Hello everyone,

I have an Ice/Axe Tank and he's currently at lvl 44. I would like to take him to 50 but I require some assistance..

*SN*: is Ice/Axe still decent?

Anyway...Here is my build..(I just whipped this up and I have no idea when I really got these powers or at what levels I enhanced them and the IO levels are approximate.). I chose Energy as a APP but im willing to change it easily..

Not a lot of influence? Frankenslot

Energy Absorption: I slot for recharge, defense and end reduction-- in that order. And always 6-slot it as early as possible. Fire it off with 3 or more foes around you and it will always fill your end bar. Jump in a spawn and fire it off for that +def, with max recharge it will be back up before your end bar empties.

Hoarfrost: Recharge, Heal, end red, and off the wall.. Steadfast +3% def. 6 slot it early

Hibernation: good at a single slot unless you want set bonuses. It recharges for a tank in 2 mins with a 2 min cooldown period. So slot for bonuses or just a single Heal or End mod for flavor.

Swift-- 1 slot period
Combat Jumping-- slot for defense. 2 slots at least, more if you want set bonuses.

Armor toggles: they really are overslotted. Go with 3 each: 1 def/end IO and 2 def IO.

Focused Acc? such an end hog but of all tank primaries, Ice and WP both can easily handle the burden best so if ya want it go for it but...

Energy Epic with Conserve Power and PP is really almost useless for an Ice tank. Between EA and Hoarfrost and Hibernate-- endurance and HP wont be problems.

Go for set bonuses for defense as soon as possible. Prioritize Smashing/Lethal and Energy/Neg. Hasten is also helpful. Those are my thoughts looking at an Ice/Axe.

Thanks for the Advice! Yea, I know some of the items may be weirdly slotted..lol (the build is before when IO's were a luxury instead of the Standard)

Do you really think it needs an end redux? The way I figured, it's not used often enough to really drain my end..

Also, what APP would you suggest? I initially took Energy for FA in PvP (again, really old build lol)

Yeah Hoarfrost does need some end reduction in it. Key word: some.
Arctic Mastery is a good thematic choice. I've personally done Ice/Fire/Pyre, Ice/Elec/Earth, and Ice/Axe/none. Personally, I hate Shiver though, even on a blaster/ dominator/ what-have-you. My Ice/Axe, I took fighting pool instead of an epic. He is basically retired though as I have other tanks on that server but nothing is quite as satisfying as the crunch of that Axe.

EA needs max recharge. I would still go with less end mod. One application in the middle of a mob will put you at cap with the build I (will) post. 2nd app will completely drain all the rest of their endurance (except Ebs and Avs).

For melee damage sets, Smashing Haymaker and Kinetic Combat are a typed defense-based toon's best friends for softcapping defense. Smashing Haymaker is the more abundant thus less expensive but gives the lesser bonus. I suggest to frankenslot the other 2 slots with what is cheapest or whatever drops for you, looking for acc, recharge, end, damage (imo, roughly in that order).

Anyways, I hope you enjoy the toon.

Gammos, your first priority should be to get your S/L defense to the soft-cap, in your current build it's way below where it should be. The easiest and least expensive way to soft-cap is to pick up the Fighting Pool for Weave; it can be done without Weave, but you'll have to invest in some IO sets for the bonuses, and as Mr. Body suggests, Smashing Haymaker is a good, inexpensive choice.

I see several other slotting issues in your current build:

Your main defense toggles are underslotted; I think they both need 4 slots much more than CE and WI need two end red slots.

Also, Beheader, Whirling Axe, and Icicles are underslotted for end reduction. This is particulary a problem for Icicles, since it's such a high-end toggle.

If you decide not to get Weave, there are relatively inexpensive ways to get the set bonuses you need to soft-cap. Here's my Ice/Axe build, which soft-caps S/L/E/NE without CJ or Weave--it should be easier for you since you're planning to pick up CJ. I have Boxing & Tough as the last two picks, but you could of course get the Ice epic attacks instead. I do recommend Taunt, both as a useful tanking tool and as a good place to put inexpensive sets with defense bonuses.

Knight Court--A CoH Story Complete 2/3/2012

Yeah, the armor toggles I usually just 3 slot but with max level which puts them closer to the ED cap than the Gift of the Ancients can get you. Its a trade off that if you really want to use a lower than max set, then definitely put an extra slot if you have them.

And I saw the 2 slots in Wet Ice. I just overlooked mentioning it. And I was just looking at set bonuses instead of enh values in some powers.

Ok guys! I just made two different builds...This one is one with the APP...the next one is one with Weave and offers more defense...It may seem like a no-brainer on which one to choose but I wanted to post them both just in case...Thanks in advance!

In my haste I forgot to add an explanation lol.

In each of these builds, I took what I feel are the best components and meshed them with my build. I changed the IO's to smashing haymaker (I only crushing impact because I already had these IO's on him) and I changed up some slotting and IO choices for better enhancements and bonuses without giving up too much on the power's stats themselves.

The first altered build gives me defense in the 40's with E/NE in the 45's with the use of APP's.

The Second build chooses weave instead and doesn't get Icicles and Hasten until 47 and 49 respectively. This build gets my defenses in the 50's. It doesn't afford an APP but I don't mind that.

I think im gonna with the the build with the fighting pool, however it's still open to critique! Thanks again!

You could do both, if you have the funds (or you might do one and then work toward the other). Remember you get two builds now.

Depending on how much you want the ancillary attacks, the first build could be tweaked so it would reach the soft-cap for S/L/E/NE. Obviously, it will be a more offense-oriented build than the Fighting Pool build.

Here's what that would look like, if you're interested:

Knight Court--A CoH Story Complete 2/3/2012

Regarding the Fighting Pool build, well, it'll definitely be sturdier than the previous build, but IMO you're spending too many slots to get your defense higher than it needs to be. Remember, anything above 45% will not be used except in cases where your defense is being debuffed, so most of the time the extra defense will not help you. In addition, Ice has EA, which gives a significant defense boost when you're surrounded by foes. My recommendation is that Ice tanks aim for 45% or just above without EA, which leaves EA for those occasions when you need some additional defense.

And as I noted in an earlier post, your end reduction slotting is rather misdirected. The second end red slot in Wet Ice and Chilling Embrace just yields an additional .05 EPS; additional end reduction in a high-end toggle like Icicle would be much more effective. (As a matter of fact, Icicles at 80% end reduction is still more costly than *unslotted* WI and CE!) So those two additional slots could and should be used for something else.

Here's a summary of the changes I'd recommend. (Please note that slotting for less S/L/E/NE defense allows you to slot for other things, in this case, regen and F/C defense.)

1. Smashing Haymaker sets: instead of filling the last two slots with Focused Smite, use two slots of Pounding Slugfest instead (Acc/Dam, Dam/Rchg) for an 8% regen bonus.

2. Pull the second slot from Chilling Embrace and put it in Health so you can reach the ED cut-off for Heal.

3. Pull the second slot from Wet Ice and put it in Tough--you may have to shuffle slots a bit to do this. 5-slot Tough with Aegis for the F/C def bonus. (I normally don't advise more than 4 slots in a standard toggle, but the Aegis bonuses are very nice.)

4. You have Cleaving Blow in your AoEs for an additional E/NE bonus you don't need. I'd slot a mix of Scirocco's Dervish and Multi Strike instead--two Scirocco's give you a 10% regen bonus.

5. You also don't need the third set of Eradication to be well above the soft-cap, so consider slotting a Scirocco's Dervish and/or a Multi Strike set instead since they both have F/C bonuses. (The Scirocco's bonus is considerably better, but they are also quite a bit more expensive than Multi Strike.)

6. As I mentioned earlier, Icicles needs a lot of end reduction, and slotting it with a set of Multi Strikes would be a good choice for that reason. You can pull a slot from Hasten to use as a 6th slot.

I know you said you prefer using lower level IOs, but I also want to note that unless you're getting a bonus you don't want to lose while exemping, there's absolutely no reason not to use level 50 IOs if you need a higher enhancement level. (They're often easier to find than lower level IOs.)

You could do both, if you have the funds (or you might do one and then work toward the other). Remember you get two builds now.
Oh yea! Forgot about that...lol.

Man you guys are not helping me fight my indecisiveness haha..

@Finduilas:

Thats a great alteration you made! Before I was ok with not having an APP..but now I have to reconsider it again lol..this is gonna take some more time.

A couple questions:

Is there a need to go past the soft cap?

I notice there is less accuracy in your attacks, why is that?

My build uses less end than yours, will end drain really not be an issue with the way you slotted?

No, not really. As I mentioned before, it provides a bit of a cushion if there's a defense debuff, but it won't be used unless there is a debuff.

I chose to emphasize recharge over accuracy, for a couple of reasons:

1. You have the Kismet +Acc slotted, which will provide an additional 6% ToHit, and should more than compensate for the lost accuracy.
2. The builds don't have any global recharge bonuses, so I upped the recharge enhancement. If you prefer more accuracy or end reduction, you can get it easily enough by tweaking what enhancements are used.

Actually, for both builds my version uses slightly less endurance for the toggles and has slightly less recovery. The difference is very small, and I don't see that being a problem, especially for a build with a quick recharging recovery power.

Is the Kismet +Acc or +ToHit? I thought it was +Acc so I didn't worry too much about getting it. But if it's +ToHit I really need to find a spot for it.

I'd be scared to post my Ice/Axe build, I think it'd get laughed at. I've gone way out of my way to try and boost Ranged defense to help with the Fire/Psi holes so I think it's a little strange. Works well though. I keep thinking I should respec to move slots out of Tough since I never use it.

Even though it's called the "Kismet +Acc", but it's actually 6% ToHit. Confusing, I know, and I have no idea why the devs decided to name it that way.

Ok I see...cool. So if it were you, would you use weave or APP's? Because at the same time I don't know if im even gonna have room for those extra attacks in my chain necessarily.

Also, everytime I try to understand the difference between accuracy and to-hit I get a headache :/. Can you please explain to me in lamens terms what the difference is?

Hmm, I guess I can give it a shot.

All player characters have a BaseHitChance, or chance to hit even level foes, of 75%. The BaseHitChance for foes above or below even level are adjusted accordingly.

ToHit buffs (including the Kismet proc and Beginner's Luck buff) and debuffs are added or subtracted directly from the BaseHitChance, so, for example, the adjusted ToHit for a player with the Kismet proc running while fighting a even level foe is 81%; 75% + 6% = 81%. Any ToHit debuffs and foe Defense are subtracted from the adusted ToHit.

Accuracy buffs are applied after the ToHit is calculated, by multiplying rather than adding. Starting with a base accuracy of 1, if an attack has 33% accuracy enhancement, the accuracy bonus is 1.33, which is multiplied by the ToHit to give the final HitChance. Here's the effect of the Kismet proc on an attack with 1 Accuracy SO:

No Kismet proc: (75 + 0) x 1.33 = 99.75% HitChance
Kismet proc: (75 + 6) x 1.33 = 107.73 HitChance

Of course, that is a very simplified example, but it should give you a general idea of how it works.

One difference to keep in mind is that ToHit is always calculated globally, and Accuracy is calculated for each attack. And in general, a ToHit bonus will have a larger effect on final HitChance than an Accuracy bonus of the same size. Having ToHit bonuses (from the Kismet proc, Rage, Invincibility, etc.) won't replace the need for accuracy bonuses altogether, but it means that you don't have to depend entirely on accuracy enhancements to increase the HitChance of your attacks.

Ok, I think I understand. Whats the percentage out of? (base to-hit is 75% but out of what, 100%?)

Also, now that you cover soft cap without weave on your new build, if it was you would you take an APP?

Thanks so much for your help!

Like all percentages, it is out of 100%.

In my own Ice/Axe build, which is posted upthread, I took Boxing and Tough but not Weave. If you're able to soft-cap without Weave, you could easily take 2 APP attacks instead. That's one of the benefits of soft-capping without Weave, it frees up some power slots for other things you might want to take. *What* to take is purely personal preference, IMO.

Ok, I thought as much. I was just confused by when you talking about multiplyin accuracy and getting numbers over 100% etc.

I see...The only reason I was interested in the APP was really for Ice Storm, but if I don't have room for it then I may not take the set at all.

Once again thank you very much for your assistance and patience

I said that? O.o

I have no problem using lvl 50 normal IO's. if I 3-slot something I dont go past 40 because of ED, but if I am at least lvl47 and only have 2-slots, I always use 45-50 range normal IOs

Perhaps when I said I was dirt poor and didn't want expensive sets, you thought I meant high lvl IOs?
