PhysX Issue
I hope that someone more knowledgeable than I can provide more details... but I think the basics of it is that the game's current implementation of PhysX only supports the old Aegia cards, not the PhysX that's included with Nvidea now-a-days...
Search yields a number of results with detailed replies.

At the moment I believe Grim to be correct and the games Physx support only includes the original Aegia implementation right now.
I believe they are still working on the new Nvidia designs, but no news as to how long that will take.
Hope that helps.

When PhysX support was added to this game way back when Issue 6/City of Villains came out, it was so new that what we have integrated into the game could be considered a Beta version and was only designed to work with the old Ageia based PhysX card. The game wouldn't even recognize later drivers that Ageia put out that improved CPU emulation, likely because of the early nature of the PhysX API the game used. Sometimes being the first on the block with the latest gadget isn't always a good thing.
So when nVidia bought up Ageia and wrote a CUDA PhysX emulator for their Dx10 class cards, we were out of luck. The game simply doesn't know how to talk to those drivers, just like it didn't know how to talk to the last ones from Ageia.
Simply bump the Particle Physics Quality up to the max if you have a good multicore CPU. The game will still use the PhysX CPU emulation to fling around packing peanuts, shell casings and exploding boxes.

OK I just got a new PNY GeForce GTS 250 1 Gig XLR8 performance edition.
Problem is, the PhysX *IS* installed and globally turned on outside the game, BUT the option to turn on PhysX within the game is still greyed out. Any ideas? |
Why can’t I select the “Enable AGEIA PhysX support” option in City of Heroes using my GeForce 8 series or higher video card?
City of Heroes only offers PhysX support for the AGEIA PhysX PPU cards. The PhysX offered on Nvidia graphics cards is through software emulation which City of Heroes does not support. If you have additional questions, please contact support. |
WHY am I sadly NOT surprised?
The game does a LOUSY job of supporting ATI cards. I got tired of black water and other ugly effects on my 4650. I solve that by going out and buying the chipset/GPU THEY RECOMMEND, only to find out the advanced feature they hype for the game is NOT supported by the GPU that THEY RECOMMEND!
There are no words to desribe how assinine this is.
You might want to save your ranting for after Ultra Mode comes out, because it fixes most (if not all) of the issues with ATI.
Also, I am amused to note that you quoted something about nVidia cards in order to rant about ATI cards.

The nVidia recommended video card had to do with hardware to support OpenGL 2.0 (essentially a Dx9c card) which was added at the same time as the pre-nVidia PhysX, way back in Issue 6/City of Villains which was the last major graphic revamp of the rendering engine back in 2006.

I got sick of black water with my old ATI Radion 4650, I wanted to be fully GR compatible, and the card is PhysX ready.

The rest of the Advanced Graphics settings are good. Is there another setting I need to tweak first or something from Aegia(sp?) that I need to DL to suppliment the NVidea PhysX drivers?
