Soft-capped problem

Hey guys, im getting very... hmmm, whats the word... PISSED. I cant seem to hit soft-cap on anything I want. I mean melee, thats given soft-cap. But, I want ranged, smash, and lethal to. It seems like I have tryed every single build there is for my DM/SR scrapper, and he still wont get there. Is there any trick to getting to soft-cap? If so, i would like to know , and if not, well then im a nub hah. Also, is resist better than defense? It seems like on my shield scrap soon as my defense gets bypassed i die almost immediately or after a few swings. Given hes an Elec/Shield most are wiped before they get a chance to hit me, but sometimes i do get hit and it can be devastating. Maybe, its just me, idkkk lol. Thanks in advance!

Why are you worring about Smashing & Lethal Defense, when as a /SR all you need to worry about is the Positional Defenses (Melee/Ranged/AOE).

You either work on Positional Defense or you work on Typed Defense (Smashing/Lethal/Fire/Cold/Energy/Negative).

As a /SR scrapper, you just need to work on Positional. For /SR Scrapper that's pretty easy to softcap.

Well, I think you might be spreading yourself a little too thin trying to get all of those. Your stronger defenses power wise from SR are going to be Melee, Ranged, and AOE. I don't think it will possible to hit everything you want (S/L is not SR's strong point), so just focus on those three, and you should be fine. I've heard of some builds softcapping all three of the above mentioned, and some builds softcapping two, and coming close to one. Honestly, focus on the Melee/Ranged, get as close as you can on the AOE, and with the way defense works you should be alright. Just play with the IO sets, and you should get there. (I play an Ice/Ice Tank and was able to cap four of my defenses, but that set has strong defenses versus 4, so play to SR's strengths and capitalize on Melee/Ranged/AOE.)

As for resist versus defense...on your DM/SR scrapper, defense is you life's blood, since the set is sorely lacking on damage resistance. Taking tough couldn't hurt, and would allow you to take the IOs that offer the 3% global defense (Steadfast/Gladiator's), but on that toon, forget about using damage resistance as a main source of defense.

Get mids and post your build. Let everyone take a look see and see if we can offer any advice.

Positional defenses are melee, ranged, and AoE. If you can soft cap all three then you're in really good shape. That should be doable on an SR or Shield scrapper.

Typed defenses include smashing/lethal and other types such as energy, negative energy, fire, cold, etc. Please note: If you're softcapped for melee defense, then an attack that is melee and smashing/lethal will check against the melee defense (whichever is higher). Therefore you do NOT need to softcap vs. both melee and smashing/lethal. In fact it's pointless to do so.

Given that you're SR, you should have no problems softcapping melee and ranged, if not AoE as well.

As for what's better, resist or defense... softcapped defense is going to make you much tougher in most situations than high resists will. But when defense lets you down, it can do so in a big way, yes. I'll let the numbers people explain in more detail, but the difference between 40% defense and 45% defense can be pretty huge.

Also you can't really build for resist through IOs. There are just a couple that add a little bit, but basically if you play a resistance set you have high resists, if you don't, you don't. But a resistance set can have very high defense through IOs or even softcapped defense (to melee or to smashing/lethal usually), and that can be a great combo. ^_^

I threw this together real quick. You may not necessarily want to use this build, but perhaps it can give you a few ideas on where to start. It's softcapped to Melee and Range, and around 40% to AoE. A little more effort I could probably figure out how to softcap the AoE defense, but I don't feel like it. Good luck.

Likewise, just thrown together and probably not the most spectacular build around, but this gives you 49.3% melee, 50.8% ranged, and 55.2% AoE. Which is overkill. Just an example of how easy it is to softcap an SR.

adding in my 2 cents here on how easy it is to soft cap SR, this is the build im going to be useing for my dm/sr. The only IO bonus that he has is the steadfast protection +3% def for a total of 42.7% def to melee, ranged and AoE.

As a down side, this build would be using more end than the other 2 posted since he doesnt have any 'real' set bonus'

The easiest way to softcap SR is:
take all of the defensive powers from SR, Combat Jumping and Weave and 3 Slot with Def Buffs.
Slot the Steadfast +Def/Res in Tough
Slot a set of Gaussians in Focused Accuracy from Body Mastery Epic.

This will take you over the softcap to all positions.

L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR

Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller

Thanks guys. I was getting so worked up on this topic. Thanks for anwsering. Also, I have been saving inf for awhile now and have just over 6 bill. So, was planning on spending it on him, didnt want to screw the whole build up

You can easily softcap an /SR with less than 400 mil >.>

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

Yeah, i know. But i also want massive recharge, which requires purples if you want the +10% Recharge enhance.

Reiterating what has already been said for emphasis, the game applies the higher of your positional defense (melee, ranged, AoE) or your typed defense (smashing, lethal, etc.). So in almost all cases, you only need to soft cap positional OR typed defense, not both. Super Reflexes is all about positional defense. Don't worry at all about typed defense.

Resistance is better than defense in some situations. As you've experienced, defense allows for spikes of damage that can kill you, even if the average damage is fairly low. Resistance protects you better from those sorts of spikes. Defense, on the other hand, also protects you from debuffs, since most of them need to hit you to take effect. So one or the other is better in different situations. The reason why defense is king on scrappers isn't that, but rather that it is easier to get high levels of defense, and that is is possible to get a much higher level of average damage mitigation (90%) from defense than resistance (75%).

For maximum survivability, though, you want both. You want to have soft-capped defense, but you also want to pick up all the resistance you can. On Super Reflexes, that means taking all of your passives, as they provide a scaling damage resistance that increases as you get injured. I also highly recommend Tough, both for the resistance and for the Steadfast Protection 3% defense IO.

And survivability doesn't end there, of course. You also want higher maximum hit points, which are fairly equivalent to having more resistance, as they protect you against those same damage spikes. And then you want regeneration and healing, which Dark Melee provides for you in Siphon Life.

If you go hard core on all of those fronts, you'll probably be more survivable than you'll need for 99% of the game. But you CAN do it if you want to dip into that last 1%.

And for reference, here is hitting the soft cap by 36 with a single IO. I leveled using this template, and it's perfectly playable, though probably not nearly as much fun as taking some decent attacks and a travel power.

Well, you're a long way from perma Hasten (the proc in Kick won't be going off). Smite and Shadow Maul are underslotted (mostly from an endurance prespective), Midnight Grasp is pretty much the best single target attack and you've skipped it. Siphon Life needs to be slotted primarily as an attack unless you're going for hard core survivability over general utility. Most people skip Elude on soft-capped builds because it will almost never help prevent bad guys from hitting you and just get you killed when it crashes. Your passives are under slotted, which I believe leaves you hurting for defense debuff resistance, which is one of the main reasons for taking Super Reflexes. I think it might affect the scaling resistance as well, though I don't remember.

This is going to be a little out of date (I13), but here's Sergei's AV-soloing build. Three expensive purple sets but no PvPs since they didn't exist then. If I were redoing his build today, I'd probably pick up Physical Perfection and some PvP IOs (+3% defense, +3% resist, Panacea proc). And I'd try really hard to squeeze Shadow Maul back in. And that would probably lead to a giant cascade of changes as I rebalanced everything. It would also probably give me a somewhat higher than 6 billion influence build, so probably isn't the route you'd want to take.

My Siphon Life is slotted to be able to spam faster than the chain when necessary and pick up a few more hit points. Unless you're routinely doing really nasty things, that's overkill. A better approach on a perma Hasten build is probably three Nucleolus and three Golgi for maximum everything but recharge. Most people will probably appreciate the greater damage output of that compared to the greater survivability of mine.

Not bad, not bad at all. Thanks. I made a few adjustments of my own and it seems like it would work out pretty good. Reduced recharge just a little, and only 8 sec's inbetween for hasten recharge, so nearly perma.
