Are PBAoE buffs/auras spherical? (shadow fall + hover ?)

I've got a Archery/Dark Miasma corruptor I'm playing right now, designed as an evil fairy. Anyway, since I'm planning to run swift and hover most of the time, I was wondering if Shadow Fall and similar auras still work properly if I'm over my allies heads. Obviously, I'd need to be low enough, but I was a little worried by the very planar graphics most of these seem to have.

tl;dr; are PBAOE auras spherical?

I was under the impression that some were ellipsoid, not sure.

This. Many PBAoEs are not nearly as tall as they are wide. Unfortunately you've just gotta get a feel for it. At least for Shadowfall you can see whether or not its reaching your allies because they'll have the little black cloud-ring by their feet.

I'm pretty sure they are exactly as tall as they are wide. The fact that they appear otherwise is an illusion caused by two factors. First they are spherical, that means the further you are vertically the closer you have to be horizontally. Secondly, the powers emanate from a single point not from the edge of the character box.

The animations for many are ellipsoid, but I think the effects are spherical.

Dispersion Bubble and Sonic Dispersion being the most obvious two. i'm pretty confident non-cone AoE effects in the game come in two flavors: cylinders and spheres, with all buff AoE's that i know of being listed as spheres. Of course the graphical effects can be any shape, thus the ellipsoid shape of the graphics for the Dispersion twins. (Fraternal, not identical.)

Most radial effects in this game are spherical. It's easy to measure whether something is inside a sphere because you can just look at the distance between center points. Is object A within X feet of object B? Ok, then it's in the area of effect.

The only radial powers I can think of offhand that don't affect a sphere are some of the patch powers. Ice Slick, Oil Slick, Quicksand, and Glue Arrow are definitely not as tall as they are wide. I don't know whether they effect an elipsoid or actually a cylinder area. You can float safely above these powers, but if you fly with your feet close to the ground (~5 feet off the ground or less) they will affect you.

Steamy Mist and its variants have doubly misleading graphics. They are not only typically very "tall" (IMO probably spherical), their actual radius is much bigger than the graphic implies. The graphic shows an area of approx. 25 feet (about as wide as Arctic Air or Dispersion Bubble) when the actual radius is a huge 60 feet.

I suspect that what the code actually does with these sort of powers is check for range as if it were a regular sphere power but then ignore anyone who is not within a few feet of the ground. This is purely a guess, but it would be the simplest way to code it.

40ft, actually.

Oops. Yep, that.
