How to Take A Screenshot

Sounds simple to some, others are baffled by how to do it. I found a happy little website which explains everything, includes screenshots (how ironic) and covers how you turn that shot into an image you can then share on these message boards.

How to post an image on the message boards is a different subject though.

Learn how to make a screenshot

When you use the Print Screen button in game, it actually saves a copy to a folder in the City of Heroes directory in your Program Files as well. You can then upload the screen files (in .jpg form) to Photobucket or whatever hosting site. It's better than relying on the Clipboard function.

Actually, I think the biggest problem some have is with how the game doesn't port a screenshot from the Creation screen. (Initial character creation, or Icon/Facemaker).

REQUEST TO THE DEVS:
Can you please enable the screenshot functionality in the costume creation/editor... please?

Screengrabs from that section are tricky for those unfamiliar with editing photos or dealing with MSPaint.

To do so, you simply hit the "Print Screen" button, then switch to your editor (Photoshop, GIMP, MSPaint, whatever) and paste the image.

Sometimes you have to create a new image... in that case, the screen dimensions should port over from the system cache that you just grabbed the screen from. (In my case, 1600x1200)

Once you have the new image open, paste the "Print Screen" by either hitting "Ctrl+V" or going to "Edit - Paste".

From there, you should be able to crop the image to whichever part you were trying to get. More often than not, your Character.

Save the image as either a jpg, or a png. (jpg is smaller in file size)

Hosting the image for forum use entails going to either Imageshack, Photobucket, or whatever image hosting you prefer. Once you've hosted it, grab the url for the image and place [.img][./img] tags around it in your thread reply message... without the periods in the brackets.

Print screen may not always work. And it's a royal pain about it.

There's a clippy program thing that you can get to make screenshots, or you can do like I do.

  1. Open notepad.
  2. Make it relatively small and have it be on top of your game screen.
  3. With Notepad being the active window, hit Print Screen and go to your image editor and paste it.
You SHOULD see the entire screen including the notepad in the pasted image.
(Which is why you make it small and move it out of the way of what you're trying to grab.)

Hope this helps folks.

That's really what this is for, and I agree we should be able to get screenshots of this. I haven't actually tried it yet, but enabling the inclusion of the UI when taking screenshots may then include what's in the costume editor. May not. I should probably try it.

The clipboard is used for shots in the character costume creator. CoH doesn't recognize the Print Screen button there and so won't make a jpg for you but Windows recognizes it and puts an image on the clipboard.

Costume shots in the creator are crisper and larger than what you can get in game and you don't have to fiddle with the angles to try to get your feet in the shot, etc.
