Need help with Ice/En build..

Hello, been away from the game for a bit, but getting back into it. Need some help with my Ice/Energy blaster. He used to be one of my pvp toons, has an early post-ED build.

I am not looking to pvp anytime soon. Just need an up to date build with IO's for both solo and team, just a general mission/TF stuff. Not looking to slot purples, but have 150-200 million to spend, and I have some hamis aswell.

Thanks in advance!

You might want to post a build. Otherwise just search for one if you don't want any personalization in it.

been searching the forums, wiki and even google...seems Ice/En isnt too popular, they were a dime a dozen back in the day, best toggle popper. I have redone my Ill/rad controler and Invul/fire tank, but cant seem to figure out what to do with the blaster. Most of the posts are all about capping S/L, but I cant find a reason for a build like that for pve team play. Guess my build will lean toward max damage, with secondary focus on Rech/Recovery.

Looking at it:

  • Ice - Take everything.
  • Energy - It depends. The melee and the boost range are the two reasons to take Energy. Your forced into your basic kb mitigation tool. Bone smasher is good through the game until you get to Total Focus. Which pretty much forces you into the blapper role. I find Conserve Power and Stun to be passable, and would say the same for Power Boost, but that might totally rock with Ice. Boost range with a snipe slotted for range is just stupid crazy. You can shoot further than you can see.
Energy has enough melee, and ice epic has a defense armor, so you can hit the S/L cap. That's why everyone talks about it, because you can. A freakish blaster that can just stand there and take it, and also with melee, and with this ice, hold people.

To find things with search, you need to search for words that only occur in each powerset. "bitter total" might do it. Somewhat...only 7 threads with ice/energy listed in the title using that.

I'd say read up on ice, read up on energy. Get mids out and play. Once you post a build, people will come out of the woodwork becuase, I think, it has some synergy possibilities. But, as before, no one will comment on what isn't there to comment on.

If you are using the nrg secondary, definitely take Power Boost. Increasing your own stuns is damn useful, but with Ice/ it should increase your holds as well as slows (I believe.) Too good to pass up.

I also agree with Postagulous about searching the forums. If you cant find the set combo you want, you will still probably be able to find 2 different builds using each set you desire. That gives you an idea on slotting and you can put them together on your own in mids with minimal tweaking. I have to do it with scrappers all the time >.

ok been mulling it over....think I will go the all too popular S/L cap route. Still cant find a good ice/en build around. I like power boost, dont care for extended range. Sort of tirn between aim and buildup, will prob take both. My blaster was Ice/En/Elec, but could change the epic. Am currently using fitness/leaping/steath/speed pools. Guess I could drop stealth for fighting, and turn this toon into a cross between a controler and scrapper. Bone smasher and Total Focus are must haves. If anyone cares to toss up a mids build just for a ref point, I would be greatful.

Thanks in advance, JV.

I don't have a build like that, so I'm throwing this stuff together.

note: TOTALLY IN THE WRONG ORDER, TOTALLY, TOTALLY

You can't get capped without ice epic, but with the ice/energy/elec you wanted here's going for cappy type range. I wouldn't do this one.

This next one is for recharge and just has the barest of bare slotting to get the recharge. There wern't enough slots for my rabid sloppiness so EMP is just plain not slotted. But you do get 71% rech with Hasten off, 141 with it on and it's down only 12 seconds between cycles. This is a mess though, and should be viewed as a rough dreaft of a thought.

Will give the specs a viewing, like I stated I have no issue changing my epic pool, so put together a build with ice epic pls!

This is what I'd go for if I wanted max damage for a medium budget.

Damage wise; you have 29.5% damage buff going at all times thanks to set bonuses and Assault, almost one SO's worth so not too bad. Boost Range and the enhancements in Frost Breath greatly increase it's area of effect making it easier to catch whole spawns in it resulting in higher total damage. Used in conjunction with Ice Storm you can crank out some serious AoE damage.

Survival; each of your ice blasts has a hold proc in them. Freeze Ray included, this means that generally if you run a chain of Freeze Ray > IBolt > IBlast > BIB against a tough target it should be held very reliably. After those four attacks you have a 60% chance that a boss is held, when you repeat the chain you have the boss held with nearly 100% certainty. You also have a self heal (although on long recharge) and Hibernate when things really go south.

I think it'd work fine.

Range Softcap
68% recharge
13% dam

All bonuses are kept when you exemp for the mid level TFs, that means you'll be softcapped for citadel/hess and up and keep your recharge bonuses and so on.

You can sub out stun with TF and put a set of mako's in there. Since you used to PvP, jousting should be no stranger to you and you can jump in and out to use it. But you do lose out on a bit of HP and recharge. I prefer that extra bit of recharge.

There are pros and cons for building towards ranged defense:

Pros:
-avoid a lot of mezzes since most tend to be ranged.
-cheaper to build, for now.
-You can always manipulate mob AI to use ranged attacks on you

Cons:
-Harder to build for other bonuses
-Certain mobs use aoes that don't have a range component that can still get you, like 5th column obersts and their rocket launchers and grenades. But for the most part you can avoid a lot of targeted AoEs because quite a few do have a ranged component to them (having s/l defense in this particular scenario is admittedly more advantageous than having ranged defense, but then again, the same argument can be made for a S/L build facing malta/carnies/rikti etc...)

Been looking over several builds, at this point going to move toward a general build with focus on recharge/recovery. Damage output will be a secondary focus. Slotting will lean toward making the holds and slows as effective as possible. So B-gaze(4)/Lockdown(2) in the Rays. Thanks for the advice.
