Oil Slick Arrow - Bind for targeting it?

Hello all,

Well, got my TA/A to level 27 and loving OSA. It's just a fun power and the damage is icing.

I'm wondering if any TA/* defender can offer any advice for targeting the Oil Slick easily? I find myself shooting it and then fumbling to try to find it so I can ignite it with my tech origin power/taser.

Any other tips for TA/A in general would be appreciated...

Including a good attack chain?

Thanks much for any advice!

I'm not sure. I have the luxury of being a Fire/TA Controller, so I just about can't avoid setting it off. However, I believe it is simply another enemy on the battlefield. Therefore, you should be able to custom target it:

/bind shift+o target_custom_next "Oil Slick"

Replace shift+o with whatever key combination you prefer, and make sure the name of the slick on the battlefield is actually "Oil Slick". I never think about it or look that close. Anyway, that *ought* to do it. Its at least worth a try.

Lewis, thanks very much for taking the time to respond. I'll definitely give that a try.

I've never thought about trying a fire/TA... seeing as how Fire is my favorite type of controller, you'd think I'd give this a shot!

And maybe I will! LOL

Don't you have Blazing Arrow to light it?

Another way is macro /T "$$targetname Oil Slick".

I do macros rather than binds from having alts. It saves having to remember and I also do another macro to autotarget villains such as Malta Sappers or DE Guardians and use Ice Arrow. Sometimes taking a baddie out of a fight asap does help.

Hi Dawn,

Yes, I do have have Blazing Arrow... but I was under the impression that if I shot that at a mob, it wouldn't ignite the actual oil slick... that I had to attack the oil slick to ignite it?

And if that's the case, I'd just as soon use Blazing Arrow on a bad guy.

I agree about the macro... I plan on creating one to place it near the oil slick attack.

Okay... follow-up question:

So I create a macro, using Lewis's code...and it targets perfectly.

However, when I go to use my Technology's origin power (Taser Dart), it doesn't ignite the oil slick.

It did previously... if I clicked on the Oil Slick and then hit it with the Taser. now, I get a message:

"You defeated the Oil Slick."

but no flames...and the foes aren't ignited.

Very confusing to me.

Weird. I have no idea why that is happening.

I will say that I always thought that the energy powers have only a percent chance to ignite it. Or maybe this a bug. Try repeating my method 10 times and see if it fails all 10 times. Then try manual targeting 10 times. Then try New Dawn's way and try 10 times. It might build a picture of what is going on. I'd just play normal missions and log my results as I go, to avoid tedium.

The same problem that everyone is having with that. The leathal kills the Oil Slick before the fire/nrg/etc get's a chance to hit it 1st. It's been a known problem from way back.

But... if you use say.. Exploding on a mob while OS is in that mob... it might work. I usually use Lightning ball with OS in the mob and it works about 95% of the time.

Exploding is smash and leathal damage so it will ont ignite OSA.

I knew there was a bug with OSA but this make a lot of sense. My DP/TA has trouble lighting OSA I assume b/c the fire damage with incendiary rounds is a small percent of the damage. My sonic/TA lights it pretty reliably with howl since the energy and smashing damage is equal.

That makes no sense . Oil Slick Target has 10000% resistance to everything bar Fire and Energy. Far as I knew the Burst into Flames works when the object is killed, it's just impossible to kill with a non-Fire/Energy source.

The non-spawning of the Fire Patch was alledgly something to do with server timings according to old posts I've read.

Thank you all for your contributions.

Now, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it... but I was testing this right after I respecced outside Galaxy City's town hall. I found some low Hellions (level 2 and such) and tried it. Perhaps the low level mobs went down so fast due to the fire burning them, that it didn't register over their heads? I just thought I'd see the patch burning, nevertheless.

I'll try it on higher mobs and report back, to see if that is pertinent.

That is the way it is supposed to work but as wonkie as that power is i put it in the 'anythings possible' catagory.

I'm about to hit OSA level on my AR/TA so I'll do a little testing with flamethrower which I think is pure fire damage. Then again maybe my /sonic is just luckier with the server tics

I have noticed that the OSA target sometime disappears only a few seconds after it spawns and I am unable to target it again. Other times the target seems to stay longer.

The chance to light also seems to go way down, if at all, if I'm out of mission in a zone much lower than my level also.

I guess there is a good reason the Devs have not been able to fix it since it was released.

Sorry to trudge this up again...

Just want to double-check: Is it a known issue that the OSA doesn't ignite 100% of the time? If so, then I can live with that and won't get frustrated when it happens.

I'm knew to TA/A so I thank you for your patience!

Very well known, it's been broken since fall of 2005 when it was added to the game.

Check out the "Current Defender Issues" thread for any bugs with powers.

Thanks for responding, Trickshooter. I'll just now accept that if it ignites, I should consider myself fortunate.

I created a macro button to target the oil slick, then launch my mystic charm (origin attack) at it. Of course I have to double press the button for the macro. Still works nicely.

I did see one fire troller who was a moron. He kept igniting my oil slick... by putting Bonfire RIGHT in the center of the oil slick. Thus ensuring nothing stayed in it. Ever.

I find oil slick lights 100% of the time for indoor missions. Outdoor missions it usually lights too. But outside of a mission it sometimes doesn't. Especially if the zone is populated at the moment.

I know I am pulling this thread out from the dead but I needed this info but I wanted to add something to it.

I use

/Macro LOSA "$$targetname Oil Slick$$powexec_name Taser Dart"

You have to click it twice, once to target the Slick, the next to fire your Taser Dart (or the other one from the Mutant set) but it does work.
