Dopplegangers...

Am I reading this right?

The "new" enemies being faced by players was revealed as Doppelgangers, an enemy type made possible by the groundwork laid via Mission Architect

The designers talked with vigor about how the Doppelgangers can have powers that are a twisted reflection of the player, that they can add certain constant abilities to differentiate them, and how much they change the overall tone of the mission. Mirroring players allows the mission to change depending on the team that runs it, further broadening the experience. They also made a point of highlighting how an unconnected change led to a new shot of content, because it was only with Mission Architect that it became possible to give enemies a full set of templated powers.

If I'm understanding that right, you'll be able to create "Doppleganger" NPCs that change powers based on who is fighting them?

If so, that's really cool!

theres no way to create doppelgangers from the players side, they are automatically generated in the new mish arcs and parts of the new posi tf's but they will have the same costume as the player who enters the mish and similar powersets (not exact powers)

Yes it does reminds me of the Nemesis system in Champions Online.

"Twisted Reflections", L25-29 in Ouroboros
"Looking Through The Glass", L25-29 in Ouroboros

The 2nd arc is the better of the two IMO, with a really nice cutscene at the end.

Also both have a new feature where the contact talks to you during the missions. It's kinda cool.

Edit: Got some cut scene screenshots on the FF site:
SPOILER ALERT

There are two new villain-side arcs that feature this too. They are awesome!

I have no idea what it is about I justed wanted to add another dooooom post as a trap to make you reply. I call it fanboy bait. You fell for it like Chewbacca fell for the meat set out by Ewoks. Booyahhhh.

I actually hope it comes out soon cuz I am quite bored.

I'm having fun documenting the new contact pages. Holy dialogue trees! It took me about 6 or 7 hours to document just Field Agent Keith Nance.

On a side note, the ambient sounds they've added are pretty good. I was getting really angry with someone here in my neighborhood who kept honking their horn off and on for about five hours yesterday. It wasn't until I'd already gotten up and looked out the window for the culprit a couple of times and was about ready to go outside the hunt them down that I put two and two together. I finally realized I was only hearing the horn when I was standing next to Nance in Talos - and next to the street with the cars that now honk as they drive by you...

It's sort of interesting to fight against yourself in a mission, too.

Taking on 8 Karl Rove Men was one of the hardest things I've had to do in-game. To make things worse, /traps gets smoke grenade and targetting drone when you fight them.

This sounds like fun. I keep trying to figure out the opposite of my main toons....and unlike some people I never really built opposites of my heros in red side. I can't wait to check this out.

I did that when AE was released. Pretty simple to make a "mirror you" in there.

Dopplegangers are neat and all, but not something I'd deem as "new and exciting".

its not just the doppelgangers that make the new arcs awesome, the mishs they have are really cool, plus you get to see some enemies that havent been in the game yet (*cough* ajax and protean *cough*) and with each arc you get multiple choices and stuff (should i save the clone or should i not?, should i help the clone?, ect)

This has potential. It'll be nice to see content that isn't "defeat all".

They are probably separate systems, but they tie together nicely (Dopplegangers & Branching).

Done well, branching content is the way to go in the future for MMOs. If you have a different experience each time you play through in terms of story and your choices having an impact on your future lends itself to the long term over repeatable raiding content.

I'm kind of surprised they haven't tried this out with AE yet. It would be relatively straightforward to create branching arcs in there.

Personally I was a little let down to see this is only within a hand full of arcs and not some more wide reaching addition to the game.

Hopefully we will see it added to more content later.

(I hope someone sees what I did there.)
You didn't really give us a choice by pointing it out, did you?

Branching was added to the game in Issue 12. If you do the Origins of Power arc, the contact whose origin matches your own has a different dialog for you. However, it hasn't been leveraged until now. I'm guessing that the coding that allowed it to happen was incorporated into the content-writer's version of their Mission Architect so that Dr. Aeon can go hog-wild incorporating branching dialing and branching events into the new arcs he wrote without having to get the programmers to code it for him.

That's right, branching *events*. In one of the new arcs, you make certain decisions which cause certain signature NPCs to show up to fight you or not depending on what you chose.

I'm sure that this new tech will eventually make its way to the player's MA.

On a separate note: All four new contacts and the refurbished Posi TFs include dopplegangers -- clones, extra-dimensional, shapeshifters, magical constructs, etc.... I'm sure being able to put one into a MA arc will become available some day.

WRT: Kill-alls: Not one of the missions in either of Posi's new TFs is a kill-all. (At least, in Closed Beta it wasn't... things can change.)
