Fire/Shield Build?

Hey folks, I'm not so much of an active poster on the forums here but I do a good deal of perusing through the threads and such. I was hoping to get some critiques on a possible build for my Fire/Shield brute that I am currently leveling. I like to have a build planned out before I reach 50 so I know what direction to take.

A few things to note: I realize that Fire/Shield is not quite as popular as SS/Shield for brutes, but I've played with SS enough and I'm a little bored of it. Not to mention I really dislike the Rage crash. Money is not a real issue, but I won't go so far as to buy purple sets or PvP IOs. I did my best to reach the soft caps except I fell a little short on AoE, but only by .3% so I'm not sure if that matters. Anyways, here's my build. Any suggestions for improvement are most certainly appreciated:

Wow I totally overlooked that one. That was a much simpler fix than I had expected, thanks Fury. I was also wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the powers I picked. I'm still not sure if Fire Sword is the way to go, as I've seen many people take Cremate instead. Cremate has a higher DPS, but also a higher end cost and recharge so I'm a little torn between the two (plus I like Fire Sword's animation better, but the numbers are more important). Taunt is another one I'm not so sure about. I guess it could come in handy at times but I don't really know if it's necessary. Any thoughts?

I really like cremate. The attack hits like a truck. I don't have a fire/shield brute (my fire/shield is a scrapper), but I assume that with a decent amount of fury, the results would be comparable. Fire sword is more of a stylish filler attack. Chaining scorch, cremate and incinerate makes for an endurance efficient and high dps chain that requires little recharge. It's why you see those attacks taken in a lot of builds.

As for taunt, I'd only take it if you wanted to tank LRSF or something similar. AAO is a significant taunt aura all by itself. In it's place, I'd take Grant Cover, which ups your defense debuff resistance, and provides a team friendly buff. You can also use it as a mule for a LoTG / recharge or two Gift of the Ancients if you're worried about endurance.

That's actually the route I was thinking about going with it. I don't know how I missed this before, but looking at your sig now I realize that I was using one of your fire/shield scrapper builds as a guideline for this. Thanks again for the input, I think I know exactly how I want to do this now.

As I'm getting this toon closer to lvl 50, I've been giving this build some more thought. Considering that this is a very defense-reliant build, I was thinking that I would benefit more from the Soul Mastery pool instead of going Mu Mastery as I had previously planned, since defense's only weakness is your foe's accuracy. I've made a few changes so I'm posting what I've come up with. If anyone sees anything that could be improved then please let me know, and if not then at least I've posted a decent build for others to use as well.

It all depends on what your focus is. Gloom + Incinerate is some pretty mad ST damage...but by the same token build up\fire sword circle\shield charge\electric fences\ball lightning is likely to wipe just about anything standing around you..especially if fury is high and AAO is saturated. With some primaries that rely on knock down, electric fences may be counter productive...if you're going with an defensive approach...however with fire melee, that's not really a problem, especially if you fire fences after shield charge.

Granted that it may be AoE over kill..I haven't gotten my fire\shield high enough to see just yet...but I do have other toons (SS|ELA) where I originally went with soul mastery, but I've since decided to go mu and become an AOE wrecking machine (and I'm quite happy with the change...even with fences -kb).

Telperion, thank you for your comments as well as sharing your modified build. I didn't realize this before, but looking at the numbers now I can see that adding those Membrane Exposures to Active Defense increases the defense debuff resistance. I didn't pay nearly as much attention to the slot levels as you did either. Yours will definitely be better for leveling and exemping down, I was just concerned about the end result. I made a couple tweaks to my build after seeing yours, nothing earth-shattering though so I won't take the time to post it unless anyone really wants it. The only real difference in our builds is that yours is a little better on recharge (122.5 - 118.8%) while mine is a little better on regen (272 - 242%).

In any case, these are looking to be some nasty brutes. Thanks everyone for the input on this thread. I just got my brute to 47 today, so let the slotting begin
