Illusion/Which?

So I have a character I want to make, named "The Illumineer," and I've decided that an Illusion troller is the way to go (though I considered energy and/or rad blasters and defenders as well, I wanted something different). To keep the light theme of the character, I'm thinking either Rad or Empathy as his secondary, but I don't know which I would rather pick. I've played a Rad and I like him, but he's Grav/Rad, and I've never played an Empath. Any advice on which of those two secondaries would be a better mate to Illusion?

To answer your question Ill/Rad is by far the stronger combination for playability solo.

but, have you considered;

Sonic would visually match your description, even though technically its sound.

Kinetic is flashy as well, but would synergize less with Illusion.

And Forcefield could be colored differently to give more "lightwave" appearance.

Cannot think of any secondaries that really emote light other than these, but with power customization, alot is possible.

BIOSPARK :: DARKTHORN :: SKYGUARD :: WILDMAGE
HEATSINK :: FASTHAND :: POWERCELL :: RUNESTAFF

Empathy is my favorite set in the game but i have an Ill/Emp and that toon just doesnt synch real well with me. I think on that toon i would of been way happier to roll a Ill/rad. Emp has some great powers and i always love heal others and healing aura with everything minus absorb pain(i never liked that power).

Sry I take capabilities/effectiveness over concept any day of the eon.

Ill/Rad is the way to go. You compliment your Phantoms & you very much compliment you human teammates.

But as they say,

"Play whichever power sets make the game fun for YOU."

Ill/Rad is probably the most rounded and most powerful combinations - AV soloer

Ill/Emp is probably the ultimate healer in the game. Illusion is quite a passive primary - drop the pets for control and then use Superior Invisability to go places other healers can't and concentrate on the healing/buffing.

Ill/Kin - is probably the ultimate scrapptroller in the game - passive primary allows you to concentrate on personall buffs and attacking via Epics. Works best with Stone Epic.

So really depends on what you want from the alt - they each offer and play completely differently.

L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR

Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller

Ill/Rad is the classic powerhouse, but Ill/Emp has a feature I like which I call "PUG mode". When things go pear-shaped on a spectacularly inept PUG, you can keep Superior Invisibility on and continue to control, buff, and even (much as some people dread the word) heal without getting the slightest whiff of aggro by restricting yourself to certain powers. You're still keeping up your role in the group and as an added bonus no matter how badly the other guys screw the pooch you come up smelling like a rose.

I'm a bit partial to Illusion/Radiation, as you might be able to guess from the Ill/Rad guide, linked in my sig. The guide explains why I feel that Ill/Rad is one of the most flexible builds in the game, and why Radiation is the best secondary for Illusion. The short version: Rad is the only secondary that can BOTH provide a recharge boost to help Phantom Army recharge faster AND provide Resistance and Defense Debuffs to make Phantom Army hit harder and more often. Rad provides an all-purpose secondary that works great solo, small teams or large teams. You can do a little of everything from buffing teammates (and yourself) to debuffing and controlling foes.

(Even if you have played a Grav/Rad, you will find that Illusion/Radiation plays differently. I have Ill/Rad, Fire/Rad, Earth/Rad and Plant/Rad all at 50, and each one plays differently. I also have Ill/Storm and Ill/TA at 50, and they are very different from Ill/Rad.)

I consider Illusion/Empathy to be a team-only build. Illusion/Empathy has nothing to benefit Phantom Army, the most important power in the Illusion set. None of your buffs will affect PA, and you don't have any debuffs. Sure, you can buff Phantasm, but that has limited benefit since he stays back and blasts while using his decoy to draw aggro -- the decoy gets no benefit from your buffs, either.

Basicly, Empathy provides very little benefit if you want to solo other than the aura heal, Regen and Recovery powers. Now, if you want to be a team-focused healer type, Ill/Emp is a great choice for its ally buffs -- Deceive and Phantom Army can pull foes off of teammates allowing you to run in and heal, and the Invisibility allows you to "lurk" in the battlefield healing and buffing teammates as needed.

Take a look at my Ill/Rad guide even if you decide to go with Ill/Emp. It has a lot of good information on the Illusion primary and many strategy tips.

Illusion/Radiation is the classic combo. Radiation powers colored white definitely look a bit like liquid light. Just make sure they aren't too bright for teammates to see.

Illusion/Empathy is a different type of character. I agree with Local Man that that is more of a team build. Illusion/Thermal would work as well, and although you can't buff the Phantom Army the flaming Phantasm looks really cool. Again, watch the opacity on the shield coloring because it can be overwhelming.

Ill/kin is very fun...but very clicky!

All right guys, thanks for the insight - I think I'll go with Rad here, since I don't want my play experience to be 100% dependent on having a team and because so far it sounds like Rad is just... rad. Now I just gotta come up with a costume...

There are some nice things you can to with Power Customization. I have my Phantasm as a yellow glowing power -- would work for a "man made from light." And then the opposite -- Spectral Terror in dark purple looks cool and could be a creature that absorbs light, invoking fear. You won't be able to tell how cool it looks in the character creator, but trust me, a dark purple Spooky looks awesome in a light room.

Oh, I already planned on the power customization thing. I was going to use a pale golden color scheme for most of them, but I'll definitely keep dark in mind for the Spectral Terror (and yeah, I know how cool that kind of stuff can look - my Grav troller's primaries are all dark-colored, and Singularity is kind of up the same alley).
