Hi guys,

Tank newbie here

Am still low level and wiffing a lot and wondered what that does to Gauntlet's effectivness?

Do I have to hit a foe, or just fire off an attack at a targeted foe for Gauntlet to work it's taunt magic?

Thanks

It was a long time ago when I relied on gauntlet alone to test this and I was sure it did.

Yes, you need to hit to have Gauntlet work. If the attack doesn't land, neither does the AoE portion of the attack. It just won't fire off.

This is why Tanker attacks need Accuracy, to not only make sure that the attack hits, but that Gauntlet will fire off. Once the attack hits, the gauntlet effect is auto-hit, though.

Gauntlet does have a to-hit check against EBs and AVs, though.

I was thinking Gauntlet has a to-hit against everything the other night, but that was wrong. Gah. It does make a check on EBs and AVs, I'm quite sure, as that is one of the reasons I think it's worth taking Taunt (I looked it up a long while ago).

This is one of those things I've been meaning to test for a while, but I keep forgetting / never get the opportunity.

To the best of my knowledge, single target Tanker attacks are set to have a radius - Gauntlet's. Then, for the different aspects of the attack that are single target (damage, secondary effect, etc) they are manually set to have a radius of 0. So, AttackX would have a radius of 10, but the damage and knockdown would have a radius of 0.

If this is the case, it means two things:

1) Gauntlet will go off whether or not the single target effect hits. Just like any other AoE, if you miss the primary target, the AoE will still hit other targets. Fireball, for example, doesn't fail to hit additional targets if the primary wasn't successful, afterall.

2) Unless there is some other mechanic at work that I'm not aware of, the AoE taunt itself has a tohit check. Think about it, I can't think of a single power that has a tohit check for a primary target, but autohit AoE. Tanker attacks are just AoEs, afterall.

Again, this is just speculation, something I haven't manually tested myself. Maybe I'll remember to do this today after work.

Alright seeing as people are being specific his my summation:

Single target attacks have to land to serve gauntlet on other targets plus the target your hitting. The greater the base end cost the likelier the greater the AoE. Hit 5 max.

AoEs tend to aim to hit every target within max amount but you can miss everything, which can be done. Blazing Aura, Death Shroud and the likes rely on an accuracy check to hit and I've seen reasons to require build up or -def powers like stalagmites to make missing less likely. They've without fail tend to aggro around their natural radius.

Gauntlet duration can be extended by taunt slots, the threat level is also greatened by damage slots if you bare in mind that the higher the level of enemy the more resisted your taunt effects should be then you won't be always expecting enemies to stay on you the exact base durations you've read. Also some enemies have resistance. Mako placates if your within 50ft, better to have some aggro duration that surpasses that..

Never in my life would I be without the power taunt as gauntlet alone isn't acceptable to me, taunt auras aren't always autohit plus I like a bit of flexibility, if I personally don't want to be hit by Soulstorm I'd rather taunt without allowing it to happen. No need for that mezz buffer, def buffer etc, etc. The power Taunt is autohit except in PvP.
