Single Blade set
try katana?
I'd like to see a Single Blade set for Scrappers. Something with rapiers and small swords in mind. Maybe lots of fast hitting, but medium to low damage attacks.
I know I can get rapiers via dual blades, but I'd love to only need one. |
I see this as a one-handed version of Claws (fast, low damage) or Katana. I'm not sure that this carves out (no pun intended) a unique enough niche between these two weapon-using Lethal-Damage-Type sets.
What would the inherent side effect be? Some melee powersets have -Acc, KB, -Def, stuns, etc. What would this set have as it's trademark?
DoT maybe. And maybe a defense bonus.
use katana or broad sword.
Maybe if they offered a rapier in either set, I would. There are some really weird limitations on what weapon is offered in each power set.
Pipe dream: Rapier animations and models in Broadsword set.
Unlikely to happen, sadly. It's incredibly hard to make any swordsman that doesnt look like a cleaver wielder or a pirrouteting ponce. Fencing and especially sabre fighting are much more nimble than broadsword fighting, but nowhere near as OTT florid (cool, yes, but not so great for more natural characters) as DB is.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

well, if you want a rapier, then use dual blades. use a rapier in one hand and a main droite in the other. or get the ninja pack and use the chinese jian in the broad sword set. other than that, i would just ask if they could put a rapier style sword ( although it would be a thicker blade ) in broadsword.
Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."
Stuff

I don't know if a rapier could take down a Freakshow tanker, but hey why not?
I'd say despite being one handed, you'd have to prohibit shields from it (you NEED to go into fencing poses to make it look right, which means left arm behind you and used for balance).
The unique ability would be /reach./ Fencing is about long weapons and holding them out. You'd have melee attacks with range 2-3 feet longer than other melee weapons because you're thrusting rather than slashing or smacking. Attacks would have different reaches with one, "Lunge" having a good 15 foot reach with an animation of you stepping forward, thrusting, and hopping back right afterward. Also stack on some slows or immobilizes in the form of MA-Style crippling attacks to take advantage of the reach.
It'd need an attack similar to parry, but also one to give Ranged defense, allowing you to effectively deflect blasts with your weapon, because that would be cool.
Another idea: An attack that gives you a +Def aura for a short time. parry for allies.

A Sabre MIGHT looks ok in the broadsword set, because thats a bit more slash and hack than the other two weapons (foil and epee) but it's still a slightly botched job.

Dual blades is not even close to how a real rapier works.

i was thinking more along the lines of the rapier that richie(stan kirsh) used in the highlander series after he became immortal. it was a thick, well not so much thick as it was wider, bladed rapier. and if you get the valkerie pack, you get a saber style sword in broad sword.

CapnGeist - That's awesome for an idea.
I think a lot of people don't really understand how fencing works, so they just think broadsword would cover this. Broadsword is slow and heavy. Fencing is fast and light.
I had a friend that was into fencing. He pulled out one of these:
I pulled out one of these:
I said "I'd say we got different ideas of Fencing."
((Yes, it was a joke, but most twenty-somethings have never seen Fencing Pliers, and there was never any worry of him actually stabbing me with the sword.))

They hurt, and the target area? Anywhere

"Fencing"
-Cut: Melee, Low Damage (Lethal), Range 9, Foe Slow
-Thrust: Melee, Moderate damage (Lethal), Range 11
-Parry: Melee, Moderate damage (Lethal), +Def Melee, Smashing, Lethal, Range 9
-Feint: Melee, Minor damage (Lethal), Range 11, +To Hit, +Damage, Foe Stun (5 sec)
-Invitation (as Confront)
-Deflect: Melee, Moderate damage (Lethal), Range 9, +Def Ranged, Energy, Negative Energy
-Lunge: Melee, High Damage, Cone (20 degrees), Range 15
-Riposte: Melee, Extreme Damage (Lethal), Interrupt time 2.5 seconds, Range 11
Yes, it has no extra defense vs fire, cold, or psi. I figure it shouldn't pack AoE defense (because how are you going to stop an explosion with a rapier? Answer: You are not) and Fire/Cold is usually lumped in with AoE. As for Psi, well... It's Psi.
The basic idea here is that you've got Cut and Thrust to just attack with, Feint as a replacement build up that also adds a short Stun, and then Riposte as a finishing blow against the foes that can't hit you through your high defenses (or because they're stunned.) Yes, I know interrupt times are annoying, but I figure because Riposte here is the capstone, and because of its style, it should be doing a base of close to 300 damage. A proper riposte is a killing blow, after all.
ALternatively, instead of Feint, "Preparation" (As build up)
This set should be set up for superior Single Target damage. For soloing AVs, this should be the go-to set capable of blocking what's coming at you and fighting back with quick, painful blows. Against large groups, the rapier will quickly fall behind some other weapons, due to its near-complete lack of multi-target effects.

Rapier would be the ideal weapon for fighting a freakshow tank. Small point of impact designed for precise aiming would allow you to hit flesh more easily without the metal parts stopping you.

Hmm...my take on it.
Fencing
Lethal Damage, Default Range 10'
Tier 1: -Cut: Melee, Moderate Damage
Tier 2: -Thrust: Melee, High damage
Tier 3: -Crippling Strike: Melee, Minor damage, Mag 3 Immobilise
Tier 4: -Riposte: Melee, Minor damage, +To Hit, +Damage
Tier 5: -Parry: Melee, Minor damage, +Def Melee, Smashing, Lethal,
Tier 6: -Feint: Ranged, Foe Taunt
Tier 7: -Sweep Cut: Melee, Moderate damage, cone (90), range 15
Tier 8: -Lunge: Melee, Superior Damage, DoT, Range 12
Tier 9: -Fleche: Ranged, Extreme Damage, High Acc, Range 50, AoE Knockdown
The defences of the original were all over the place. Energy and Negative def? From a sword? Really?
This was thought up to bring it a bit more in-line with balance and the other sets (you had 8 powers, not 9, for one thing) and to make it a bit more like actual fencing.
The Fleche (Flay-sh), in case you are wondering, is an all out, all or nothing charge, where the goal is get right up in your opponents face so that they struggle to defend themselves. Hence the high acc. The knockdown, well, it's either that or repel. Maybe fear? Who's going to get in the way of a madly charging swordsman?
I also added in a Cone, because a set with NO AoE will get slated. Its that simple. MA get slated repeatedly by people for 'doing only Smashing damage and having poor AoE' This way the set has some nice pro points, as well as being a bit different to some of the others.

We need a fencing/rapier set about as much as we need an animal style kung-fu set or a nodachi (i.e. big katana) set. Yes, they all have completely different methods of use than what we have in game to imitate them, but they're close enough to do the job. I'd much rather have the devs focus on a theme that we don't already have (like psychic melee) rather than attempting to recreate something we already have a close enough proxy of.
