Could This Handle Ultra Mode?
So, I've been laptop shopping and came across a nice little laptop which seems (to me) a good choice, but I've been wondering: can it run Ultra Mode?
If not, can you refer me to a better one? |
If you were searching for an Ultra-Mode compatible computer, start looking for laptops with the Nvidia GTX 260M, or wait for the game to launch, and you should be able to find a laptop with one of these GPU's: http://www.amd.com/us/products/noteb...y-hd-5800.aspx

Edit: Whoops. I typed out the wrong card model. The GT240 mobile is closer to a desktop 9400 GT
Probably not. the mobile Geforce GT240 is basically a rebadged, die shrunk, downclocked version of the 9600 GT...

(that and I don't know how badly the Ireland markets jack up relative prices for new hardware.)
I'm guessing going to be the same as what laptops with the GTX 260's are running at right now. As far as I can research, the GTX 260 is the most powerful mobile chipset currently being sold.

Personally, I'd never consider a laptop for gaming. They're just not really designed for that sort of thing, and they ALL lack in some region or another.
Get yourself a good desktop instead if you want to game seriously.

Sometimes desktop is not an option, and not for a lack of money, but in my case my desktop is in the far left room of the house, exactly the oposite side of the house to where the living room is, so I had to choose playing completely alone or with my family... there was no real choice to do, after all
Admittedly, when I've played again in my desktop the quality is far better than my laptop, specially because when I tried to use in the laptop a higher mode than Minimum everything lags and frozes, while it works great either Performance or Recommended in the desktop one. But as I said, I had no choice.

Funny I play on my desktop because it is a long way from the family (and the dreaded TV)

Desktop it is then. Just another question now; is there any point in just installing a new graphics card to my PC? It runs the game fine on minimum, but it's easily five years old at this stage.

if you don't mind running this utility, then copying the information over (There should be an export to html option), that will tell us more about what's in your computer and what could be done with it.
CoH is a memory hog (a lot of games are). The more memory you have, alongside the graphics card, the better, but at least 2GB which may be lacking in a 5 year old PC.

Can you try copy-pasting the contents instead?

So no help at all?
Looking at that, I would completely upgrade your base unit (the big box) ... is that an option for you?
Defiant 50's
Many and varied!
@Miss Chief
Depending on what your budget is RP, you would probably be better off buying a cheapish dual core system rather than trying to stretch to a really pricey i3/5/7 system.
I know the S775 stuff is getting phased out but because of that, i'm finding prices of those components are dropping in price so they don't get stuck with them.
It might be "old" stuff now, but you would see a huge increase in performance for like £400 that would easily last for 2 years or so.
Only problem is, i'm guessing you don't know how to self build and i don't know if system builders will use S775 stuff any more. I'll have a look.
