Shield Defense inflames my Altitis

Just to clarify, the phalanx fighting value for ranged defense is wrong for scrappers, but you can fix it manually. I did on my Mids. You go in under the database main editor and select scrapper defense / shield / phalanx (double click) and look under the effects tab and find the 3.5% ranged line and double click that and then change the Affects drop-down on the lower left to "None". Then save all your changes and re-start Mids.

If anyone is still willing to answer my questions, that'd be cool. If I don't get answers in a few days, I'll start a new thread instead of burying my questions deep in this thread.

(1) I managed to get a Fire/SD character with only 44% melee defense, but 47% to ranged and 46% to AOE. However, it does allow me to have the various concept attacks I feel obligated to have. Are those numbers sufficient, considering I have Grant Cover and all the other stuff in my build that can at least sorta keep my defense debuff resistance up?
44%+ for a position is very sufficient. However, you will notice the difference between your scrapper and another that is soft capped, but fire/shield kills fast enough that the difference in mitigation is largely irrelevant.

Although personally, I'd have grabbed combat jumping instead of grant cover. I'd much rather have fully soft capped defenses than better DDR. Plus the 2% defens that CJ would give you would give you better flexibility to swap around slots in your build.

Quote:
(2) Is it sufficient to have these attacks (3 single, 4 AOE)? Fire Sword, Greater Fire Sword, Fire Blast, Breath of Fire, Fire Sword Circle, Shield Charge, Fireball? I do realize exemplaring will suck, but I'll probably have a leveling build and an endgame build, and keep both so I can use the leveling build to exemplar.
That's more than fine. In my build, I have fire sword, cremate, incinerate, fire blast for single target and FSC and shield charge for AoE, and I feel that's plenty.

Quote:
(3) Is it OK to have True Grit unslotted except for my Steadfast res/def? I just wasnt able to come up with slots.
You could do that, but you're gimping a key power for shields, the ability to have better than average scrapper hitpoints. I'd rather have health slotted in true grit than maxing out the resistance in deflection. In fact, I'd move the Res/Def to Deflection and move the slots to true grit, even at the expense of AoE defense. Further active defense doesn't need 3 slots. You could get by with 1 if you have a high recharge build (and won't exempt) or just 2 with a build w/o any global recharge at all. I have 2 membranes in mine.

OOPS just checked and it does, sure it never used to !

When designing my DM/Shields I was working on the fact that Phalanx fighting def buff wasn't in Mids, on the basis that it is Shields is incredibly hard to softcap.

I'm getting numbers similar to Uni and in order to do that I need to drop the Hami's used for DDR.

I'm seen various people saying that their /Shield has soft cap to all positions and DDR capped and others quoting capped Def and perma Hasten.

Based on what I can get out of Mids soft capping is hard enough let alone DDR or having room for LoTG +Recharge etc.

Has anyone got a build with capped def and DDR with Hamis?
You can't make a perma hasten and soft capped fm/sd, Elec/SD yes but not FM/SD.

My FM/SD is soft capped, 150% rech, runs GFS, incin, FS smoothly.

I have 3 membranes in AD an with it double stacked, i'd never go back to it only stacked once. If i run with a rad and a kin, on my TF team, it's tripple and i'm at 95% def debuff.

Slight mod of the above build to imo equal it out, there's 2 lotgs in there that ain't needed, but can be upgrades when you get the cash. an there's now a few places to put purple sets if you want in the future.

I feel exactly the same as the OP. /Shield Defense is just too good, once you factor IOs in. Nothing can beat AAO + SC for the offense, add soft cap defense and a good tier 9 with no crash on the top of that on the defense side. And level 50 IOed performance is what I'm looking at when I plan on leveling a new toon : I usually spend some hours on mids looking for a good 50 IO build.

Furthermore the problem is triple : it's the same issue whenever i look at scrappers, brutes or tankers, my favorite ATs. It really narrows down the possibilities.

Or maybe I should accept to roll something less "optimized", but still... it hurts

Actually I wish AAO could be changed to a kind of defensive toggle, like 1-2% resist per mob around, it would make the set smoother to level with, and less "mandatory" when you look at a expensive level 50 build.

If you could use Spines, DB, etc. with Shield I wouldn't play anything else.

That'd definitely be nice, along with a HO (DDR) fix. Would make the set much weaker overall, but might tone down the "shield is squishy without 40bill inf" complaints and it'd bring it in line with other powersets.

'Course, there'd be quite an uproar, seeing as 9 out of 10 scrappers probably have a shield character by now.

I changed a suggested build that was posted.

Let me know what you think.

I am sure this build would be able to solo most anything with ease.

I can identify, I've been torn over whether to make an AoE-intense elec/sheild scrapper, or brute, or go with an AoE-sapper style of DM/FA scrapper.

Yes you can with proper leverage of energy torrent for the +rech, it also has capped DDR and aid self.
