I agree Dinah probably should have made that request via PM.

That being said:

Rather than a long back-and-forth about who's "correct"; why not just agree to disagree and move on since it's already been changed and the issue has resolved itself.

Besides, there is no *correct* answer; only opinions. And conversations of an opinionated nature that also involve somebody's feelings almost always devolve into unproductive states.

Dinah should no longer be offended. Angie never meant any offense in the first place. Ta-Da! Problem solved.

No last words needed other than "bacon".

Out of curiosity, where/when is/was "dink" in common usage as an ethnic slur? While i've seen and heard it used on rare occasion to mean dumb, or the more common "dinky", meaning small, i have never seen it used anywhere in a racist context.

Then again, terms like "gypped" and "Jerry-rigged" are derived from racist terms as well even though many probably don't know it.

Also misinterpreted.

When did they stop teaching about homonyms?

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

As I said above, it got a lot of use in the 80s. I mean, I heard it used as a racist slur on a fairly frequent basis.

Do you really feel that is applicable to the original post or helpful here?

Here's an idea:

Why not discuss another subject that has no correct answer; like which color is the best?

That seems far less likely to offend somebody and is equally as useless to try and "win".

Bacon is offensive to law enforcement officials.

Just wanted to point out how quickly this whole thing could get silly.

I agree completely.

And since I was SF in the Air Force, I feel I have offended myself with my comments.

That's another fine mess I've gotten myself into...

For the record, I realize the OP isn't "that kind of person", thus the request to have the wording changed.
In short, because you're unduly sensitive to a particular turn of phrase, you were offended.

The problem, Dinah, resides with YOU, not with the OP.

Yup. The author has no control over what you believe they wrote.

Of course, some people read the bible and come away "thinking" the world's less than 6,000 years old too.

Simply because you can interpret something one way doesn't mean your interpretation is correct in context.

Feh. Public schooling below the collegiate level (at least in the US) hasn't been anything more than simply daycare/kiddie-jail for the last 25 years, minimum. At best it's craptastic vocational mis-training.

Command of the language? The teachers are too overburdened by simply reading, verbatim, from the class textbook.

Although all penguin species are native to the southern hemisphere, they are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguin actually live so far south. At least 10 species live in the temperate zone; one, the Galápagos Penguin, lives as far north as the Galápagos Islands, but this is only made possible by the cold, rich waters of the Antarctic Humboldt Current that flows around these islands.

Several authors have suggested that penguins are a good example of Bergmann's Rule where larger bodied populations live at higher latitudes than smaller bodied populations. There is some disagreement about this, and several other authors have noted that there are fossil penguin species that contradict this hypothesis and that ocean currents and upwellings are likely to have had a greater effect on species diversity than latitude alone.

Major populations of penguins are found in: Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here. Yes, what I said was relevant.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.

Off topic, the conversation is now about penguins.

I was asking if you felt your snide comment was truly needed or helpful.

And my only intention in replying on this thread at all was to try and keep it from deteriorating into (yet another) childish back-and-forth where nobody wins.

For the record: I think all words are neutral and the people who use them give them their meaning. (Which I am well aware is pretty much in line with what you've been saying.)

But it wasn't about whether I agreed or disagreed, because I still knew the thread would most likely turn ugly and I wanted to try my best to prevent that from happening. Nobody "wins" these types of discussions.

So instead of relaying my own opinion and continuing to address a situation that had already been resolved, I decided to take the high road.

----------

Since I have zero issue with you personally; I would prefer to just be done with this conversation, now.

But I'll tell you this: If you snip at me one more time in a public channel when I have done nothing at all to you, expect to be removed.

Sorry, Horus.

What I meant to say was that most penguins can swim about 15 miles per hour.

And again I have no idea what you're going on about.

I will send you a tell if you're interested in the comments I am referring to.

But this isn't the place for that; and I have no interest in going back and forth with you any longer.

That would be doing the thing I wanted to avoid.

So let's just focus on Penguins...

I do tend to become interested when I'm being threatened.
