounts may not level past 14
Trial Accounts can only have 50k influence
Trial Accounts may not join global channels
Trial Accounts can only speak in
/local
/hc (the Help channel)
/team
Trial Accounts cannot invite players to team
Trial Accounts may join teams, but not invite other players
Trial Accounts may not join SuperGroups.
Trial Accounts may not create Mission Architect arcs. They can not interface with the Architect Entertainment Stations. However, they can be invited onto a team that is running MA missions.
If you decide to upgrade to a full account I'd recommend checking into the global channels that are run by players on your server of choice. One nice thing about these channels is that it doesn't matter what server you are on at the time you can still talk to everyone who is a member of that channel. You can also be a member of several different channels at the same time.
And just to give a shameless plug, if you decide to play on Virtue, you should check and see if you can get invited to the Cape Radio global channel. They have a lot of members as well as their own web based radio station.

They hold their own events/parties and are generally a great bunch of guys and gals.
I reccomend Freedom server, which people from smaller servers will bash in just a moment.

Joining some global channels will make the game much more active and fun for you, regardless of what server you join. It will also expose you to more people and increase your odds of finding a good SG to join.
Hope you enjoy your stay!
Freedom and Virtue are the highest population servers. It will be easier to get Pick-Up Groups (PUGs), but you do have a higher chance of running into jerks since they can hide in the crowds more easily.
Other servers have lower populations, but it is easier to get to know folks in the community easier. I mainly hang out at Guardian, but have some characters on just about every server, including Freedom and Virtue. If I feel like teaming and nobody I know is on one of my other servers, I will log onto Freedom or Virtue and usually find a PUG fairly quickly.
Once you upgrade your account, learn to invite people to your own team. It becomes much easier to "find" a team when you are the leader.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

If you haven't joined a global channel, you're not really looking for team.

ClawsandEffect gets my pet theory: I don't know about "bashing" per se, but there are a higher number of jerkish players on Freedom. It's simply a side effect of it being a highly populated server rather than anything inherent to the server itself. More people = more jerks, it is unfortunately unavoidable. I'm sure the percentage of jerks is about the same on the lower population servers, but it seems to be more obvious on Freedom. Dec out.
You know, I was thinking about it. It's been months since I've met anyone that was a jerk besides Quills spammers, who I'm sure 50% are not actual jerks. Most people are nice and nearly that many know how to play the game.
I don't consider a person with a suggestive or lewd name to be a jerk, though maybe I should. I've only seen racists on Liberty, and only once in 18 months.
I will agree readily to this. There are jerks out there, but the cool people are far far in the majority. Jerks just stick out more in the memory (and make for better stories ).
