Now this is cool!

I was reading this little tidbit about naming policies in another MMO. This is just plain awesome.

It is kinda cool... I dunno, I wouldn't wanna run into another toon of my naming... but for CO, nice.

It'd be cool except I don't think most people would want to see a toon running around with their namesake

/gignore @username is the best feature of this game. It's also probably the least used feature.

I wouldn't like it.

Can you imagine the sheer number of "Pandora" and "Mystic" and "Logan" characters running around? Or the frustration of having to type "Gunpowder and Lead@Steele Magnolia" and keeping that straight from every other "Gunpowder and Lead" toon? Or the confusion when you have two "Mystic" on the same team?

Good for CO. I hope it works out for them.

The double-names for characters is also a feature of Star Trek Online. I havent played CO but I did a trial for STO and the double names are annoying as hell. It displays on everything; in the chat, in your character info, over your head. You can't just be "Orion" because you are Orion@Something, which I really think detracts from the immersion of an RPG (not that I am an RP'er, just voicing a common gripe). I would hate double names in CoH. It's a good thing it's not run by Cryptic anymore

I play CO, and it is a very cool feature. I enjoy both games they are different and similar. The naming feature allows you to not have to come up with different spellings and using of numbers ectra because someone snaked your name. The double name doesn't display in CO like it did in the STO beta at least not on my toons.

Eh. Unimpressive. Just because names aren't available why should they be forced to be avail? It's called your original name wasn't as unique as you thought. Truth.

@Possible

A couple of this, a couple of that.

I don't know Possible, some players spend lots of time on names and concepts of a character only to discover that the name they wanted to choose was taken. As I personally have been in game for a very long time I have almost all my names which I want on every server. So for me thats not an issue, However as new players join the game they have a much harder time getting names that in some varation havent been taken and are sometimes forced to settle with something different.

Champions Online came up with a system that allows the new player to have the name and create the hero they originally wanted to. How can that be considered a bad thing. It works very well in Champions.

Positron floated this idea in the big "Wouldn't it be great if..." panel at Hero Con last fall. It was soundly booed.

I think if it had been in the game from the beginning then we would be used to the idea and it wouldn't be a big deal. At this point I think I prefer what we have now. At almost six years in, we're now seeing some REALLY creative names appearing.

That same panel included a poll about whether it was time for another database purge to free up names that were taken but weren't being used. Positron didn't seem in favor of that because he had gotten emails from people who lost characters in the previous purge who said they would never come back now. The general reaction in the room was "The hell with people who aren't playing the game." I suppose I agree with the room on that one too.
