Updater not applying patch

This might be a few days off, but I haven't logged into game in a couple of days either.

Went to log in, and noticed that the updater downloaded a patch... no big deal, it was tiny.

When it went to the second step (applying the patch), it was stuck on the "infinite" time to apply the patch... moving the top updater screen showed me the error message that had popped up.

(I'm running Win7 on a laptop. Norton is installed, and has never had any issues with City before, and I'm running the game as an Admin on the system. If more info is needed I shall get it when needed)

The Error message is as follows:

Quote:
failed to rename C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe to C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.old
Some help please?

Sure ... come to the forums instead of your tech savvy friends. I see how you are.

Easy fix. Copy the CoH Updater to your desktop. Don't create a shortcut, just copy and paste. Run that copy. Easy peasy.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Is there a file called Cityofheroes.old already sitting in that directory? If so, delete it and try again. If not, just delete the cityofheroes.exe and let it download again.

Tried both... nothing yet. Still the same error message...

Well, not exactally sure what happened...

I finally got tired of it all and went to go to uninstall it, only to have it say that something (I think Norton, which was not running at the time) was using the files. This had me very confused, so I restarted my computer, deleted the temp file, the patch file, and for good measure (and on TJs recommendation), the checksum file. Re-copy and pasted the uploader to the desktop, again for good mesasure, and started it up.

It went through the checksum, then proceeded to *fix* over half the files in the game, taking close to an hour... though, when it was done, it worked.

Still not sure what happened, but happy it's working now.

I had (more like have, still) the issue you are having. Mine is a PC, again, windows 7. TJ helped me out the last time (copy to the desktop and load from there), but this time when I tried it it didn't work at all. I got the same set of error messages that I'd gotten before.

Tech Support told me to do something about sliding down some security scale, but for the life of me I can't find it within the system. To me, it's like City doesn't recognize that I'm the admin of the system and allow it to make modifications to the location the program is stored.

Re-installing now, as I couldn't get anything to work. I can't keep doing this every time there's a new patch to the game, it's too frustrating and time consuming.
