Anaku, I think you need to be a little more specific about when / how you get lag spikes.
I have a secondary computer, which is able to run Ultra mode somewhat limited but still fairly stable. Your computer has better specs and all your settings are very low.
So I would expect that you should be able to do better than that.
Ever see those documentaries about reef fish, where all the fish, large and small, line up and permit a cleaner wrasse to pick off their parasites?
Issue 17 has made things choppy for me when moving. I haven't tried turning down all the settings, mainly because I'm afraid I'd never remember what they all were if it didn't help.
I thought I'd try posting some info here and see if the resident wrasses can help me. Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Are you by any chance using Microsoft Security Essentials?
Others have reported it can cause this problem. The cure is to allow CoH (or something similar). |
Like I stated before, never an issue prior to this update.
Thanks for the reply/suggestion though.
Characters/Toons
General advice.
Update your video and sound drivers to the newest available.
If using an ATI video card, be sure to disable ATI Hotkey Poller, as listed higher up.
Your specific problems might look alike, but can be very different in cause, so I recommend starting new threads with relevant information.
That will properly be the best way to get help.
I'm not using Microsoft Security Essentials, but I do have Windows Live Essentials installed (which can be quickly uninstalled).
Like I stated before, never an issue prior to this update. Thanks for the reply/suggestion though. |
And the fact that there wasn't an issue before only proves that there wasn't an issue before. If you haven't tried the suggestion, I would suggest that you try it.
There are a lot of things going on in I17 and its subsequent updates. Sometimes stuff that played together nice in the past will not do so now. People often turn off their anti-virus software while gaming, to gain just that little bit of extra cpu and memory. If you are not doing anything else except running the game, you should be fairly safe turning off the security package while gaming.

Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm ...
Please download and run CoH Helper and paste the output into a new post in this thread.
This will give us specific information about your computer and your in-game settings. That should give us enough information to begin trying to offer suggestions to improve your performance. |

Sailboat, your video and sound drivers are rather out of date. I'd suggest updating them. Also, it looks like you are on wireless. There have been reports of folks on wireless connections having various issues. That might be a contributing factor. Using a wired connection if possible might help.
Soul of Fuji, you also need to update your drivers. You can find Intel drivers here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2576&lang=eng They look to be the most recent I can find for you. If they won't install you may need to follow the instructions found here: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022355.htm You can also try the -useTexEnvCombine switch and see if that helps.
1. Right click on your CoH shortcut
2. Click on Properties
3. Click on Shortcut tab at top
4. Go to Target window which should show: "C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
5. After the last " press space once
6. Enter the following code exactly: -useTexEnvCombine
7. Click on Compatibility tab and make sure the Run as Administrator checkbox is selected
8. Click Apply and then Ok
French Kiss, My first suggestion as always is to update your drivers. I'd also recommend a memeory upgrade if you can swing it. 1GB is workable but more will help your performance. Beyond that, since you seem to be having input lag, I'd suggest disabling the ATI Hotkey Poller service. That might fix your chat issue.
elvnsword09, boy am I sounding like a broken record. Update your drivers. You're also behind on your Windows patching as you're only on SP2. Go get SP3 and get up to date. I'll also note that your hard drive is rather low on free space. I'd suggest freeing up some space. As your free space declines, so will your Windows performance which will affect CoH as well. Probably wouldn't hurt to defragment the drive after you delete or offload some files. Try all that and see if it doesn't help.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
Hi everyone...I hate to suggest it, but I found a very strong possible short-term solution that nobody else has mentioned. It isn't a fix, so much as it is a likely temporary work around. See my post at http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...7&goto=newpost for details about my discovery....and also note that it may not be a "FIX ALL" for EVERYBODY'S problem, but if I am right, and this fixes the lag for everyone, then we have located the cause for the problems.
Try this Troubleshooting step. Before starting the game...go to the device manager and simply DISABLE your sound card. Don't uninstall it...or mute it...just disable it. Obviously your sound won't work, but run the game and see if the lag continues.
We have 2 totally different computers...both running Windows 7 Ultimate...aside from that there is not one similarity. I have the benifit of working for an ISP...and I get a free connection (but I still pay for cable internet on the side so I have 2 connections to test with.) Because of that, I know for certain it has nothing to do with ISP connections or ports. Video drivers don't seem to make a bit of difference for the lag...as anyone can see your character still runs smoothly...it's all the data coming from the server that seems to be the problem. I began to notice that there was a sound loop playing at full volume on both of our computers at the loading screen between zones...it sounds like that of a car driving, or the train sound effect. Regardless...when you shift focus out of the game...the sound stops...but then the game INSTANTLY runs better. (Try it yourself if you prefer waiting to disable your sound card...run the game in windowed mode...sit and watch the pedestrians and cars keep lagging...then click on the windows taskbar to shift focus out of the game window, and keep watching. The lag stops, and the only thing you did is shift out the focus which consequently turns off the sound from the game.)
Yes, it's crummy...and yes, we shouldn't have to turn of our sound entirely just to enjoy the game. We know the problem is related to I17....and more than likely something with how the new issue processes sound...or possibly a simple sound glitch...possibly related to that one sound that always plays between loading zones...WHO KNOWS. To be perfectly honest, I was about to scream my head off to phone support and demand my money back because the game was unplayable on 2 separate accounts...then this fix for me made the game playable...so we just listen to music from our ipod to distract us from the CoH silence, lol.
I hope this helps...hit me back if it does, I'd love to know who this helps, and who it doesn't!
Good luck everyone!!

What? Is not possible. Windows Live Essentials is a group of MS software, including Windows Live Messenger, WL Movie Maker, photo gallery, parental controls and other stuff. MS Security Essentials has no relation to Windows Live.

One of the latest possible solutions for input lag if you have Asus hardware: If you have nvidia graphics, and/or do not have MS Security Essentials - look for and disable ATK Keyboard Services using msconfig. This solution was discovered by and posted elsewhere by jackal913.

Windows Live Essentials IS Microsoft Security Essentials. They've changed the name of it to Microsoft Security Essentials (probably because a lot of people, myself included, won't use Windows Live anything).
And the fact that there wasn't an issue before only proves that there wasn't an issue before. If you haven't tried the suggestion, I would suggest that you try it. Alas, that didn't fix the problem either. Oh well
Edit: Whoops just read the following posts, uninstalling Live Essentials was still worth a try ; regardless, all of these suggestions are not working for me (even the sound card disable trick)

OK, so I'm on my way to a resolution (finally).
I found the answer in this post:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...=219525&page=2
The solution was posted by British Battler which he received from NCSOFT support.
I can play the game now with no mouse or keyboard delay.
I'm not too keen on having all of my services disabled, so I'm going to do step by step trial and error to discover what process is actually causing this problem.
I'll try to report my findings.
Thanks to all who responded to my inquiries.

Definitely let us know. It might prove useful for other folks. Also, I've seen the Television urging folks with problems to go try the Test Server. I gather there's a patch there that may fix some of these type issues. You might try that with everything on and see what you get. If it works, then a fix is on the way, if not, then I'm sure they'd like to know so they can work on it more.

The sound driver(s) I downloaded from here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/...&GetDown=false
Both downloads required setup and install shield and ran for a while and I rebooted.
After rebooting, I NOW see a strange icon in my taskbar. The tooltip calls it BDARemote.
Worried because that sounded like a remote-access hack, I hit ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the Task Manager. Task Manager comes up, but I can ONLY see the "tasks" now, not the processes. I thought I'd look for a suspicious-looking process with a name like BDARemote and try to remnove it from startup (I'd have to fiddle to figure out how to do even that) biut since I can no longer see the processes, I can't.
I can right-click the BDARemote icon and I get one option: exit.
Did I do something bad? What is this thing, why do I have it, why does the Task Manager behave differently now? Should I remove it? How can I?
Thanks, and sorry to be a pain, I did try to get the drivers all by myself without hand-holding.

Regarding BDARemote, it seems to be harmless, at least according to this page BDARemote - WikiAnswers.
