Do fire swords only shriek when you draw them?

From fiddling with Fire Sword and Fire Sword Circle, it appears that the fire swords only shriek when you draw them. Does Greater Fire Sword follow this same pattern? I hate the shriek, but if it's only on redraw, I'm actually considering an all swords Fire/Shield concept build running Greater Fire Sword -> Fire Sword -> Fire Sword Circle -> Fire Sword. I think it would look great, and be devastating AoE at a definite cost in single target DPS and endurance use. If GFS shrieks even when just attacking with an already drawn fire sword, then I'll probably just avoid the swords entirely, and "settle" for Incinerate -> Scorch -> Cremate -> Scorch. I'll probably settle for that anyway, since it's difficult for me to choose concept over raw power. But hey, shouldn't I have at least ONE build that has a concept other than "as much power as I can get, any way I can get it"?

I really hate the shriek too. I don't remember GFS having the shriek but I've respec'ed out of that a long time ago.

Origenal GFS doesnt if already drawn, but with alt smaller sword (which can be used instead of the big one with alt animations) doesnt at all- only the "whoosh." Depends how much you want the biggy. (IIRC)

hmmmm....

Good thing I don't play with any sound on

GFS is a different sword than FS and FSC so the sound might be there even running the all sword chain.

Wait a minute here...
So I could change the size of the swords?
Then could I use the bigger sword on FS and FSC?

Yeah, you can change sword sizes at the tailor. I'm planning on all larges if that'll only make noise on redraw. I should try all smalls too. But the idea is to give myself one consistent fire sword that stays out for the entire battle.

Add firey blades to the list of things that should show up in Broadsword's customization options.

Or perhaps an elemental damage enhancement?

Hmm..

geezzzz... I should really visit that place more often. I think I only got one character with more than 2 costume slots

And the idea of having FSC in an ST attack chain just makes me sad...

Oh come on now. Werner and Iggy posting about costumes and the sound of their fire swords?

I'm showing it at just over 3/4 as much DPS as the top fire chain. That's pretty bad. On the other hand, 3/4 * 280 = 210 DPS, which would still be my top DPSing scrapper by a significant margin. How's THAT for sad? *chuckle*

But yeah, it's hard to settle for 210 DPS when you could be doing 280 DPS with no other compromise but concept. Mind you, I probably wouldn't use the top chain, and I'd probably be more in the 250-260 DPS range. But it's also tempting to go pure damage for once in my life, and it sounds like I could avoid the shriek in the top chain by going with the small sword in GFS.

It doesn't fail. For DPS, it's right behind the top chain, GFS>Incinerate>Cremate. Takes slightly more recharge, is slightly more endurance efficient. It's an excellent chain if you prefer Fire Sword to Cremate.

Werner,

I'm actually looking forward to what you think of fire/shield once you get it leveled and built. I have a number of scrappers, but only one other apart from my fire/shield that is 50 and IO'ed out (spines/regen/body), so I don't have the breadth of experience in comparing one top end build to another top end build. It would be interesting to get your take (and Umbral's too since I think he's leveling one too) of how a fire/shield compares to other scrapper builds.

Weird, I guess I've tuned the shriek out entirely. I kinda remember hearing it in the back of my mind now that you mention it, but I never really overtly noticed it. I can say the same thing for Sonic Resonance, Sonic Blast, Hasten and Super Speed. Those drive other people batty as well, but they only barely register with me mentally. I hear them fine, I just dont process them.

Lucky me!

I'll be happy to report back, but I'm not sure how applicable any comparison I make will be. My other three purpled-out Scrappers are all built for survivability over damage output. My Fire/Shield will likely either be an all swords AoE concept build, or it's going to be a pure damage DPS/AoE hybrid, with survivability taking a back seat (though it won't be a squishy). So I can pretty much predict what any comparison will look like, and I don't even have a build worked out yet. Heck, I can't even guarantee I'll even IO it out, though that's currently the plan.

I seem to tune out most of the game noises pretty well. The two that are just nails on chalkboard for me are the "still recharging" noise and the shriek of the fire swords. I'm currently dealing with BOTH of those on my Fire/Shield. Good thing I love the character otherwise.

Oh, and the Targeting Drone drove me completely insane on my AR/Dev Blaster back when the noise was constant. That was so bad that I played without sound until I figured out how to turn it off.

I never noticed the two other swords' shrieks, but the GFS had some non-swordish sound effect that annoyed me enough to respec out of it. Maybe something like the "eerie" sound that the Nemesis lolly has...

Well, as long as we're posting about costumes and sound effects, here's Turiel standing in front of his "Boss Farm". This is why I'm considering the all swords route (thank you, Ninja Running):

Hmmm, looks like I should crank up the brightness on the shield one more level...

(You wouldn't know it, but I'm actually a costume *****. I spend way too much time in Icon, and my non-demon characters have and use all five costume slots, and I want more.)

This is City of Heroes/Villains. The one game where your costume is as much (if not more) identifying than your name/class. I spent the better part of three hours in character creation once, just to find a good costume. I had the name, but the threads just weren't coming out.
