Has your character ever been involved in a purposeful, compelling story?
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
I would like to issue a plea on behalf of Paragon's diminutive protectors, please watch where you step. We're four feet tall in a six foot tall world, we've been cast adrift in a sea of butts. -Pillbug

I'm huge on the meaningful RP.
In fact, my new favorite toon was created explicitly for a meaningful RP purpose.
An RP story that is -far- too long to write right now. But it's good.
...To us anyway. :P

My characters feel like nightclub attendees. Has your character ever been involved in a purposeful, compelling story about superheroes? How did you achieve this?

I personally don't see the point of roleplaying unless it's playing a purposeful compelling story. You don't even really need to try at it. You just need dynamic characters who are more than the sum of their backstory with clear motives and goals that generally coincide but conflict in significant ways and a story will happen all on it's own organically.
Unfortunately, people like me are in the minority of roleplayers, I have learned, so I stick with a small group these days and don't really try to involve others anymore. Every time we've tried to invite someone in, recently, I've regretted it.
Eurgh, looking a a lot of the descriptions floating around I'm kind of glad there aren't many 'epic' stories right now. There's a ridiculous amount of wanted heroes, criminals operating in Paragon City, 'undetectable' vigilantes that only change the colour of their costume, etc. Seems 'epic' equates with 'no consequences' to most people.

Reformed villain here. Try playing the last arc redside and give me an appropriate response. Have never been anything but honest with what I am and if that's not good enough for you then 'lulz, is that near Atlas Park?'
Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!
I have been on virtue for a few years now, ive seen the ups and downs of alot of RP on it. (( no, I am not a big nor popular character, just in the background for most of it)) and I would say that the largest difficutly people face, is not in finding these epic storylines, but playing characters that fit them. Most roleplayers seem loathe to let the world around them change their characters, develop them, and seem stuck on the situation of ' I want this character to be here with their life' rather then letting their surroundings help shape who they are. This make things very difficult when you are trying to lead, or take part in a story.
This is not to say it is the wrong way to roleplay, I am saying it hampers this sort of meaningful roleplay that helps define character and build life.
I will +1 to the comment that you need a central person directing the story. A 'DM' if you will, as much like life, you come across many situations that you would not react to in the same way if you could dictate how they started. Having a random element in a player directing traffic creates these stiuations
The long and the short of it is, in this players humble opinion. If you want meaningful roleplay, you have to be willing to accept some of the aspects that come with life, false hardship and conflict will not breed what you want out of well rounded characters.
The players need to stand as well as those operating the events!
Thats my two cents
Meaningful RPs?
For my characters?
Never!
(Actually, the answer is yes. Self destructing via Godzilla vs. Destroyah style meltdown in the face of a god is clearly epic in itself. Anyone who says otherwise simply does not understand and lacks a dramatic soundtrack of their own.)
