Forums "BB code" Suggestion/Request
I like using tables for improving layouts, and would probably use them for other things than a signature (I disabled signatures).
/signed.
No. Because the forums already use tables as part of the layout.
And, badly used, can completely break the forums. All it takes is one unclosed tag to screw it up. |
Namely, I could [QUOTE]do something like this[/QUTE] and forget a letter and it would ignore it because I didn't close off the tag.

With HTML, yes. But if a new BBCode is defined, the same safeguards which prevent from screwing things up would prevent thet able from doing the same. Trust me, I have experience extending the set of BBCodes available on a forum

Edit: oh, and quoting your post was an interesting example of what I mean.
How it originally shown:

I support this request.
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
[QUOTE=Tonality;2575744]I thought there were safeguards against doing these kinds of things.

For stuff actual page layout elements? Not that I know of.
Oh, come on. Regex isn't that hard!

If it was going to be this big of a deal, I don't think the vBulletin developers would've designed this plug-in four years ago. Yes, things can go wrong with new things. However, that's true for just about everything.
To the CoX Forum Admins and Moderators:
I apologize that this caused a 'to do' with others on the board. I just wanted something nice for everyone.

This is an incredibly civil discussion on a worthy suggestion, and half of what has been said on both sides is already beyond my basic understanding of phpBB.
Wait, who am I kidding. Most of everything said is beyond me.
I know that HTML is bad juju for a forum like this.
I've moderated boards in the past enough to know that putting up with the a##hattery of trolls can get more than tiresome.
I was wondering if there could be some custom "BB code" created to facilitate what the HTML code would do in this instance, without the hazards that straight HTML can bring.
Basically, it's TABLES for signatures.
Example:
[table][tr][td][.LEFT][.img]small image[./img][./LEFT][/td]
[td][.RIGHT][.img]small image[./img][./RIGHT][/td][/tr][/table]
OR
[table][tr][td][.LEFT][.img]small image[./img][./LEFT][/td]
[td][.CENTER][.img]small image[./img][./CENTER][/td]
[td][.RIGHT][.img]small image[./img][./RIGHT][/td][/tr][/table]
Translating Table HTML code into BB code shouldn't break anything in a perfect world. While I've been known to be wrong on more than one occasion, I've seen other boards use this in the past to great effect.
If you take a look at my current signature as an example, you can tell that the images are offset on different lines and "thicker" than it could be with this code put into play.
The end result would be shorter height signatures, which in my opinion would be golden for everyone.
Thank you for your time and attention.
