Howdy people,
This my first foray into doing a tank and i thought that i would try something a bit different from everybody else.I thought i would throw up this build onto the forums for a bit of feedback, and as she is only lvl 5 there's plenty of time to modify it, also do'nt take too much notice of the lvls that i selected powers at it's just my first draft.

Thanks for taking pity on the poor old guys' eyes. Now, as for possible ways to improve:

1) I would postpone Boxing for a while. If you're not getting Tough until much later in the build, you might as well put off a single-slotted Boxing.

2) In conjunction with 1), there are a number of powers I'd suggest trying to move up in the list, including Wet Ice, Chilling Embrace, and possibly super jump. I would say move Boxing back to level 16, Chilling Embrace up to level 6, and Wet Ice to level 12.

3) Icicles should be moved back after Stamina. It's an end hog, and you won't be running it much for that reason between 18 and 22 anyways, when you can get SOs in Stamina.

4) As to that, I would put Glacial Armor at level 18, and push back Icicles to level 22 or 24, moving the level 22 or 24 power back to 28.

5) Hoarfrost needs to be slotted with Recharge and Heals, much more so than it is in your build. I suggest 5-slotting it with Doctored Wounds. The Steadfast Protection +Def proc is also a bit of a waste there, and could probably go somewhere better. Although, there, it will be of use when exemping. But still, it's only going to be active all the time if you're using Hoarfrost a lot.

6) Energy Absorption: Slot this with IOs to ED-cap Recharge, Defense, and EndMod. Don't slot procs in it unless you have satisfied the previous three areas. You want this up often, to be draining a lot of End, and giving you a lot of Defense at the same time.

7) Since your secondary has no way of dealing with troublesome minions and lieutenants without killing them, I would highly suggest you try to get one of the Ancillary Power Pool holds in your build. Something like Char can help a lot in the later levels.

8) Combat Jumping is vastly overslotted, unless you really want those set bonuses. The Def that CJ provides is very little, and slotting gets you very little in return.

Steadfast +def is a global bonus. It doesn't care what power it's in or when that power is used. If it's a level 30 IO in a level 47 power, you'll have the extra defense all the way to level 27.

Thankyou for the great reply Aett, i have tried to incorporate many of your ideas in to this new build by selecting powers at a certain time instead of imediately when they are available, i have also managed to get char in there aswell by losing permafrost. Hopefully this is a bit better than my initial build.

Unfortunately, most of the sets you are using (Mako's Bite, Obliteration, Scirocco's) give primarily positional set bonuses, and Ice is a typed defense set. That means you are using far more slots (and more influence) than you need to get to the soft-cap.

In addition, you have two powers slotted with Obliteration, which has almost no end reduction, and one of them is Icicles, which is very end costly. You could get the same S/L bonus as both the Oblit sets by using one 4-slot set of Kinetic Combat, or 2 4-slot sets of Smashing Haymaker, an SH would be a fraction of the cost of the Oblits.

I'd recommend that you replace at least one set of the Oblits with Eradication, which will give you a E/NE bonus and allow you to drop the Mako's from Incinerate. Since it only takes 3 Erad slots to get the bonus, you can frankenslot with the remaining slots to get end reduction and whatever else you need.

Here are my recommendations for changes; I used a Kinetic Combat set for the S/L defense, but you can save a lot of influence by using two Smashing Haymaker sets instead. I usually don't recommend Scirocco's sets for typed defense builds, but this combo has a lot of AoEs and I didn't need them all to get sufficient E/NE defense. Also note that I changed the slotting of Energy Absorption; with all the LotG and Scirocco's you were well over the "rule of 5" on a couple of bonuses and the Red Fortunes will be a lot cheaper than the LotGs.

A lot of what Finduilas says is good advice. You need to be looking for S/L and E/N defense bonus as well as +hp. Here is my "everyman" build that most folks should be able to build and play 99% of the game with. It is unusual in that it doesn't use Hibernate (I found I never used it), and does not have taunt with the two aggro auras in ice/. It is soft-capped and then some to S/L and E/N defense and gets you a little +hp and +rech for the "Everyman" price. Hope it helps a little.

Thanks again guys for the great reply's i'm glad i posted this up as it has helped me massively with trying to get this build sorted out. I have tried out a couple of things to hopefully make it a bit more rounded, in time i will slot out the oblits in FSC and the Touch of deaths in GFS for the purples. This will free me up a couple of slots to put another Lotg in GA & the Kismet +6% acc in CJ, also i would be slotting Kinetics in scorch to put me back over the cap for S/L def. Also on a side note is it necesary to get over 50% def on a tank or is 45% more than enough?

Don't have time to review your build tonight, but I did want to answer this question. Your current build is soft-capped WITHOUT EA. Which means anytime EA is up--which should be often--with 1 foe in melee range you're going to be up near 50% defense anyway. So no, IMO you don't need to get your defense any higher than it is. Ice Armor has around 50% def debuff resistance, which will also help.

Actually its 34.6% def debuff resistance which is one of the lowest for pure def sets.

It is 51.9%. Wet Ice also contains some, and it's something like 17.3% in each of the three armor toggles. 17.3 for one, 34.6 for two, and 51.9 for three.
