Current Take on Fire/Fire

There doesn't seem to be much discussion of Fire/Fire lately. I've tried a number of Doms without ever getting into one, and I like the look of Fire/Fire on paper because it seems like it would do ridiculous damage (even if it is a bit squishy).

What are the current prevailing opinions on this?

I love the heck out of my Fire/Fire Dom.

Found it very hard pre-32, but that was before the dom buffs, so my experience there may no longer be representative of reality. Once I began IOing and approaching the level cap, the character turned into a total badass. Once I finished her IO build, I ended up with a character that can solo 8-man spawns with ease and efficiency, beat most Scrapper builds in raw DPS*, and permahold AVs.

My opinion is that Fire/Fire can be difficult and unforgiving, but with investment of time and inf (the price tag can actually get quite intimidating), it's a build that can kick much butt. Mine spoils me for damage. It's put me off Blasters because they can't hope to compare with her.

* Used this thread for comparisons. My dominator's score was 248 DPS.

Fire/Fire is the king of damage. You get less reliable AoE control, but most mobs will melt even before the low duration stun of Flashfire wears off anyway. You'll see a significant jump in damage once you get Fiery Embrace, a 2nd jump once you get your imps, and then finally you will feel like a true fiery god once you get Blaze.

Also would you mind posting your build as a data chunk please? The link doesn't seem to work for me. :/

I edited the original post. (It seems that the "preview" button applies formatting but wipes out links.)

The build makes some minor sacrifices to reach for PermaDom and is more expensive than I can afford right now, but I also won't get to play much for the next two months, so she actually won't have to wait long to transfer over to blueside and get slotted.

Fire/Fire is expensive to permadom, but also cares less about permadom. Chasing control on fire/fire is almost a waste of time. Fire/fire solos decently - dial up the level but not the spawn sizes, chase bosses and chew through things like that. It's also a great team player. It deals fantastic damage to single hard targets, can spread that damage around, animates quickly, and has enough control for any decent team. Bonus points for supplying rains for those that want 'em.

This is my current build on live. It is very expensive - the price of purples have increased greatly since when I bought all mine, and I probably couldn't afford it if I had to start from scratch now.

But this is my most beloved character, so the cost was worth it to me.

Edit: I should add that it's not necessary to spend quite this much cash to get a beastly fire/fire Dom. I loved the heck out of mine long before my build was complete.

Here's my Fire/Fire dom. Softcapped smashing/lethal defense, permadom without Hasten level recharge.

I play twice as badly as usual whenever I'm playing it because of all the bloodflow being diverted away from my brain and hands.

I can understand if you wanted to drop Combustion, but Fire Breath too? Put a Posi's Blast and a + range in that badboy and you are good to go.

Yeah, I know but I couldn't fit it in. (No, that is not what she said). If it were Fireball, on the other hand....we'd talk

It was very tempting though. But I decided I'd rather have Incinerate. Set dudes on fire, show them who is boss.

Protip: it is me, I am boss.

What would be more awesome would be to SET MORE PEOPLE ON FIRE.

Final build wise, if I had to choose between Incinerate or Fire Breath, I would go for Fire Breath hands down. Lining up your cone isn't really an issue when without Incinerate, you don't have a reason to be in melee anyway.

For a more general build, yeah I'd go with Fire Breath. AoE damage = win on teams. But I wanted a more ST focus for hilariously high ST DPS.

For that, I need Incinerate :3

At some point, I realized there would be no way I could afford that build. I don't have much in CoV.

How does this build look? I think I can afford it at 50, if I put all my Inf into Posi Blast and Obliteration.

Datalink is broked. Post the datachunk.

Just eyeballing it though:

Drop the range/slow in Hot Feet for a Dam/end from one of the PBAoE sets, Tempered Readiness gives crap end rdx and damage values, which are key in Hot Feet.

Either skip Bonfire completely, or use it as a set mule if you must (Kinetic Crash for 7.5% rech). I'd really not recommend it though, you've got much more important powers to slot. So uh, give Bonfire a miss. Slow animation, undesirable effects.

Swap the Oblit Dam in Combustion for the proc. It'll give it a little more upfront damage and the rest of the Oblit set gives plenty of damage enhancement.

Basilisk's gaze is a great set for bonuses, but doesn't give good enhancement values. This is alright in Cinders, but not in Char. If you're going with 4 BG's in Char, swap the 2 damage IOs for triple IOs from some of the other hold sets to bring the acc/rech/hold stats up.

Gah, I keep forgetting that Preview breaks DataLinks. DataLink fixed and datachunk added.

Bonfire can be a lot of fun if used with enough practice. I'll probably shuffle things around and lose it if they ever let us slot Accurate ToHit Debuff in Smoke (like you can in every other version of that power!), but for now I'm keeping it as a matter of taste.

I'll take those into consideration.

Thanks Silas!

No, I realized in my latest build that I'm a long way from being able to afford permaDom.

I'd still aim for Permadom, its definitely worth it, just for the extra mag and mez protection. The end bar refills are also pretty great since Fire/Fire is pretty end heavy and Consume takes an age to recharge.

You don't need a build as pricey as mine is, my build is way over the top because I wanted permadom without Hasten and softcap s/l defense. You only need 70~% recharge with Hasten decently slotted to get Permadom.

Granted, Fire/Fire can be tricky to Permadom since the slotting options are more limited compared to some other sets, but its still very doable on a budget. Stuff like Posis, Oblits, Decimations will be the most expensive stuff and you've got those in your original build.

Try drawing up a skeleton build that has about 75-80% recharge, 3 slot Hasten and boom, there's your Permadom. The more recharge you have, the more leeway you have to hit Hasten/Domination in time, but 75~ is enough if you're on the ball.

Posi Blasts in Breath, Decimations in Flares and Blast, Stupefys in Flashfire, Expedient Reinforcements in Imps is 31.25% rech. Basi Gazes in Char and Cinders, Kinetic Crash in Bonfire is another 22.5%. Put Crushing Impacts in Incinerate, Efficacy Adaptors in Consume and Obliterations in Combustion is another 15%.

You can then easily run a bunch of TFs to save up enough merits for a LotG 7.5, bringing you to 76.25%. That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure if you played around with it in Mids you could come up with better ideas

You might surprise yourself there.

Not with Fire/Fire (though the Ice/Ice I duo with did). I know from experience that a combination of bad graphics lag and my tendency to get distracted will ensure that I am not "on the ball," so I need permaHasten to have a chance at keeping Dom up.

I don't feel like it will be worth it if I have to make major build sacrifices (like taking Mace Mastery for all the Kinetic Crash opportunities), and Silas' "run a bunch of TF's to earn a LotG" strategy isn't going to work because I'll already need to do that just to get the Obliteration and Posi Blast sets.
