((Hey, Todd. Take as much time as you need , bud.))

The sun was high and warm as Will pedalled quickly in among the trees. He made the mountain bike flow along the well-groomed piece of singletrack, pumping smoothly through the bumps and corners until he broke out into a clearing. He brought the bike to a stop and wiped the sweat from his brow.
A small electronic beep sounded from his pocket. He reached in, grabbed his phone, and glanced at the screen. His heart fluttered. Will quickly played the message back, then lended back with a thoughtful look on his face.
"Hmmm...the Infernal Affairs' boys are having a talk with Mags. That can't be good." he said out loud.
He looked at his watch, shook his head, grabbed his waterbottle and took a slug. Will smiled suddenly and replayed the message.
"Yup, I thought I heard that."
He put the waterbottle back and started pedalling for home. He had a little more than two hours to dinner with Shan and a very important meeting.

Late Thursday Afternoon

Will walked through the bright halls of the Police Headquarters carrying the warm bags of Chinese takeout. He silently whistled as he went. He stopped in front of a door labelled "Commander S. Callahan" and lightly knocked.
"It's open." the occupant shouted from the other side.
He knocked again.
"Oh, for the love of Pete! Just come in already!" the voice spoke.
He knocked again.
"That's it! This better be important or I'm going to break my foot off in somebody's ..." She opened the door furiously.
"Hi, Bosslady! Gotcha dinner!" Will said brightly and then maneouvered himself into the office.
"You didn't have to do that. We were going to go out for something."
Will arched an eyebrow.
"Down, boy. I'm working here." she laughed as she closed the door.
Will started taking out the containers of food and placing them on her desk. A slim arm pulled him around and a warm pair of lips kissed him. He returned it just as forcefully.
"Ummm...Shan...we're in your office."
"Yeah, right." She sat down and stared at the containers of food. She quickly put them back into their bags.
"Sorry, Will, but there is something we have to do before we eat."
He arched his eyebrow again.
"Stop that! Now follow me."
Shannon lead him through the building to an office near the roof. The door was labelled "Chief Conrad Bochco". Shan entered quickly. He followed.
"Sergeant McCauley, good to see you again, young man."
"Ummm...Hello, Chief Bochco." Will stammered and then shot Shan an questioning glance.
"Don't blame Commander Callahan. I told her to do this. Now...ATTENTION!"
Will snapped straight.
"Sergeant William McCauley, you are now hearby promoted to Lieutenant. Effective immediately."
Will straggled a groan.
"Son, I know you turned down a promotion a few months ago but I'm afraid you can't turn down this one."
"Why is that, sir?"
"Why, Lt. McCauley. Why, because I said so." the Chief said smiling, "You will be just fine, Will. The promotion is a reward for all your hard work with the Blue Shield Initiative. No command responsibilities will be added to your duties at this time."
He reached out and shook Will's hand.
"Congratulations, son. You earned it."
Shan reached over and shook Will's hand as well.
"Congratulations, Will."
"Now, get out of my office, you two."
They walked slowly back to her office to their quickly cooling food.
"I'm sorry, Will. I know you didn't want it but you do deserve it. I, um...think you would be a good officer."
"I don't know about that, Shan."
"I do. I see it all the time." she closed the door to her office behind them, "Now, come here, you big lug."
Shan pulled Will close and went to kiss him.

A evil laugh sounded loudly in each of their heads.
"So easy....YOU'RE MINE!"

((This picks up from the mousedroid's post from April 30th))

“...but I haven't got all day so just shut up and listen.”

As the Chief of the Paragon City Police Department, Conrad Bochco knew exactly who was here to see him, and why. Commander Shannon Callahan, leader in the field of the Blue Shield team, the force's answer to meta-human heroes. He noted the fastidiously tidy uniform, and couldn't help but smile. He always enjoyed the first few months after a big promotion, when officers were still 'feeling' things out, and always trying to impress the boss, even if they were here to yell at him.

"Callahan, I'm glad you're here. Saves me from having to send someone to bring you in." Chief Bochco gestured to the seat across the desk from where he sat, and waited patiently for her to get seated before continuing. “For months now I've had a group of scientists, doctors, and internal affairs working on Hiller's case. For some time we've known there was something wrong with him. At first we thought it was just fits of rage, an aftereffect of the Supes he took while undercover, but not long ago one of the boys in the lab determined that Hiller's outbursts were being triggered.”

“Triggered!? What the hell are you talking about Chief? How the hell could you not tell...” she was practically yelling at the man who ran the whole damned department. From the grim look on his face it was not something he appreciated, or tolerated. So she settled back into her chair and waited for him to continue.

Leaning back in his chair he met the diminutive officer's gaze. "Finished? Good. We've finally gotten a lead as to who may be poisoning Officer Hiller. The lab techs have identified the drug that's been causing his outbursts. It's called Overdryve, and it's the latest, greatest, designer drug to come out of southeast Asia. It's a little like PCP on Crack for most people, but the drug is more effective on Superadyne users. Rage plus Supes kills the user. Overdryve plus Supes, however, creates a whole new kind of monster. Total loss of control."

She spoke softly for a change, mulling this new information over, "Tsoo?"

The chief nodded, "Yes, that was our assumption given the origin of the drug. I've got a civilian contractor looking into it for us." He held up his hand to cut short the objection Shannon was ready to launch. "I don't want to hear it Callahan. Mason is one of our best informants and she has solid contacts in the drug trade. Plus, she's met Officer Hiller in the past. Friends, you could say. She said she 'owes him one'."

Shannon 'Shenaniguns' Callahan thought about it for a moment. The Chief certainly wasn't in the mood for ******** today, so she kept it simple. "Orders, sir?"

The Chief leaned forward, clasping his hands together and resting them on the desk. "You'll meet with Miss Mason. She should have the information we need by now. She has my complete support in this, and she will have yours as well." He looked to the woman sitting across from her, waiting for a response. She nodded her head, and he continued, "You need to find the people providing the drug. They should be able to tell you which son of a ***** traitor's been poisoning my officer."

He rose out of his chair, and Shannon followed his lead. "I'll get the team together sir."

As she turned to leave, the Chief spoke once more. "Since Officer Hiller will have to sit this one out for obvious reasons, I'd suggest grabbing someone to help out." Picking up a file folder off his desk, he handed it to her. "None of these are PPD, but they are reliable and recommended by Blue Shield himself. We've been lucky so far Callahan. Hiller has only hit villain groups during his outbursts, but that luck could change. Don't screw this up or we'll all be in for a world of hurt."

"Thank you sir, we'll take care of it." Folder in hand she walked out of the Chief's office, flipping through its contents as she headed for the elevator at the end of the corridor: write-ups on a few of the city's up-and-coming heroes.

She could only hope the chief's trust wasn't misplaced. Mags might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he more than made up for it when **** hit the fan. A machine gun toting nurse? A university professor who controls earth? A mystic mercenary? Actual ninjas from ancient Japan?

"Where do they find these whack jobs," she mumbled to herself as she stepped into the waiting elevator and headed back to work.

((My apologies for taking liberties with your character mouse, although I tried to keep it as unobtrusive as possible. As you can see, Mags won't be available for this arc, and possibly not for the next arc, so I will have to bring someone else. With Shannon as our leader in the field, I figured it was only fair that she pick Mag's (temporary?) replacement.

Suzy Homemaker – 33 – Emp/AR Defender (probably the best fit conceptually)
Planet Smasher – 41 – Earth/Thermal Controller (easy going golden age hero)
Midnight Might – 37 – Elec/Dark Scrapper (dark avenger type seeking redemption)
Warrior Widow – 28 – Ninja/TA Mastermind (limited english, so no talking, just kicking and stabbing)

So, yeah, hopefully the arc works and you guys enjoy it. Let me know who to bring, or if you want some more info on any of them.))

((That played very Shannon-like, SF, so I'm good with it. As for Mags replacement, I'm somewhat torn, but if Planet Smasher is a hero Shannon would have heard of, that's who I'm gonna go with. Second choice would be Midnight Might, and third is Suzy. No way Shannon's bringing a ninja on this op after what Bochco told her about the origin point of the drug.))

Will concentrated and the rifle reassembled, floating easily down into its cradle. He blew out slowly and rubbed his eyes. His head didn't have the static it had on Thursday night but it didn't feel completely right either. The memories of that night were hazy and indistinct but they left a bad taste. The fallout of that night was still hitting them.
The team was split up right now, trying to deal with many problems. Drew was still on detached duty to north Alabama, helping the victims of the tornados that hit there. Magnet was still doing field tests of the K-9 Unit's new armor system. He had not seen Mags since the incident, he was being run through a battery of tests.
And Shannon.
Will sighed.
Shan had been busy as well. He had rarely saw her since the incident. Between her meetings, command responsibilities and return of her folks, she hasn't had a spare moment to see him. He knew she had a meeting with the Chief but its outcome, he didn't know. He just knew she wasn't happy with the outcome.
Of course, it wasn't like he wasn't busy himself. The SWAT teams had increased their training schedule, trying to get more officers out in the field and he was be counted on to help.
Will took a drink of water. Hopefully, the team could regroup tonight and get back on track.
Hopefully.

((There's a post in the announcements section saying the forums will be down from about 1-7 pm ET today. Doesn't say if it'll affect the servers though. I'm in tonight barring any unforeseen snafu on NCSOFT's part.

ETA: OK, it looks like the gaming servers are scheduled to be down until 7 PM ET. I guess we'll see what happens at that point.))

((I kept trying every few minutes until about 7:30. I gave up and went to watch last night's Daily Show. I came back around 8:00 to find the servers and forums still down so I watched the UStream broadcast for a bit. I don't know what time it was that I checked again (maybe around 8:40ish) but I was able to get on so I hopped over to Union and created a bunch of name-holder toons. I figured Blue Shield was a no-go, so I just logged off after that.))

Hi guys,

Sorry about last night. As you may have heard there was a weird power surge at HQ last night and it knocked all the servers and phones offline, among other things. We even lost cell phone reception. After the incident with that mind controller last week, the whole place went on immediate lockdown.

Nothing the IT guys tried could restore any of the systems, but everything came back online a couple hours later as if nothing had happened. Still no word on what caused it, but it gives me a really uneasy feeling. Call it woman's intuition, but it feels like it was an attack to me.

Since all I did last night was sit on my butt in the dark, I volunteered for extra duty tonight - I'm gonna join some of the flatfoots on patrol from around 7-10 PM, just to make sure everything is kosher. It'll probably be a boring night of busting Hellions and stopping the Outcasts from hassling little old ladies, but I could use a boring night after some of the crap we've been through.

Speaking of which, could one of you shoot me a report on your activities last night so I can add it to the official Blue Shield log?

Thanks,

Shannon

((Rats! I forgot about the invasion tonight. I got a work "shindig" tonight. For a thank you for our hard work in fourth quarter, the bosses of my small company are taking us to a dinner and a movie "Fast Five", so I won't be on tonight. I hope you guys suit up and kick some for the Blue Shield. Have fun.))

((If no one can make it, or you want to do it with non-BS characters, it's cool. I'm gonna check it out, but I have to mow the lawn after work so I'm not sure if I'll be on right at 7 o'clock or not. Also, if there are any badges to be earned from it, I'll probably switch to my redside badger.

Congrats on the bonus shindig tonight, BD! The company I started with used to do stuff like that but after multiple aquisitions, the company I work for now is too large to care about the little engineering cogs like me who keep the business running. But at least they pay me gobs of money.

Also, glad to hear things are getting back to normal for you, Todd. Sounds like Mama Nature has a real gudge against the south these days - first killer tornadoes in Alabama and now a 100-year flood on the lower Mississippi.))

Hello everyone.

I regret that I have been unable to join you as you have dealt with recent issues. It is my hope that with power restored to about nintey-two percent of the northern Alabama region, I will soon be able to return to Paragon City and resume my duties on the team.

My biggest worry at the moment is the Browns Ferry nuclear facility. It sustained damage from a powerful tornado which caused it to shutdown. The facility has remained stable thus far. The plan from the Tennessee Valley Authority is to complete repairs to the damaged areas of the facility and bring it fully online in the next few days. I and the Awakened Division detachment sent here have been asked to remain during that time as a precaution. If all goes well, the power distribution infrastructure will be once again at one hundred percent capacity.

I must admit that some of the devastation that I have seen here is quite remarkable. We have been able to rescue many of the residents of the various cities and counties here. I am grateful that we were able to help so many, but, I am also saddened by the many deaths that have resulted from the storm. What I have seen here serves as a stark reminder of our role as protectors. It renews my resolve to be a part of the Blue Shield and to help those who need it most.

I hope that you all remain well and I look forward to seeing you all upon my return.

Sincerely,
Drew Hill

Plenty of room for more boys (and gals) in blue, Chief Smith. We typically run from 7 PM to 9 PM ET on Tuesday nights. We currently have four regulars, plus one MIA K9 officer.

Ask your friend to post here as well if s/he is interested in joining up with us.

The Rikti were at it again. Five minutes ago, Vanguard scientists detected a dimensional incursion in Atlas Park. Dozens of portals split the air and hundred of armored soldiers began to pour through.

The Heroes of Paragon City were ready for them. Vanguard soldiers from the nearby office and AP stations PPD were carefully stationed to hold off the initial invasion while heroes from all over the city continually appeared to reinforce their positions and push back the tide.

Officer Norton felt especially lucky this day. He was stationed on the fringes of Atlas Park, were portals only rarely appeared. His superiors assured him that someone had to be stationed there just in case. He was just glad to be out of the line of fire for once.

A burst of air and a loud clang changed all of that. A portal opened right in front of him. He barely had time to sound the alarm before something emerged from the portal.

He aimed his rifle, then froze as he got a look at the new arrival.

It was a dog.

His hair was clogged by mud and there were cuts and burns all over his body. That was not was really got his attention. Even the bent and torn pieces of metal hanging from the back of his front paws barely got his notice. It was the fact that he was walking upright. That and he was carrying a small blond girl on his back.

Stumbling out of the portal, he fell to the ground.

"Vanguard," he managed to cough out, "Take us to Vanguard."
