Tech question
first question: what graphics card did you buy?
second question: how are you hooked up? 15 pin VGA cable? White DVI cable? HDMI cable?

If it was a graphics card issue, I'd expect a system halt.
I'd try swapping out the cable first since it's the cheapest fix.
Best to ask in the hardware/software help forum rather than here, they have specialists.

... please tell me you aren't in the US.
The starting price for a 9400 GT is $40. If you paid $100 for it, you paid $60 over the retail value of the card. You quite literally, PAID MORE THAN DOUBLE WHAT THE CARD IS WORTH!!!
If you're paying $100, you'd be looking at GTS 250's and RadeonHD 4850's, NOT 9400 GT's.
So first thing, if you can, send that video card back and get something worth your money.
Second thing, yes, it's probably the VGA cable.
so replacing the cable should fix the problem? or is a vga cable not equipped to handle this? replace cable or monitor?

And Nick, start with the cable unless you have another monitor to try.

Anyway, thanks to all who offered up tips and advice. Very much appreciated at this much too early hour. I'm off to bed. thanks again!
Maybe he bought it in a store instead of ordering it online. Best Buy has them at $70-80.

Tried a different cord and two different monitors.. Now the problem began when the new card was installed, and so the only other logical explanation is that it is the card itself. However it only occurs during game. In fact a guaranteed way to cause the signal loss is to try and create a new character. It blacks out 100% of the time during character creation. So, I'm returning the card today, but with some skepticism. How could it be a faulty card if every other function related to the graphics card is functioning exceptionally well?
Do other games do this, and have you tried starting in safe mode? (The game, not the computer. Forces it to - 640x480, I believe. Just to make sure something's not out of range.)
I recently instaled a new graphics card that seems to operate very well under most conditions. however when gaming my monitor intermitently loses signal. there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the timing. it has happened in the character creation screen more than any other place, but I've logged multiple hours of game time with no problems also. The problem comes with no error messages or prompts. The monitor simply loses signal. i often run itunes in the background and the music continues playing even though it begins skipping when the monitor loses power. I've downloaded the latest drivers, cleaned my fans, and tried some basic maintenence procedures to rule out overheating and faulty devices. So what exactly could casue this problem? The system web surfs, plays videos, and even flash games with no hiccups, and the only way to get the monitor working again is to give the computer a hard restart. I've run other games that are less graphics and cpu intensive with little to no problem. however, this occurence began witht he new grphics card. Is there a way to troubleshoot this problem? Any help will be appreciated. please tell me my brand new 100 dollar card isn't effed in the A. any hard core techies out there willing to help a layman?
