siphon power/ranged defense kin

I'm wondering if anyone's respec'd out of siphon power. I find that I don't use it all that often since I've gotten fulcrum shift on my ar/kin, so it seems like an easy power to drop, but I can't help but feel like this power must be awesome and I'm somehow missing something. I find it handy for debuffing bosses when solo mostly.

I'm also messing around in mids trying to get a ranged defense ar/kin build... and I wonder if that's actually worth aiming for, or whether it's better to build towards smashing/lethal. I spend a fair bit of time running in and out of melee obviously, so I'm not sure how much mileage I'd get out of a 'traditional' hover blasting build. I guess this would depend a lot on how easy or hard it is to fulcrum shift yourself while hovering out of melee range.

Yeah, once you've got Fulcrum Shift Siphon Power loses a lot of its utility. I still use it on AVs to debuff their damage more.

As for ranged def vs smashing/lethal, for a corr I'd go s/l. Even if you're not going to be in melee all the time, s/l is very easy to build for on a corr because of Scorpion Shield. But especially since you're a kin you should go for s/l because almost all melee attacks that could get aimed at you when you're in the fray for Fulcrum etc will have a smashing/lethal component, whereas ranged def wouldn't help you at all.

+1. Ranged defense is very secondary compared to s/l, melee. I always keep Siphon Power even if it is left at 1 slot.

S/L softcap is easy to reach with Scorp Shield. Ranged softcap is much harder to reach without skewing the build, and it won't help you when you run into melee to grab the FS damage boost.

I've always kept Siphon Power for two reasons:

1. The buff centers on YOU, not the target, making it a good way to buff the Blasters who staying out of FS's reach.

2. FS only hits your damage cap if you have a lot of targets. In prolonged AV or GM battles, this will rarely prove to be the case, so SP offers more damage boosting (as well as more damage debuffing on the AV, as mentioned above).

They usually come earlier in sets, around 3-4 slots. If you've got the money Kinetic Combats are great, 3.75% def for 4 slots. Smashing Haymakers work too but are much less effective for the slots which may require more slotting of melee powers than you might find palatable.

Using a few sets of Kinetic Combat, a steadfast +3% def, CJ, Weave and Scorpion Shield softcapped my s/l. Put them in Brawl/Boxing/whatever.

Reactive Armor for Tough is another option, its only 1.5% though. There's also some slow set that gives a little s/l def you could put in Siphon Speed but I'd really advise against it since it gives really ****** enhancement values.

The route I went (mostly copying/translating a friends softcap s/l fire/kin build) was the expensive route. While at first I balked at the idea of slotting Boxing, Brawl and Kick because lolwtf, it gave me immense freedom for the rest of my slots so I could get perma-hasten levels of recharge on the side as well as not gimp any of my attacks or kin powers.

Yeah

I'll admit, its very unconventional but it works great. Who cares if you took an extra melee attack and slotted Brawl if you still have 50+ slots and power selections left for all your primary and secondary stuff.

Here's the data chunk. Since the only s/l def I'm getting from my Primary is the Oblits in Atomic Blast you should be able to translate it easily enough.

Fair warning, its a tad on the pricey side :3

Heh, all this time and I never realised Mids has that feature, thanks for the tip.

The current build I've made is just over 41% def. Granted I could probably get closer to the cap if I took out Recall Friend for CJ (though I would rather not), or I could replace my nuke or Aim which I think are the other expendable powers. That said, is getting that extra 4% really worth it?

With 45% Def, you're getting hit by even-cons 5% of the time.
With 41% Def, you're getting hit by even-cons 9% of the time.

Given that you've made the effort to get to 41%, I'd get the additional 4% to essentially-halve those incoming attacks.

Thanks guys, this has cleared up a few issues for me with my AR/Kin Corr. Only wondering whether I should throw a few BotZs in my travel powers for some layered ranged defence (~30%ish, and giving me 39% Energy def!) if anyone has any experience with it?

About the Fire/Kin build earlier if you can tolerate swapping out Rain of Fire and a few switches at what level you are taking certain powers, then this will cap your S/L defence.

Are you already S/L softcap? If so, then I wouldn't worry about adding Positional Defense as well; some other goal (Recharge Reduction?) is a better secondary then moar Def.

Fire Breath then? I wasn't too sure what to swap out really but I think he will appreciate essentially being hit almost half as much with the new build being put at the soft cap. I'm totally open to other suggestions if Tangler thinks he could drop anything, just trying to help.

About my build, I think I'll just shoot for more recharge, thanks Harkness.

Cheers guys for all the input.

I'm a bit hesitant to drop my AoE powers, though if I had to I would drop Firebreath, since that would save me from jumping back out to align a cone right after FS. I think I will drop TP Ally in place of Web Envelope at this point after all, and reshuffle some of the slots to slot the power, keeping Aim and my nuke (that I'll have an easier time to set up thanks to the S/L) to boot.
