It's easy. Click on User CP, go down to Edit Avatar, and type in a link to a hosted picture that's the right filesize, shape and format for an avatar.
any pic from photobucket or Flicker will do. I can't see most of them from my work PC cause the sites iz blokk'd....
Believe me, it doesn't have to be the "right filesize" but it would be considerate to your fellow forumites to keep the size down.
When displayed it will squeeze the image into a 100x100 box. So if you don't want distortion then try to crop the original image as a square.

And ignore the 'Upload Image' button, you cannot upload images. Use the [IMG][/IMG] tags. Photobucket, Flickr, Imageshack, etc will give you those options, or you can use the 'Insert Image' button (looks like landscape with a yellow background.)

I can't speak for Flickr or ImageShack, but PhotoBucket will give you an option called Direct Link. That's the one you'll want to copy and paste into the box for your avatar.
