Help me pick a domi, well, two of them actually

To cut the story short, I'm in love with mind/ and ice/, and I wanna make a domi with each of these powersets. Trouble is, I know squat about domis except that I kinda like them (from playing a couple into the teens, including the aforementioned primaries as well as plant/, /elec, /ice and /fire). I'd also like at least one of them to be great for AoE damage, well, as much as domis can be anyway.

So, what would you suggest to me as good secondaries for mind/ and ice/, keeping in mind that at least one of them should be good for (PB)AoE? I guess something that's good for range would go well with mind/ and something good for PBAoE/melee would go well with ice/, I know that /fire is a monster damage dealer and that /elec is a melee/ST king, but that's about it for my domi powerset knowledge.

Although mine is only at level 23, I'll advertise my ice/thorn dom.

It's a sweet combo of ice slick/Arctic air/glacier, while whipping off thorn burst/fling thorns/thorntrops/thorn barrage, with the two strongest ST attacks for when I need'em. (that's what I'm going to wind up with, anyway. Not quite there yet.)

So far it's AoE madness and I kind of feel like a spines scrapper with holds.

You can toss some nice procs in build up and ripper too, I plan on it. Give it a whirl!

Not really, I have a decent attack chain going on right now, hitting build up takes care of the redraw in the BU animation. It doesn't seem to hinder my a**-kicking too much.

Of the two primaries you have mentioned, ice control would be better suited to a (PB)AoE style, because of the presence of arctic air. Mind is somewhat more suited to a ST playstyle, as AoE damage doesnt' play nice with some of its staple controls (mass hypnosis mostly, and to a lesser extent terrify).

The top three AoE damaging dominator secondaries are /fire, /psi, and /thorn. Any of these paired with ice will work well enough. However, my personal pick would probably be /thorn.

Ice control by far works the best inside the spawn, where AA can be leveraged to best effect. The AoE of /fire and /psi, though, consists of one PBAoE and one 30 degree arc cone each. From experience with my ice/ice (which also has a 30 degree cone, frost breath), I find that such narrow cones aren't especially easy to use with the melee-centric playstyle of ice control. I also find that I like having a secondary which can assist in mitigation, since ice's mitigation, while plenty acceptable, is more of the soft control variety. /fire has no mitigation, and /psi, while slowing targets and having drain psyche, also makes you wait on psychic shockwave until 38.

Thorny, by comparison, has one PBAoE and one 90 degree cone, which should be much easier to leverage while also remaining close enough to the spawn to use AA. Both AoEs are available by 20, and the set has some mitigation in terms of knockdown and avoid. Fling thorns also has a quicker animation than psi scream or fire breath, which should make it even easier to use. Also, don't discount thorntrops. While the numbers floating up are small, they do add up. If it hits the foes for 10 seconds, it'll do about 40% as much damage as thorn burst, which is pretty good given its low end cost, reasonably fast animation, and 15 foot radius. (It's also helpful against single tough targets if you can immobilise them, doing about 125 damage unenhanced over its 45 second lifetime. That's slightly more than your tier 3 blast, for much less end.)

For the mind/ dom, I'd actually suggest a ST melee-centric secondary, simply because mezmerize and levitate are pretty good ST ranged attacks in their own right and can easily fill in for a secondary with less ranged ability. In this case, I'd probably pick /elec or /stone - both of them have strong melee attacks and are light on ranged powers. They are also both relatively ST focused, which will be great for solo work combined with mass hypnosis.

I've seen great Mind/Earth, Mind/Fire, and Mind/Elec Dominators. Mind/Fire has the best ranged damage, and Mind/Elec probably has the best Melee Damage. Mind/Earth has solid Melee damage with extra control from Seismic Smash, Power Boost, and Fissure. I don't know how important more control would be to a MIND dom, but juggling an enemy with Levitate and Stone Spears seems like it would be fun. :P

An Ice/Ice Dom has stacking debuffs, a combination of ranged and melee damage, and Power Boost, but only has two AoE attacks in Ice Sword Circle and Freeze Breath. An Ice/Thorns Dom has a lot of AoE to throw around, and no knockback to make enemies fly out of Ice Patch or other Ice powers, making it a safe little AoE killer. An Ice/Psy dom will have stacking -recharge debuffs and one of the best PBAoE attacks in the game, but the first 37 levels before Psychic Shockwave will leave you with mostly ST damage.

Personally, I would make a Plants/Psy, Plants/Thorn, or Fire/Psy Dom if you're wanting Good control and AoEs. Nothing wrong with Ice at all, but Plant Manipulation has a lot more damage, and Fire Manipulation has even MORE damage and Imps.

It has no secondary effects besides damage, but that suits a set with a lot of control like Mind/ just fine. Some of the other pairings for Mind/ put forth have merit as well, you just have to pick the one that appeals to you the most.

Ice/Psi because there is very strong synergy between the sets. Ice/ plays in close to get the most out of the set, and also gets a lot of its control through slows. The thing about slows is they don't eliminate incoming damage the way hard controls do, they just reduce them. /Psi has Drain Psyche, which turns you into a regen Dom. Especially once you get your patron shield, you can absorb the few attacks coming your way and regen back the damage you take. Drain Psyche is best used in close, same as Ice/. Then there's Psychic Shockwave, another great power used in close. The playstyle that arguably gets the most out of both sets is nearly identical. They seem made to go together.

Artic air + psw is full of win. Mind you it will take a while to get there but double xp weekend is just around the corner.
