How to tell if a serial code has been used without activating?

I have a serial code for a "Friend's Pass to 14 day trial" that came with my CoV DVD Edition of the game. I've had it for quite a few years and I'm not sure if it was ever used. I'd like to give it to my nephew but I wouldn't want him to be disappointed if it's no good. How can I tell? I'm afraid that if I punch the serial code in at home it will activate immediately.

I don't think you can find out without actually trying it (for security reasons). What you can do if it does not work is use the "Refer a friend" program (See this link), assuming you have free invites of course

But referring a friend has the bonus of giving you a free month if your friend subscribes for a month. A much better deal.

If it doesn't work, you could try asking an SG mate or friend if they have a spare. I know I've got a few (12+ of them) that I've picked up

I love when companies toss around phrases like "for security reasons". If someone types in a code, what danger would there be to the company if a screen popped up to tell them "This trial account has not yet started. Activate?". Then I could click "No" and know that the code is good. Simple.

My intent was to give my nephew the trial, and then pay for his subscription if he liked it, but I wanted something physical to put in the card. They make things unnecessarily too complicated. Looks like he's getting a GameStop gift card again. Sigh.

You could pick up a game card for him. It wouldn't cost that much and would let him play for a month.

Do you live in the US? Go to Target, etc., (at one point, even 7/11 had them, but don't know if they still do) and get a Game Card. They're $20, open an account (so you don't need to buy an actual box code), and come with both 30 days of play time and 30 days of an unlimited-use flight pack.
