Children Found Dead in Gemini Park

Two children were found dead in Galaxy City's Gemini Park late last night by shop keeper Barry Marlow. At time of going to press, police had no comment on the deaths.

Marlow gave the following statement: "They were so young. No more than 7. The monsters who did this deserve the death penalty!"

"Well, I heard it was Hellions sacrificing to a demon so they could fight off the Circle."
"Sure sounds like those magic-types are up to something."
"Yeah, they deserve all they get. Killin' kids, it's not on."

Otrera approached Gemini park some time in the small hours of the morning, the sky just beginning to stain with the dawn. She found the site still marked off with police tape, but other wise deserted. Surveying the area, Otrera moved to the middle of taped off area and knelt, pressing one hand to the earth.

There was energy here, messy, noisy... magic. Possibly, wasn't her area but the suit was good enough to pick that much up, and it was unlikely to be a technological source. It needed a magic user to really tell.

The suit reached out to the PPD intranet, time to see what they had found and who else was interested.

((Hope that's a suitable statement of intent.))

The PPD desk Sergeant looked up , and was not impressed by the figure before her , her lips started to form a snide comment , when she noticed the Hero licence ..giving the figure a second look, she still failed to be impressed .. a ordinary looking guy in a old worn jacket ...” yes Sir ..” she managed with a degree of civility ...

Unspoken , the figure placed a information request form ..scanning the form she took in the name Nathan Vicks ..gee not even a suitable name ..some hero ...then she noticed the detail ..Gemini Park ..two victims ..this crime she knew .. “yesss ..Room three , the files will be in there , you can read and make notes , but no photos. Ok ? “

Nathan nodded and walked to the indicated door ....

(( PMs have been dispatched to those investigating. ))

(( For general information, I'll be dropping information anyone might come across in this thread and others. Anyone wishing to investigate specific things will get PM'd the information, or they can talk to me in-game. As a first for me, I'm going to try to terminate this plot line with a MA mission, which I'd better start working on now, because my ability to work with MA is not as hot as some folks around here. Hopefully, by the time we get to the finale I'll have something interesting to give closure. ))

Nathan Vicks sat in the cheap plastic chair the PPD provided , the worn surface of the table held a new crisp PPD report .. Vicks opened the folder and carefully read from page one to its end , his eyes never leaving the pages... he closed the folder and his eyes , sitting silent for a few minutes .

With slow movements he pulled a brand new notepad from his jacket , and ,with a similarly pristine pencil , reopened the folder . Again from page one he interrogated the PPD report , this time he made notes , the only sound of pen on paper as another hour passed ..

Vick next turned to a fresh sheet in the note book and began to shape his thoughts ...

1.Where the bodies hidden in the bush , or just dumped ..
2.clothing ..parent of kids choice of style , quality /age of clothing
3.content of pocket ..typical kids , or anything odd.
4.Teeth ..signs of regular dental checks
5.the Symbol..what sort of paint , what level of skill needed to reproduce the symbol , would it have been painted on a resisting person .

Vicks , left the room and made his way to the toilet , to freshen up ..the atmosphere in the station worried him , he lingered at the main desk , slowly filling a contact form , requesting to be updated if the PPD uncovered any new facts ..he dragged this out waiting for the shift to change ..

Using a talent for shadowing Vicks let the off duty cops lead him to their local drinking hole,
hoping alcohol might let slip a few more facts .., an hours of this used up Vicks slim funds

..next would be the park , reconnaissance of the ground and maybe a chat to the locals.. Gemini Park would have its collection of homeless and street people ...

Otrera sat at her work desk and frowned a little, the police report was little more than peliminary but confirmed the use of magic she had detected and the symbols were at least an obvious thing to reserch next, see if they tied it to any particular group.

Her frown deeped breifly, magic could be troublesome, she would have to be extra careful.

The search had also turned up a name and hero id number, one Nathan Vicks. She had never heard of him but given the cities population of registered heroes she also wasn't supprised. Shee started a search on him in the FBSA data base, who knew, he could already be tied to the magic world, that would be useful.

Closing down the software that connected to her suit she switched back to her more mundane work, she would let the search run it course before she made her next move.

(( I'm posting this here since other heroes hanging about in Galaxy may start to notice a few things as well. Call it atmosphere. ))

Galaxy City's cops are a little more subdued than might normally be expected at the moment. There's an undercurrent of anger there as well. Anyone who is a known magic user may find they get short shrift from the local cops. There's a lot of muttering about fiendish magical rituals and something needing to be done about it. Conversations tend to drift to the deaths of the two children and people start to get angry and then silent.

The population around Gemini Park won't talk to strangers about the crime, not with anyone watching anyway. People are nervous and angry. No one actually saw the bodies, or the ritual, or anyone dumping bodies, or anything incriminating at all, but they all know that magicians killed two children and left the bodies in their park. Anyone who uses magic is going to be looked on with considerable suspiscion. Shopkeepers may even kick them out.

The only people around the area who seem relatively unaffected by the whole deal are a group of men working on the old home depot building beside the park. They aren't locals and are only there 9 to 5. If asked, they are refitting the upper floors for a Miss Barrington, but won't go into any more detail than that.

Hellion activity around the park is, if anything, a little lower than usual.

Drade came into the area of the park, glancing about he noted the fact that even with the dawn just broken the bird seem not to sing their normal song. The park seem very quiet, ahead he saw the tape, his eyes glowed a little as he came towards it.

"hmm.. so this is what I felt then.." he muttered to himself as he slowly walked in deeper.

Suddenly he ducked behind the trees and bushes to his left, just as a figure appeared in the taped of area ahead of him. Calming his breathing and lowering the glow that came off his gear and gloves he hoped he could watch from where he was and not be noticed.

It was rare for something to draw Ataraxis out of Skyway City, for the time being he saw cleaning up that town to be his top priority, but there was just something unsettling about the way the articles were written in the Protector on this murder. Something hysterical about it, it just didn't add up to him. And so he was drawn to the Galaxy PPD. He would get to the crime scene later, the police would have probably already moved the bodies out of there anyway. Although Galaxy was where he had started up, he wasn't anywhere near as familiar with these cops as he was with those in Skyway. It was all very alien to him. Approaching the information desk he paused for a second, then with some measure of regret he showed his hero license.

"I've come to investigate the murder of the two children."

"That's...just not right." Ataraxis said putting down the file with a sigh. The assumption of the coroner is virtually unfounded...there doesn't seem to have been any proper investigation made into this case... "Well, first things first..." Ataraxis got to his feet and returned to the file to it's cabinet. Despite the fact that the precinct seemed overall suspicious and uncooperative, he wasn't about to allow that get in the way of finding the culprits of these murders. [Ataraxis intends to go and visit the coroner if he's in the station, if he isn't, he's going to ask who are the chief investigating officers and where he can find them]

Ellie crouched down a lay a large bouquet of flowers, accompanied by a soft toy, by the pile of similar items, then looked up at the police cordon around the crimescene.

A crowd of citizens had gathered here, each one showing barely repressed signs of their anger what what happened here. A clenched fist, muted and curt conversation. Several cast angry glances in Ellie's direction, looking pointedly at the feline ears and tail, and muttering "Damned supers..."

Ellie shuddered, the mood in the air grating on her senses, and walked over to one of the cops guarding the scene. Flashing her hero ID at the man, she asked him if it was OK to take a look at the scene.

"Sure, but you won't find squat. We've already been over the area with a fine tooth comb, and one of them new superdogs from the canine unit. Found nada."

"Still, you never know, right?"

The cop nodded, and lifted the tape for Ellie to slip under. A moment later, she was crouching over the precise spot the kids were found, examing it as closely as her unique senses allowed.

A few minutes later, Ellie returned to the cop, her expression not happy. "Too much corruption of the scene... All I got was a vague shape in the grass..."

The cop nodded. "Well, if you could make a report, Miss. Anything might help, y'know?"

Ellie was about to reply, with a clumb of earth struck her in the shoulder, and an angry voice called out. "What the hell are YOU doing here, freak! I remember you! You're that damned kid killer from a few years ago!"

Ellie froze, and slowly turned to face the angry citizen. Several more were forming up behind him. The cop with her looked surprised, then looked at Ellie uncertainly, his hand moving unconciously to his sidearm.

An angry expression flitted across Ellie's face, quickly replaced with a look of sadness. A second later, light flared from her eyes, and she took to the skies; calls of "Kid killer!" echoing in her ears as she fled.

Edwina had come to exactly the same conclusion as Ataraxis, she had seen magical death autopsy reports before and they atleast got into the possibility of what kind of magic could have killed the victims and a lot greater detail of the injuries...simply labelling the cause of death as 'magical' was something a rookie coroner would do.

She wasn't officially part of the police investigation but then she had a worrying feeling the investigation had already been compromised. She begun looking through the employee database to bring up anything she could on the Coroner, there may be a link there...[Edwina would probably bump into Ataraxis since they're both investigating the same thing...have them both turn up outside the Coroners house? She'll run the symbol through the database as well once she gets it from Fea, interesting that there's two actual cops working on it...though Otrera appears to be a beat cop and Edwina is part of the Anti-meta unit]

Completely unperturbed, Ataraxis turned and walked away from the unhelpful officer who was just trying to intimidate him. These guys were wasting his time. He quickly chased down the assistant coroner, and found equal co-operation.

"Are you familiar with a second opinion sir?" He stepped in towards him. "As I'm a certified doctor, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to allow to make my own examination of the victims?" He brandished his hero license.

As he stared into the eyes of the young assistant coroner, he couldn't help but be bothered by this black cloud overhanging the mind of all those around him. He certainly wasn't one for outright reading others' minds, that was a privacy he wouldn't dare to invade, but he couldn't help feeling this psychic aura. He focused his senses on it greater, to try and notice if there was anything unnatural about it.

Edwina now had the evidence on what the symbols actually were...this case just even weirder...

She had found out who the coroner was and decided enough was enough, she had to pay him a visit, unfortunately this meant she missed Ataraxis grilling the assistant coroner. Why had this guy, who normally done such a great job in his reports, a guy who had been with the department for years...completely screw up this one report.

She took her coat, slid out of her chair and headed off to the home address. Knocking on the door when she did finally arrive and awaiting a response...

Otrera looked at the print out of the symbol again, she had passed it on to as many high level magic users as she could find, it would take time for them to get back to her.

She decided to contact this Nathan Vicks, see what he had found. The data from the FBSA had yielded enough information to get a contact number after a little digging. couldn't hurt to have some one else on side.

The message was short to the point of abruptness.

"Also investigating the Gemini Park incident, need to talk. Time and place your choosing. - Otrera"

Paragon Times, Sunday Edition, March 28th, 2010
Guns Don’t Kill People
An editorial feature by Alex Carpenter.

Is Paragon City becoming the gun-crime capital of America? Recent reports suggest the answer is yes. In the kind of activities we normally associate with the neighbourhoods of New York or Los Angeles, gangs are reportedly resorting to drive-by shootings. The use of both conventional and high-tech weapons is on the increase as street gangs and criminals alike resort to ever more extreme measure in their quest for power and desire to suppress those attempting to curb their excesses.

This reporter has spoken to police in a number of precincts who have expressed concern over the rise in gun crime, particularly in the use of explosives and high-tech weapons systems. One officer, who wished to remain unidentified, said, “It’s getting like we’re going to need power armour and blasters just to do street patrols.”

Where are these weapons coming from? No one is willing to say. There are rumours of weapons caches with company names on being confiscated in several districts of the city. This reporter has been unable to find anyone willing to talk on record about the finds. However, with companies such as Longstaff WarTech, Huntington Technologies and Crey Corp. producing high-tech equipment and weapons in and around the city, one can but wonder whether some of their produce is making its way, into nefarious hands.

(( People reading this article may feel a stronger than normal urge to do something about this. Or not. ))
By mid-afternoon, people have begun gathering outside Crey, Longstaff and Huntington facilities. At first it's in two's and threes, then larger crowds develop.

Crey deploys tactical troops around their facilities, but there are no incidents.

((Slight concern at the whole police hero/info sharing, that went on at the statue.

The police can't share the files with heroes, particularly as said heroes could be a suspect.

Plus any investigation would become suspect, I mean the villain is revealed to be the nemises to Mighty Man, but Mighty Man was given police information all along. Any defence lawyer worth more than a dollar an hour, would get them off scot free at the trial.))

...she's liasing with the heroes who are doing their own investigation...corallating anything she can find with her own findings. She's not sharing files, she's not once handed over any piece of paper, the casework or anything else, she's shared some info which the heroes could quite easily find out on their own. Heck one of them begun looking into the coroners report before Edwina did.

Paragon Heroes are law enforcement, they're not police but they are involved in their work, otherwise why the hell would detectives give out police band radios...so they can distract the heroes while they deal with the nitty gritty stuff?

Next time I'll just shut up shall I and not say anything if Edwina finds something out...))

((will do, won't happen again, right time to read the PM))

Edwina grinned as she looked over the report, "HA in you face medication...I knew not taking you for a while would pay off..." pointing at two little bottles of pills (one labelled buspirone and one labelled Amitriptyline) accusingly. Though she probably shouldn't have them displayed on her desk considering that her psych evaluation was coming up...she looked around to make sure nobody was looking and quickly pushed them into the draw, buried under some paperwork.

"So we've got something...I have no idea what that something is or even where to start looking but it's definitely something...and..."

She looked at the second report, "...damn it," she cursed loudly, "the bimbo had a point...I don't like this...not one bit, not going to admit she might have been right and that there's more than one ritual site going on...

"Alright this is getting waaay beyond me now, I need to pass this to someone who has more experience in this field...nobody in the department is even remotely good at this kind of magical mumbo jumbo, mystical murders I can deal with, mystical murders relating to a possible large conspiracy within the upper echelons of the media trying to besmirch the good name of heroes that goes above my level...."

Edwina began quietly rambling to herself, "There's got to be someone else doing an investigating job in the department...I can't deal with this, I mean if I go after whoever is causing this, they'll come after the PPD next, then what'll I do, I know it's got to be someone powerful, possibly someone too powerful and well protected for me to go after...still perhaps if I hand this off to someone else then they'll be able to go after them...I can't hand it to the heroes...they can't be trusted...they could already be under whoever is doing this control...I could give it to Fea but then what if she's just pretending to be my friend so she can ruin the casework all along...she could be feeding me false information and I wouldn't even know it!"

Edwina slowly pushed the folder with all her work in it into a draw, "I'll see if anyone else in the department has been looking into this on their own...yes...see who else could use this...I can trust the PPD...I can't trust heroes, not now..."
