Bear with me (Ranged scrapper)

With the Blaze Mastery Ancillary pool and a fantastic power like focus, wouldn't it be pretty easy with good recharge to make a kiting scrapper? In fact, with a combination of the knockdown of focus and knockback of shockwave, and potentially also the hold of char, couldn't you basically lock down any hard target by juggling them repeatedly and building up holds. How would the immobilize of ring of fire effect this? How viable could this combo be?

Ring of Fire has a 15s -KB effect.

With a perma-Hasten build you can chain Focus->Shockwave->Fire Blast->Focus->Fire Ball->Fire Blast. Slotted well that will do 140+ ST DPS (and near 40 AoE DPS). So I'd say it could be viable, but is likely to be far from optimal.

There's a guy I know on Champion, global is @Cowboy Cutter. I think he has a ranged Scrapper build but I don't know the specifics.

I'll second what Kosmos said, "viable, but... far from optimal". Scrappers have the survivability to go face to face and put out a lot higher damage that way. Or if you want to stay at range and put out significantly higher damage with high survivability, make yourself a range soft-capped Blaster. But if it's a concept build of some sort, a ranged Scrapper should be perfectly playable, and I know I've read about people playing them and having a good time. It's just been a long time since I've seen mention of them.

The only problem really is that when you exemp... you'll lose the epic powers. So if you never exemp it could be fun

Just out of curiousity, how did you compute the dps of that chain? There are a couple reasons why I ask:

* Redraw - Whenever you need to redraw your claws (twice per chain) you'll need to add extra time to the chain. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone knows the activation time of the redraw effect, so we can't accurately account for it.

* The average damage of the dot is generally miscalculated. Most times, people average it out to TotalDotDamage * Chance. So, damage * 0.8 in this case. It's more complicated than that because each tick needs to roll a check to see if it continues.

Put those two together, and it means dealing less damage over a longer period of time.

I've had a ranged spines/regen for quite some time now: energy torrent, throw spines, LBE, and impale. Occasionally I'll move her in for a ripper. It's a fun build and the concept I used to build her was a "spines blaster".

There are more optimal spines/regen builds for sure. Builds that take advantage of quills and melee defense for example. However, I haven't had the heart to respec into those or start a second build. As she is now, she's wonderful as a teaming scrapper and I've never failed a TF with her. She solos pretty decently as well, though if I had to compare her with my fire/shield it's no contest.

I calculated the DoT as usual (I took the numbers from a spreadsheet actually): 4(1-0.8^n)*DS [I've posted that formula to the forums a couple of times - average DoT is just a geometric series with a common factor of 0.8]. I didn't account for redraw, activating Hasten, or using defensive clicks. Since the chain is so far from optimal I didn't bother with those finer points, I just did a basic estimate.

Ah! You already took the fire dot ticks into account. Sorry, didn't mean to point out something you already knew - I just know it's been a trouble area in the past.

I also understand your reason about the finer details.

Hehe, yeah, I have a ranged scrapper build for my claws/sr. Made totally as a joke though, he keeps whirlwind toggled and shoots lasers from his eyes and heals and rezes the team. If you wanna see the build (very unoptimized, I just made it as a joke so it's pretty cheap), here's the chunk:

I mostly use the build on PuGs or when I just have fun with my sg and whirlwind everywhere, still does decentish damage though.

Weird....this is exactly what'd I'd say. I love my dam/rng HO's in throw spines.
