Little black boxes with 5830?

Using an HD 5830 ATI card, if I turn on ANY ambient occlusion at all, I get little black boxes around objects, especially those far from view. I need to keep it disabled at all times. I also get some rather funky effects in water.
Another strange thing is that whenever I update settings, even to ones that my computer can easily run, the game drops down to 1-2 FPS until I restart, then runs fine.
Anyone run into something similar or have an idea?

Little black boxes around objects? Do you by any chance have FSAA on? FSAA doesn't play nice with ATI cards, at least when Ambient Occlusion is on and the effect could be described as "little black boxes". If FSAA isn't on, then I'm at a loss, heh. And I may as well provide the obligatory "are your drivers up to date?" as well

On the ATI 5-series ambient occlusion doesn't play well together with anti-aliasing and/or depth-of-field. Any such combination creates those artefacts.
It requires, as far as I understand, ATI to fix it in their drivers.

It probably does. Another thing for the Television to add to the list of requests. They're going to start feeling harassed since they just put out new drivers for us just after i17's launch, hehe.

The artifacts did not occur on one of the beta-fglrx OpenGl 4.0 drivers, so a fix is somewhere upstream on ATi's side. No idea why the fix hasn't propagated down to a released driver. It might be due to similar issues causing hangups on Unigine's Heaven 2.1 benchmark.

Thats right. I do have FSAA on. I'll have to try without it. Unfortunately, I can't even update the drivers. If I use the newest ATI drivers, my graphics card doesn't get detected at all and I can't run any games with it.
I had to keep downgrading until I got to the 10.2 drivers. They were the only ones that would work.

First: go back to 10.1. 10.2 and 10.3 have issues with Ultra Mode.

Second: if you can't install 10.4 on the HD 5830, FILE A BUG REPORT: http://www.amd.com/us/CatalystCrewSurvey

Also: 10.5 is out now. http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Je Saist, would there be any issue with using those drivers direct from AMD/ATI or should I wait for them to become available on the Sapphire site?

As far as I'm aware, Sapphire (and for that matter every other desktop ATi vendor) just winds up mirroring the reference release.

It's generally only in the mobile sector where the OEM Vendor's driver is drastically different from the reference driver.

Makes sense. Just thought I'd double-check, heh. Thanks
